Jake turned the doorknob to his apartment slowly, making sure it didn't make any noise as it unlocked. He pushed the door slightly, wincing when a squeaky sound echoed throughout the silent apartment and waited for a few seconds to see if you had woken up.

Hearing no sounds, he entered stealthily and closed the door just as carefully as he had opened it and to his relief, no sound came this time. He let out a breath at successfully completing the dangerous task of sneaking in and turned around to go to the kitchen, only to be blinded as the lights turned on.

He shielded his eyes with his hands, squinting against the harsh light falling into his eyes. After a few seconds of seeing nothing but white light, his heart sank as he saw your figure sitting on the living room couch, one leg over the other and a blank look on your face.

"Nice try."

He bit his lip at the harsh tone of your voice and hung his head.

"You seem to be forgetting that I was the one who helped you find Hannah. These little tricks aren't enough to fool me," you said and Jake looked anywhere else but you, ashamed to look you in the eyes.

"I'm sorry, I—"

"You're sorry you got caught or you're sorry that you did it?" You stood up, walking right in front of him and he had no choice but to look at you now. He was startled to find the glossy sheen of tears in your eyes.

"Do you think this is something you can keep quiet about? I'm worried, Jake. You disappear off to god knows where without telling me anything. What if something happened to you and I didn't even know where you were? Have you thought about what I might go through then?"

Jake sighed as you turned away to wipe your tears and he gently grabbed your shoulders, leading you to sit on the couch and kneeling down in front of you.

"I get that. I really do, but I don't want you to get hurt. What I do, what I am, it's not safe for either of us. I just don't want anything bad to happen to you because you associated with someone like me. I can't lose you."

You sniffed a little and then slid down to sit beside him on the floor. Without looking at him, you spoke.

"I'm not asking you to take me wherever you go, love. I know what I signed up for when we got together. I'm just asking you to keep me in the loop so that if one day, you disappear, I will know where to look." Your voice cracked at the end and Jake put his arm around your shoulder, tugging you close to him and you obliged, burying your face in his shoulder.

Jake felt bad at making you worry so much about him when you already have so much on your shoulders because of your job and countless others things.

"You must hate me now." He lamented, smiling bitterly at the thought that he had brought nothing but trouble in your life.

"I don't hate you." You shifted to look at him, face heavy with guilt and pressed a small kiss at the corner of his jaw.

"I could never hate you, you know that."

"I know. And that's what makes it so scary."
