Skip Google for Research

As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse.  It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms

As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable.  As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.

Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.

Google is so powerful that it “hides” other search systems from us. We just don’t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.

www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.

www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.

https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.

www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.

http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.

www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.

www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.

www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free

HEY DISCORD USERS!!

unfortunately, discord continues to be the Worst Messaging Company Of All Time with its updates, and this time, its one that is not only a privacy violation, not only enabled by default, but ROLLED OUT SILENTLY, MEANING YOU MUST KNOW IT EXISTS TO TURN IT OFF.

i am talking about "clips", an exciting new feature /s that allows people to record you in voice chat without your knowledge or consent! Wow!

fortunately, you can turn this off, but its kinda shitty how they didnt tell you this existed at all, yeah?

settings > clips> the button should be clicked to turn it off

a screenshot of the sidebar of discord's settings screen, reading "my account, profiles, privacy & safety, family center, authorized apps, devices, connections, clips, family requests"
a screenshot of the menu that appears when you click the 'clips' tab, describing it as a beta feature that allows other users to record your voice in voicechat. it is on by default, but turned off in this image.

(note that it should be ON by default, you will have to click the button to turn it off)

thanks, discord, for Telling Us This Violating Setting Exists In An Update And Making Sure It Is Off By Default. /s.

reblogs are appreciated to spread the word.

Chapter 44: Mixed Blessings

Gabriel wakes up on Thanksgiving feeling grateful and Claire feels conflicted.

I included the original tags as the first 2 for reference.

Regarding the apples (he's seen eating 3 in the show), he says: "Forbidden fruit, my favorite," last time he's shown eating one. Then there's the wall in his apartment that's covered in "Forgive me Father, I have sinned," written over and over in what looks like blood, possibly what's still wet on him from his kills when he gets home. But you missed the most obvious one.

Sylar crucifies his "unevolved" victims. Go back and look at the way the bodies are always high up a wall and pinned to it with objects impaling their limbs. He does this because they're innocent. They have to die for the "sins" of others because they're in the wrong place at the wrong time and he can't risk getting caught so there can never be witnesses. If he'd gotten René's ability he 100% would make those people forget his face and probably that they saw the murders at all to spare them. That's not just conjecture either.

When he calls Mohinder because he's confused and concerned about himself possibly being the bomb he tells him that it makes no sense saying: "Why would I do that? They're innocent. There's no gain."

Also, on the subject of that call, he makes it immediately after killing Isaac, who is still lying dead in the room at the time. When he kills him, he pins him to the ground telekinetically then crucifies him with paintbrushes to keep him from getting up.

Gabriel definitely has religious trauma or, at the bare minimum, a deep resentment for it. We know Virginia was religious because when she freaks out about his abilities she says he's not her son and that he's "damned" then proceeds to demand that he "give back her Gabriel," which suggests she believes he's possessed.

Also, Peter (who we know is religious because he's shown praying in a church and we hear his prayer), crucifies Sylar with a nail gun when he tries to force him to turn back into Nathan. I felt that was a nice karmic come around.

If you like religious symbolism and/or sacrilege, check out my smut fic of Sylar as a Catholic priest falling to temptation and sin.
