          not  much  phases  louis—or  he  likes  to  pretend  it  doesn’t.  either  way,  he  doesn’t  let  the  others  see.  he’ll  let  their  stinging  remarks  or  off-handed  comments  roll  off  his  back,  smile,  laugh,  and  go  about  his  day,  care-free.  sometimes  louis  can  tell  that  they  aren’t  being  serious;  he  doesn’t  take  every  comment  to  heart,  but  sometimes  things  hit  a  little  too  close  to  home.  still,  he’ll  go  about  his  day—it’s  nothing  new.

          what  louis  hadn’t  accounted  for  was  how  his  HOTHEADED  boyfriend  would  react.  he  was  still  getting  used  to  it.  it  wasn’t  like  mitch  said  much  before  they  got  together—in  fact,  louis  thought  mitch  hated  him  with  every  fiber  of  his  being  at  times,  or  at  the  very  least  found  him  annoying.  so,  he’d  been  extremely  surprised  when  mitch  made  a  move  on  him—not  that  he  disliked  it  or  anything.

          but  it  surprised  him  even  more  just  how  mitch  acted  when  they  were  together.  softer,  sweeter,  but  still  with  his  usual  chaotic  streak…and  a  temper  when  set  off.  he  hadn’t  gone  off  on  louis  about  something  ( yet )  but  louis  could  watch  the  gears  turning  in  his  head  and  the  way  he  had  to  bite  his  tongue  whenever  someone  scoffed  about  something  louis  said.  louis  found  it  more  impressive  than  it  probably  was,  and…sweet.

          “ mitch,  seriously—it’s  fine, ”  louis  insisted  once  they  were  alone.  “ for  real.  don’t  have  an  aneurysm,  okay ? ”

          ruby  loved  the  greenhouse.  it  was  peaceful;  she  was  in  her  element,  and  she  genuinely  enjoyed  caring  for  her  plants  and  helping  them  thrive.  still,  it  was  always  best  to  go  with  someone  rather  than  alone  since,  with  today’s  world,  one  never  really  knew  what  to  expect.  typically,  she  went  with  brody  or  violet  which  was  nice  because  brody  was  one  of  her  closest  friends  and  violet  was  nice  and  quiet  and  didn’t  give  her  any  shit.  today,  however,  she’d  gotten  paired  with  louis,  and  she  loved  louis,  she  really  did;  he  was  a  good  friend  to  her.  …  but  the  boy  could  talk.  

          she  was  torn  away  from  her  thoughts  as  louis  tried  to  engage  her  in  conversation.  it  took  her  a  moment  to  register  the  conversation  he  was  trying  to  broach,  and  her  cheeks  tinged  red—a  rosier  hue  than  usual.  quickly,  her  gaze  averted  his,  and  she  intently  focused  on  the  herb  before  her.

          “ listen—  i  ain’t  too  keen  on  talkin’  about  my…’love  life’  with  you  right  now,  louis, ”  she  explained  a  little  hotly,  embarrassed.  “ you  don’t  see  me  askin’  about  yours,  do  ya ? ”

          nancy  had  noticed  him  acting  weird—of  course  she  did;  she  always  did.  and  mike  hadn’t  wanted  to  talk  at  first,  just  sat  in  silence  with  her  while  the  thoughts  swirled  around  his  head. she seemed to be waiting on him to say something.

          he  doubted  that  she’d  actually  wait  on  him  for  too  long.  eventually,  after  enough  poking  and  prodding,  she’d  take  the  hint  and  leave.  but  here  she  was,  still  sitting  on  the  couch  beside  him  in  the  basement,  and  after  five  minutes  passed  of  pure  silence  between  them,  mike  got  the  impression  that  she really didn't plan on going anywhere.  it  made  him  a  little  antsy.

          “ el  broke  up  with  me, ”  he  said,  finally,  voice  so  low  it  was  nearly  a  whisper.  he’d  never  voiced  it  out  loud,  but  now  that  he  had,  it  almost  felt  like  a  RELIEF;  a  weight  being  lifted  off  of  his  shoulders.  “ and—  i-i  dunno,  it’s  just…  i  thought  it  would  feel…worse  somehow,  y’know ?  but…  i  just—  i  almost  feel…  relieved  that  she  finally  did  it.  does  that  make  sense ?  or  is  it,  like,  i  dunno—weird  or  something…? ”  it  sure  felt  kind  of  weird.

          they’ve  both  been  through  more  than  either  of  them  really  deserved,  with  the  scars  to  prove  it.  kate  wouldn’t  mind  her  own  if  it  didn’t  constantly  remind  her  of  the  death  of  mariana  and  her  inability  to  do  anything  other  than  nearly  get  herself  killed.  and  that  thought  led  to  other  thoughts—running  back  into  david,  being  scared  for  her  life,  having  to  save  richmond  from  impending  doom—but  they’d  made  a  home  here  and  the  scars  were  just  something  she  had  to  live  with.

          it  wasn’t  all  bad,  anyway,  she  supposed.  things  could’ve  been  a  lot  worse  than  they  were,  and  she  knew  that  she  should  be  grateful  for  what  she  did  have—her  stepson  and  javi  and  a  place  where  they  could  sleep  without  the  fear  of  being  snuck  up  on  by  muertos.

          “ you  know  my  eyes  are  up  here,  right ? ”  kate  said  as  she  pulled  her  shirt  down  over  her  torso.  she  knew  where  javi  had  really  been  looking—the  annoying  scar  on  her  abdomen—but  she  couldn’t  resist  teasing  him.  the  faint  smile  that  had  pulled  at  her  lips  started  to  fall  away  as  she  added,  “ the  more  you  stare  at  it  isn’t  gonna  make  it  go  away…  trust  me,  i’ve  tried. ”
