36: A kiss to the shoulder

          another  case  solved,  another  job  well-done…is  typically  charles’  motto.  this  case  had  been  harder—more  emotionally  taxing—than  some  of  the  others.  a  kid  who  died  via  hate  crime  had  come  to  them  for  help  in  finishing  their  business  on  earth  and  crossing  over.  it  was  something  they  could  both  relate  to,  but  said  hate  crime  had  been  blatant  homophobia.

          a  kid  murdered  by  his  bullies  after  being  outed.  it  had  been  a  rough  one  to  deal  with  and  they’d  felt  so  bad  that  they  decided  to  take  it  on  pro-bono.  his  death,  at  the  very  least,  hadn’t  been  covered  up  or  forgotten  about,  but  it  still  hit  close  to  home.

          when  it  was  all  said  and  done,  either  of  the  two  felt  in  particularly  high  spirits  to  celebrate—even  if  it  had  been  a  happier  ending  for  the  kid.  charles  had  noticed  how  it  had  affected  edwin,  in  particular,  and  sat  next  to  him  on  their  old  couch.

          wordlessly,  he  leaned  his  head  against  edwin’s  shoulder,  tilting  his  head  after  a  moment  to  press  a  soft  kiss  to  his  shoulder.  he  remained  silent  for  a  few  moments  longer  before  quietly  asking,  “ do  you  wanna  talk  about  it ? ”

          “ nope ! ”  his  tone  is  much  too  chipper  for  someone  who  had  the  lookout  night  shift.  “ just  switched  out  with  rubes  so  my  schedule  is  lookin’  pretty  clear  right  about  now… ”  he’d  be  lying  if  he  said  that  he  didn’t  get  a  kick  out  of  getting  under  violet’s  skin.  she  made  it  too  easy,  honestly.  “ besides,  i  can  tell  by  how  enthusiastic  you  are  to  see  me  that  you  won’t  mind  me  hangin’  out  with  you  for  a  bit. ”

6: A gentle peck

          the  mornings  in  the  harrington  household  can  be  more  than  a  little  hectic…  with  classes,  nancy  dealing  with  the  morning  sickness  from  the  tail  end  of  her  first  trimester,  and  steve  going  for  his  first  day  of  firefighter  training,  today  happened  to  be  especially  chaotic.  nancy  had  to  practically  force  steve  to  go  for  the  job  in  the  first  place,  promising  that  she  would  be  okay  and  if  she  needed  help,  for  any  reason  at  all,  she’d  call  him.

          still,  steve  had  barely  acquiesced,  but  he’d  done  so  nevertheless.  regardless,  he’d  still  insisted  upon  continuing  to  drive  nancy  to  her  classes  that  morning—refusing  to  acknowledge  that,  with  this  new  job,  there  would  be  mornings  where  he  couldn’t  and  nancy  would  have  to  drive  herself—and  they  sat  there  for  a  moment,  in  steve’s  car,  when  they’d  arrived.

          “ i’ll  be  fine,  steve,  i  promise, ”  nancy  tried  to  assure  him with  a  small  smile.  “ and  we’ll  still  get  to  spend  time  together.  we  won’t  be  apart  all  the  time… ”  as  much  of  an  adjustment  that  it  would  be…

“ i  gotta  go  before  i’m  late,  but  i’ll  see  you  at  home,  okay ? ”  she  leaned  in  and  pressed  a  gentle  kiss  to  his  lips  before  exiting  the  car.
