All-star [sapnap]
all-star [sapnap]
pairing: sapnap x gn!reader
pronouns: they/them
synopsis: reader's dad is the coach of the basketball team, and their boyfriend is the star player. only 'coach' doesn't know they're dating. (yes, another sapnap high school! au from yours truly)
wc: 2.7k
a/n: sapnap said his favourite sport to play and watch was basketball and this is what my mind did with that information. also thank you for 800 followers!
tw: swearing?, school mention, bit of flirting
you’d dealt with it since you were young. both your parents having been teachers, your mother being an elementary teacher and your father being a high school teacher, you’d always felt the favouritism and familiarity that come with being the child of a teacher.
as you got older, the more accustomed you got to it all. especially in high school, since your father also happened to be the coach of the boys’ basketball team, and though “football” is usually the go-to sport of a typical american high school, your school excelled at basketball. which, by default, meant he was very well-known and well-respected by the student body.
much to your distaste, this meant a lot of potential boyfriends were scared off by your dad’s menacing glares and empty threats - a coach can be very, very scary when he wants to be - especially if said boy happened to be on his team. by your sheer luck, your crush happened to be his star player.
luckily, having your dad as the coach proved to be quite useful in the boys’ aspect. you’d stopped by countless practices, making up an excuse about not wanting to take the bus on that particular evening, and watching the rest of practice without question. you couldn’t do it too often to avoid suspicions, but your father taught you well and you probably understood the game better than half the actual players, anyways. it wasn’t hard to pretend to be interested.
game nights were even better excuses, because not only were you there alone, but most nights the entire school showed up, and with the perk of arriving early with the coach, you always got the best seats, where you could shamelessly and inconspicuously watch him, number 01 on the court. like every high school jock ever, he went by a nickname. sapnap.
he was so much more than a simple jock, in your eyes. he was one of the kindest boys in your grade, always offering smiles everywhere he went, and though he was aware of his advanced skill in the sport, he was always humble.
maybe that’s why you fell for him. or maybe it was the lingering glances the two of you would share in each of the classes you had together. or maybe, just maybe, it was the idea you couldn’t be with him, the idea that your dad would make his life miserable.
that was, if he ever found out.
it wasn’t an easy feat, the two of you hiding from your father. from time to time, you swore he knew about your secret, subtle conversations seemingly hinting at something more - but he was old, and naive. there was no way he wouldn’t have said something by now.
you walked into the lunch room, glancing around and looking for a certain head of brown hair. once you spotted him in his signature letterman jacket, you slipped into the seat next to him, smiling as you nudged him purposely. he smiled down at you, and did a quick glance of the cafeteria, before leaning down and placing a small kiss on your lips. you smiled brightly, heat creeping up your cheeks. you’d never get over the way he made you feel.
“coming to practice tonight?” he asked, and you rolled your eyes playfully, letting out an exaggerated huff.
“do i have to?” you pouted, and he laughed, wrapping an arm around you as he did so. you weren’t too fond of the confidence radiating off of him, so you decided to fire back slightly. “don’t get me wrong, you’re really hot when you play. like, really hot.” you started, watching out of the corner of your eye as his eyes flew open and he gaped at you, jaw dropped. “but you guys have the big game tonight, so i’ll be watching you play later anyways!”
sapnap swallowed, before taking a second to recompose himself. “the game is why you should come tonight! c’mon, y/n. maybe you can even give us some pointers, since you’re so interested in the sport.” he teased, and you rolled your eyes, shaking your head.
“i swear, tommy doesn’t know what a layup is! how does he mess it up every time? it’s just a few steps and a shot!” you complained, and sapnap laughed, basking in the moment. you’d never admit it to anyone, but you liked that you knew enough about the sport to hold a conversation with your boyfriend. though you weren’t interested in the sport itself, it was nice to be able to talk with sapnap about something he cared so dearly for.
he leaned down then, placing his mouth next to your ear, smirking at the hitch in your breath at his proximity. “just come tonight. for me.” sapnap whispered, and you sighed, nodding. he smiled brightly, tugging you towards him, and wrapping you in a tight hug.
and thus you found yourself doing homework on the empty bleachers once more, stealing glances at the court every so often. you watched as the team played a quick 5v5, the ball being stolen, passed and shot, you adding in your two cents every few plays. before you could even process it, the practice had ended.
“alright boys, bring it in!” your dad called, and the group quickly filed in, forming a small circle around him. “i need you all here for 6:30, no later or you’re benched. game starts at 7:00 sharp. tonight is important, people. if we win this game, we’re moving onto the championships.” his firm tone echoed in the large gym, and the boys let out a series of whoops and cheers. “now get out, i’ll see you guys this evening!” he dismissed, and the boys cheered once more, parading out of the gym as a unit.
a certain brunette glanced up at you as he passed, flashing you his signature ‘i-just-killed-that-shit’ smirk, and you softly smiled back, only for a moment, before turning your attention back to gathering your things, as to not keep your father too long. the two of you headed home, chatting about the excitement for the night ahead.
“i really think you guys have a chance at beating the other team. especially if the guys play like they did at that practice!” you babbled, your dad nodding in agreement. he seemed to be thinking deeply, and you paused, turning to face him. “dad? is something wrong?” you asked, nervously.
“no, no. nothing’s wrong. just thinking about something.” he assured you, and you sighed, motioning for him to continue. “well, kid. you’ve practically been training these guys as much as i have - i don’t think i could’ve managed this team as well as i have without you. what do you say, why don't you sit on the bench with me as assistant coach?” he prompted, and you blinked in surprise.
“i’d love to!” you exclaimed, jumping forward and tackling him in a tight embrace. he smiled, returning it, before pulling back and gathering his things from the bench.
“i forgot my keys in my classroom, you can just wait here while i run upstairs. sound good?” he asked, and you smiled, nodding. he left, and you sighed happily, basking in the recognition you didn’t feel you deserved, but certainly appreciated.
“assistant coach, huh?” a familiar voice asked, and you turned instantly, smiling even brighter at his slightly disheveled appearance, his hair wet from a quick shower. he stepped towards you, quickly pulling you by your hips when you were within reach, tugging you so that the two of you stood face to face, lips only inches apart from one another. you giggled dreamily, slowly leaning forward and pressing your soft lips to his slightly chapped ones.
he pulled away slightly, and you paused, confused. “assistant coach sounds pretty hot.” he mumbled, and you pulled away, dramatically slapping his chest. “ow!” he mocked, and you rolled your eyes, grabbing him by his sweatshirt and pulling him back to you, leaving a searing kiss on his lips. he squeaked in surprise, hands flying back to your waist, before you pulled away completely with an evil smirk.
“good luck, lover boy.” you teased, and your timing seemed perfect as ever, hearing your dad call for you only seconds later. “coming dad!” you picked up your things, sapnap still frozen in place, cheeks flushed. “see you tonight.” you whispered as you passed, scurrying off before he could get in another word.
the next few hours leading up to the game could not have been any longer. you tried to do homework, reading, drawing - anything to help pass the time. all attempts ended futile though, and you settled for texting sapnap mindlessly, the two of you radiating excitement. after what felt like a lifetime, your dad called for you to gather what you needed and to head to the car, and you didn’t need to be told twice.
once you arrived, you began making your way to the bleachers, before pausing and turning towards the bench, following your dad, who looked at you proudly as you sauntered over, taking a seat next to him. the team walked into the gym, uniforms on and stretching as they advanced. “get warmed up guys!” your dad announced, and they instantly obliged. as they practiced, students filed into the bleachers, bearing banners and school colours - from both schools.
a whistle blew, and the teams retracted to their benches, your dad pulling out his clipboard. “okay, sap - you’re going to start here..” he explained each player’s positions and the tactics they planned on using, and with a small cheer, your boyfriend led his teammates onto the court, standing face to face as he prepared to jump for the ball. the ball was tossed, and the game commenced.
the scores were neck and neck, with the score 52-53 for you, with two minutes remaining. “just one more, guys.” you muttered under your breath, anxiously watching the group of boys fighting over the ball, intercepting passing and maneuvering around each other. you glanced at the clock as the time passed quickly, down to the last minute thirty. “get the ball to sapnap!” your dad called, and the team scrambled to grab ahold of the ball. sam quickly stole it mid-pass, quickly spotting sapnap, who waved his arms frantically. sam threw the ball, and sapnap caught it easily, but was quickly swarmed by the other team. he held the ball tightly, glancing for an opening. he saw two options: he could push through the guy in front of him and run down the court, but he also spotted tommy at the other end of the court, right by the opponent's net, completely unblocked.
in the last few minutes, dream was injured and tommy was subbed in, though he wasn’t usually someone’s go to - hence why he had no defence whatsoever. they didn’t see him as a threat. with only seconds to spare, sapnap made his split-second decision and called out “tommy!”, before tossing the ball confidently, and tommy froze for a moment as the ball landed in his arms.
“tommy! do a layup!” you yelled in a panic, and he quickly sprung to life, dribbling once before taking two small steps and leaping, shooting the ball against the headboard. everyone held their breaths as the ball bounced around the rim, before settling and tipping into the net, just as the final buzzer went off. the bleachers erupted into cheers, and you joined in, the team all rushing onto the court to pick up tommy onto their shoulders in celebration.
you momentarily forgot about your dad, and beaming with excitement, you ran towards sapnap. you threw your arms around him instantly, mumbling congratulations. he laughed, wrapping his arms around your lower waist and picking you up, spinning you around. when he gently placed you on the ground, you reached up, kissing him softly. he returned the motion, and as you both pulled back, there was a twinkle of pure fondness in his eyes.
“ahem.” a deep voice called, and you tensed, slipping out of your boyfriend's embrace and looking guiltily at your dad, expecting a face of pure anger. instead, your jaw almost dropped as you saw a proud smile across your dad’s face.
“dad?” you questioned, your voice laced with pure confusion. your dad laughed out loud at this, and you frowned. you waited for a moment for his laughter to die down, wondering why he wasn’t trying to rip your boyfriend's head off. “are you okay?” you asked, hesitantly.
“okay? of course i’m okay.” he scoffed, waving off your discomfort. “i’m just surprised you lasted as long as you did!”
you and sapnap glanced at each other, silently asking if either of you understood what was going on. you didn’t. “uh, i’m not sure what you mean, coach.” sapnap chriped, and your dad gave him a ‘seriously?’ look.
“c’mon you two, you don’t seriously think i didn’t know you’ve been seeing each other this whole time.” he asked, and the two of you gaped, awestruck.
“you knew and you didn’t say anything?” you asked, shellshocked. your mind was running a mile a minute, unable to process what your dad was really saying.
your dad shrugged, “i thought you’d tell me when you were ready.” when you and sapnap stayed quiet, he sighed. “y/n, you know sapnap is my favourite student i’ve had. if you’re going to have a boyfriend at your age, which i still don’t think is really appropriate-”
“dad!” you defended, and he chuckled.
“sorry, sorry. anyways, if you’re going to be dating someone, i'm glad it’s him. you’re a good kid, sap. just don’t be an idiot and break their heart, or else. got it?” his tone was slightly joking, but the underlying threat was clear. sapnap smiled, nodding.
“i would never, coach.” his words were confident, smooth. it was a promise to both you and your dad, and you smiled, reaching for his hand and giving a small squeeze. “say, coach.” sapnap paused, and your dad nodded, motioning for him to continue. “would you mind if i took y/n out to celebrate? i’ll drive them back home by 11.”
your dad smiled fondly, nodding. “i suppose that could be arranged. i would suggest, however, you shower first though, sap.” he teased, and sapnap sputtered, taken off guard. your dad laughed, turning and walking away from the pair of you. “see, good kid.” he mumbled, mostly to himself.
once sapnap had gathered his things, the two of you had driven to a park not far from the school, some fast food you’d stopped to get on the way in hand. you simply sat in his seats, soaking in silence as you ate. a thought curiously prodded at your mind, and you decided to indulge it.
“can i ask you something, sap?” you questioned, and he nodded, glancing your way. “why didn’t you make a break for it? i know you saw the opening i did. instead, you gave up your shining moment and gave the ball to tommy, you let him have it.” your words weren’t judgemental, simply curious and slightly surprised. sapnap chuckled, leaning back in his seat.
“i don’t need the glory all of the time. i get the team relies on me a lot, but they don’t need to. they're just too scared to make the risky moves on their own.” he paused, thinking. “besides, tommy was unguarded, and he works well under pressure. i had no doubt he’d make the shot.” he shrugged, and you smiled fondly at him, leaning over the console and pressing a small kiss to his cheek.
“you’re perfect, you know that?” you mumbled, and he smiled, reaching over and cupping your cheek lovingly. you stared in silence for a moment, simply soaking in each other's presence.
his lips tugged up into a smile, before he began to whisper. “you know, the real reason i don’t need the glory is because i have the best prize already, sitting right in front of me.” you couldn’t fight the smile making its way onto your face.
“you’ll always be a winner in my heart.” you whispered, and he beamed, pressing his lips to yours once more.
“as long as i have you, i’ll always feel like a winner.” he mumbled against your lips, and as the two of you continued to kiss over the console of his car, you couldn’t help but feel like a winner yourself.

flights [quackity]
pairing: quackity x gn!reader
pronouns: they/them
synopsis: surprising your boyfriend ft sneaky karl
wc: 1.2k
a/n: inspired by quackity's stream & the wattpad writers who are putting all of us tumblr writers out of business.
tw: mentions of flying idk? a few swears as usual
you glanced nervously at the estimated arrival screen in front of you for the hundredth time, hoping endlessly that it would miraculously fast forward to you being in the arms of the love of your life. you just couldn’t wait.
when karl first mentioned he was flying quackity out to north carolina to film content again, you made a joke about crashing their reunion and surprising your boyfriend. it was a thoughtless idea, one that was meant to pass with the moment. karl, being the most spontaneous man you’d ever met, loved the idea. rather than letting it go, he booked you a flight himself right then and there. and so, here you were.
perhaps he was so willing because he was the one to unofficially set up you and quackity that he was so adamant on being there for your first time meeting. from the day you two had told him you were officially dating, he’d been trying to get you to meet. you should’ve known it would’ve gone like this, if you were being honest to yourself.
there was only one problem. you and karl were alex’s best friends, and go-to for daily calls. it was unbelievably hard to make plans behind his back. one wrong word, and he’d be onto you and all up in your business. as much as he’d deny it, your boyfriend was extremely curious, and that usually led to him being quite nosy.
finally though, the time had come, and you could stop being so tentative around him. instead, you would actually be able to see him, kiss him, to be in his arms. it was a real life fantasy.
you glanced out the window, watching the night sky with a dreamy look in your eyes, dancing over the bright city lights that illuminated the ground. there was something calming about the notion, and you sighed, leaning back in your seat.
you closed your eyes, putting on a soft playlist and losing yourself in your thoughts. you recounted some of your favourite memories with karl and quackity, whether it be the time they first brought you in for jackbox and you killed everyone in mad verse city, or the time the three of you stayed up on call by yourselves and had a competition to see who could stay awake the longest. (spoiler alert, it was karl)
you couldn’t help but smile fondly as countless other memories flooded your mind, and as you peeked an eye open and watched the plane slowly drift over the sheer clouds, you couldn’t help but remind yourself to make the most of this trip, and to make note of all your favourite moments. you imagined there would be plenty, but you would do your best to remember them all.
at some point during your peaceful state, you managed to drift off into a light slumber. suddenly the dreaded flight wasn’t so long, and before you knew it, you were awoken by a voice announcing to passengers it was time to return to seats and prepare for descent. you beamed, the remaining exhaustion from your sleep quickly disappearing and you were sure you could’ve exploded of happiness at any given moment.
you shot karl a quick text as you made your way to baggage claim, and he responded with a quick okay, letting you know he and quackity were on their way. you bounced on the balls of your feet, craning your neck to attempt to see over the massive crowds.
your phone buzzed again, a text from karl illuminating your screen. ‘here’. it was a simple, one word message but it sent your heart racing a mile a minute. you looked around once more, faintly spotted a mess of curls peeking out from the crowd. you weaved through the dozens of passersby, trying to get a better look if it was karl.
you brighten immediately upon realizing it was in fact your dear friend, shooting him a quick “i see you, don’t move.” you maneuvered out of the crowd so you were directly in their line of view, karl smirking once he saw you. quackity had yet to notice, too busy complaining by the looks of it.
you quickly typed out another text, this time to your boyfriend.
‘hey, u look so cute right now’.
‘what the hell, i always look cute. what makes you say that, though?’
‘i don’t know, i just think it’s cute your beanie matches your hoodie!’
‘how did you know they matched? creep.’
‘look up from your phone for once in your life and maybe you’ll find out?’
he frowned, looking at karl before turning his head and gazing around, until his eyes ran over you and continued on. you watched as he froze, doing a double take. you smiled brightly, running the short distance between you and throwing your arms around him tightly. he tensed, but in a split second he softened completely and reciprocated the hug, his hold on you twice as tight as your own.
“surprise.” you whispered, gently rocking the two of you back and forth as quackity let the realization sink in.
“wait, what the fuck are you doing here?” he asked, and you feigned sad, deciding to toy with him.
“aren’t you happy to see me?” you frowned, and he instantly panicked and began stuttering apologies. you and karl both burst into a fit of giggles, you finally wiggling out of your boyfriend’s grasp and moving to hug your best friend. quackity pouted, huffing and crossing his arms, mumbling about his two favourite people being ‘traitors’.
the three of you collected your bags, casual conversation flowing between you. you thought it would be awkward at first, but you’ve known them for the longest time and they were the two people you felt most comfortable with, and you couldn’t believe you thought it would be any different than your late night calls.
arriving at karl’s place, it was far past midnight and the three of you decided to call it a night, opting to start off your adventures in the morning. you and alex made your way to the spare room, while karl waved you off and bid you goodnight.
“so, what are you doing here? really?” your boyfriend asked, softly. you laughed quietly, moving your suitcases to the side of the room.
“i came to see you, obviously.” you admitted, unable to fight the smile he elicited from you naturally. “and karl, of course.” you added, cringing as alex laughed and you knew karl would be hearing about this tomorrow. the two of you crawled into bed, the exhaustion from the flights hitting you both hard.
“i’m glad you came.” he whispered, slowly running the back of his hand down your cheek. “i love you.”
you leaned forward, kissing him gently before retracting, and muttering “i love you too” quiet enough that had he been any further, he wouldn’t have heard it. the hushed whispers you shared, however, somehow made the moment all that more intimate. you both relaxed, purely content.
silence followed as you laid your head against the pillow, gazing into his eyes. his position mirrored yours, the two of you simply taking in each other's presence. you felt more at peace here than you ever had. it was a comfort that not even the view from thousands of feet in the air could offer.
you knew then, that no matter the cost, you would fly to the ends of the earth to be with this boy. but really, you wouldn’t have it any other way.

puzzles [dreamwastaken]
pairing: dreamwastaken x gn!reader
pronouns: they/them (none mentioned)
synopsis: two puzzle pieces slot together to form the beautiful picture that is love, until they don't.
wc: 1.3k
a/n: i have no idea what this is or what i was trying to accomplish with this but my brain said dream angst brainrot and i haven't posted in a bit so here u go!
tw: one swear maybe? angst, that is all.
think of two connecting puzzle pieces.
originally, they slotted together perfectly. no force, nor wiggling was required to connect the two, as they were made to be placed together.
as time went on, and the pieces were connected time and time again, the edges began to wear down. they began to come undone at the ends, but still, the pieces fit together well enough to keep the puzzle whole.
eventually though, the bit that slotted the two together broke off, leaving two single pieces. there was no longer a connection between the two, and the picture they created would be forever unfinished.
over time, you’d learn to think of your relationship as this puzzle.
before you met him, you’d known there was something missing in your life. your matching piece. and then he walked right into your life, quite literally.
headphones blasting in your ears, you hummed along to the song as you swapped your books for your next class. you gently bounced your head to the beat, completely lost in your thoughts. which is likely why when you finally closed your locker and stepped in the direction of your classroom, you were hit with a sheer force that sent you and your books flying towards the ground.
an arm quickly shot out, wrapping around your waist and catching you in astounding reflex. you opened your eyes, which you’d shut in pure shock, and looked into the most beautiful green eyes and softest-looking dirty blonde hair you’d ever seen. “shit - are you okay?” he asked, and you almost choked at how soft his voice was.
“yeah. yeah, i’m okay.” you managed, and the two of you stood in that position for a brief moment, simply looking at each other, before you cleared your throat and he flushed, letting you go. “sorry, i wasn’t watching where i was going.” you apologized, and he shook his head.
“no, it was totally my fault. my name’s clay, but everyone calls me dream. what’s yours?” he flashed you a charming smile, and that’s all it took. you were totally his.
maybe it was cliche to say that it was fate that he’d crashed into you on that ordinary day in your freshman year. you’d wholeheartedly believed it though, because that boy changed your life. he was the piece you’d been missing all along.
“hey dream! hey y/n!” sapnap greeted, and you smiled, returning the gesture. dream’s arm was steadily wrapped around your waist as always, and you leaned into his side as the boys launched into some discussion about sports you really had no interest in tuning into.
from the day you’d been so abruptly crashed into, you and he were inseparable. you instantly became “the power couple” according to the whispers in the halls (whatever that meant), but you didn’t care for the gossip. you didn’t care what people thought of you as long as you had him. he made you feel special, like a better version of yourself.
as though he read your thoughts, he tightened his grip on your waist, glancing down at you with that boyish smile of his. and everything was perfect.
just when you felt complete, when the picture you’d formed with dream was ready to be framed and set in stone, senior year rolled around.
with the weight of pending college applications and ap classes, you were finding yourself constantly drowning in work. meanwhile, dream was focused on his sports, for the most part. he was relying on his exceeding football skills for scholarships and you both understood the gravity of each other's endeavors, and you promised that no matter how busy, you’d make time for each other.
it started with every weekend, both saturday and sunday, you both set aside time to spend with each other. a few weeks later, it became one day or the other. a few weeks after that, it became every other weekend.
before you knew it, you and dream hardly saw each other. lunch was probably the longest time you’d spend in the same room, and sometimes even then he had a team meeting, or you’d be studying in the library.
the edges of your pieces were wearing thin.
“what do you mean you’re leaving?” his voice broke, and you frowned, tears welling in your eyes at the sight of the brokenhearted boy in front of you. you sighed, reaching out and grabbing his hands in your own, gingerly placing soft kisses on his knuckles.
“i got into my top school, dream. you know how hard i’ve been working for this.” your soft voice came out much sadder than you’d hoped - you wanted to stay strong for him. you really did. he sighed, nodding halfheartedly. he opened his arms for you, and you walked in gratefully accepting his embrace.
“we’ll figure this out. we’ll make it work.” he mumbled, and you nodded against his chest. at that moment, you truly believed he was right, and that you would make it through this. you could only hope.
four months of facetime calls and lonely nights, your relationship was holding on by mere threads.
“i miss you.” you muttered, and he only nodded, his focus somewhere else, probably editing. you frowned, but said nothing. recently, he dropped out of his schooling to pursue youtube full-time, and he was doing surprisingly well for himself. you didn’t really understand it, but you were supportive of him and his career. it drew most of his time and attention, but who were you to say anything. he was pursuing his aspirations, and so were you.
you babbled on about a random assignment you were putting off, when dream spoke up, cutting you off completely. “what if i came to visit you?” you blinked, processing his words. “i have more than enough money, let me come see you.” you almost burst into happiness, the two of you quickly diving in to plan the details.
a week later, you stood in the airport. you saw the familiar head of dirty blonde hair towering over the crowd, and rushed over to him immediately. he opened his arms for you, you launched yourself into them, sinking into his familiar frame. something felt different, but you brushed it off.
however, during dream’s stay, he was constantly on vc with his friends, and barely paid you any mind. you would work all day in the same room, eat together, sleep in the same bed, but it felt so inexplicably strange. he was right next to you, yet it felt like he was further away than ever.
facetimes became less frequent after he returned home. his youtube took off even more, and you threw yourself back into your studies. your connecting piece had finally broken.
“what did you just say?” you were fighting back sobs, looking into the searing green eyes you once got lost in through the bright screen. you heard him perfectly clear, but you didn’t want to believe it.
“i can’t do this anymore.” he repeated, but his voice was barely above a whisper. you weren’t surprised, you both knew it was over long ago. dream glanced up from his phone, smiling at something, and your heart sank. you knew that look. it’s the way he used to look at you.
“there’s someone else.” you stated, and dream tensed, seemingly forgetting you were still on the line. he looked guiltily at your expression, and you sighed, forcing a small smile. “i’m happy for you. goodbye dream.”
you hung up then, allowing the reality to sink in and the tears to flow freely. it was over. four years down the drain like nothing. you’d worn yourselves so thin, until you couldn’t hold onto the past anymore.
you no longer fit together like the perfect pair you once were. the picture you’d painted together had faded.
dream had already found a new piece for his puzzle. a replacement. yet, you were a broken piece. and it was much harder to find a match for a broken piece.
perhaps your picture would be forever unfinished.
