your body gives, but then holds back... the sun is bright, the sky is black... [ ... ] your laughter, it lingers on... but you, you were almost gone...

          when  ruby  envisioned  her  life  with  aasim,  what  it  had  turned  into  had  not  been  what  she’d  expected  or  necessarily  wanted.  yes,  she’d  wanted  a  family  with  him—having  as  many  kids  as  they  had  wasn’t  the  problem—and  no,  she  didn’t  mind  that  he  had  to  take  time  for  his  work,  but  she  was  busy  too  and  still  had  to  take  care  of  everything  else.

          she’d  tried  to  be  patient  with  him,  tried  to  be  understanding—but  a  woman  could  only  take  so  much.  the  stress  of  her  job,  of  raising  their  kids,  and  fearing  over  whether  or  not  her  marriage  of  nearly  two  decades  was  finally  crumbling  weighed  on  her  too  heavily.  she  wasn’t  sure  how  much  more  she  could  take.

          when  aasim  had  dismissed  her  that  night  when  she  tried  to  get  him  to  come  to  bed,  the  tone  he’d  used  at  that,  she  found  herself  sighing  and  shaking  her  head;  begrudgingly  resigned  to  the  apparent  fate  they  had  waiting  for  them.

          “ can  only  be  another  sign, ”  she  muttered,  more  to  herself  than  to  aasim,  though  it  was  said  loud  enough  that  he  could  hear  if  he  was  paying  attention.  “ i  cannot  keep  what  isn’t  mine… ”
