your body gives, but then holds back... the sun is bright, the sky is black... [ ... ] your laughter, it lingers on... but you, you were almost gone...

          when  ruby  envisioned  her  life  with  aasim,  what  it  had  turned  into  had  not  been  what  she’d  expected  or  necessarily  wanted.  yes,  she’d  wanted  a  family  with  him—having  as  many  kids  as  they  had  wasn’t  the  problem—and  no,  she  didn’t  mind  that  he  had  to  take  time  for  his  work,  but  she  was  busy  too  and  still  had  to  take  care  of  everything  else.

          she’d  tried  to  be  patient  with  him,  tried  to  be  understanding—but  a  woman  could  only  take  so  much.  the  stress  of  her  job,  of  raising  their  kids,  and  fearing  over  whether  or  not  her  marriage  of  nearly  two  decades  was  finally  crumbling  weighed  on  her  too  heavily.  she  wasn’t  sure  how  much  more  she  could  take.

          when  aasim  had  dismissed  her  that  night  when  she  tried  to  get  him  to  come  to  bed,  the  tone  he’d  used  at  that,  she  found  herself  sighing  and  shaking  her  head;  begrudgingly  resigned  to  the  apparent  fate  they  had  waiting  for  them.

          “ can  only  be  another  sign, ”  she  muttered,  more  to  herself  than  to  aasim,  though  it  was  said  loud  enough  that  he  could  hear  if  he  was  paying  attention.  “ i  cannot  keep  what  isn’t  mine… ”

uh, when i'm with you i have amnesia, got me without a mind... my stupid brain thinks that i need you, misleads me all the time... [ ... ] 'cause i forget the crazy shit, the littlest things impress me... mediocre in the bed, my bestie would never let me... uh, i did it again...

          college  was  somehow  both  what  n.ancy  w.heeler  did  and  did  not  expect.  she  expected  a  heavy  course  load  and  to  not  have  much  free  time—and  sometimes  it  truly  was  like  that,  but  she  hadn’t  expected  to  befriend  some  of  the  people  in  her  classes,  much  less  expected  to  be  invited  out  for  drinks  to  celebrate  the  end  of  semester  exams.  normally,  nancy  wouldn’t  have  agreed—not  much  of  a  partier  in  general—but  with  how  much  of  an  absolute  STRESS  BALL  she’d  been  over  the  whole  ordeal,  she  agreed.

          and,  without  giving  it  much  thought,  she  got  carried  away—far  too  carried  away  to  be  sober  enough  to  make  it  home  on  her  own.  if  she  were  sober,  she’d  kick  herself  for  letting  herself  go  this  far.  though,  she’ll  be  paying  the  price  of  her  actions  by  tomorrow,  if  not  tonight,  depending  on  the  reaction  she  got  from  steve.  if  she  were  any  more  sober  than  she  currently  was,  she’d  feel  guilty.  because,  truly,  he  didn’t  deserve  this.

          “ steve, ”  she  crooned  into  the  payphone  outside  of  the  bar  she  and  her  classmates  had  gone  to.  “ steveeeee…  i,  um…  need  you… ”  her  words  were  slightly  slurred,  despite  any  attempts  to  sound  normal.  

          a  giggle  escaped  her  lips  before  she  could  stop  it,  followed  by,  “ it's  like  i  need  a  babysitter—someone  to  come  and  get  me…  you…have  experience  in  that,  don’t  you…?  can  you  come  pick  me  up ?  pleaseeee…? ”

          surely,  when  she’s  sober,  she’ll  feel  terrible  about  all  of  this.
