I was just looking at a part of Mistletoe and Murder and I noticed this bit:

Alexander is completely oblivious to the fact that Hazel likes him but he does realise that something's up with her and he's worried that he's done something wrong or that she doesn't like him anymore ( possible hyperempathy and rejection sensitive dysphoria) . He just has trouble working out specifically what's wrong and exactly what she's feeling. And so he asks her quite bluntly what's wrong and is very honest about it. ( I basically did this because ages ago I saw something where someone said that they didn't like Alexander because he was horrible to Hazel and he was stupid for not realizing how she felt so when I noticed that part of Mistletoe and Murder I was like 'Right! Time to defend Alexander!')

So in conclusion, Alexander is probably autistic and that makes me love him even more.

funny that the fandom ship names are the opposite of the canon ones. like in the books its fitzphie and keephie but the fandom calls them sokeefe and sophitz. like no sophie is the more important one lol

deep analysis of Fitz and Keefe's relationship ( it’s long) and the stages of how their friendship fall apart ( sorry bad english)

Childhood ( headcanon)

In their childhood, Keefe had a hard time making friends (given the cold environment where he lived), he was not at all popular, never spoke and was very shy. but above all he DID NOT CONFIDENCE IN HIM. (he was also a little harassed by the other children and did not dare to defend himself). The day he met Fitz he took him as his savior, Fitz was the only child who spoke to him and gave him strength. Whenever Keefe lacked the strength and confidence in himself Fitz protected him with his status and popularity.

Before idolizing Alvar, Keefe was OBSESSED with Fitz he had unfailing admiration for him he wanted to be like him while Fitz subconsciously loved to be loved and idolized (vacker syndrome) and also loved deep down the fact that Keefe was always in his shadow

that's why I drew Fitz holding Keefe's hand who was crying as a child ( just here ⬇️)

(many have taken it in a romantic sense because they blush and I don't think it's wrong because the border between friendship and love in childhood is very VERY small)

Fitz was the person Keefe told everything to he was his best friend his example etc.

Foxfire :

The year comes when Keefe skips a grade to land in Fitz's class. he is forced to go look for Sophie and is often absent in class (which is canon in the books) while Keefe is forced to face the others alone.

To remove this reputation as a weird boy who skipped a grade, he will start to make jokes and try to become friends with everyone until he hides his sweet and shy side (which comes out sometimes with Sophie or completely in book 9 where he loses confidence in himself). And every time Fitz comes back he sees Keefe becoming more and more popular and having more and more confidence in himself. (he will be proud of himself)

Just before Sophie comes: keefe has complete confidence in himself, he knows that he pleases and detaches himself a little from Fitz. he still considers him his best friend but his example now becomes Alvar with his somewhat insolent and sarcastic behavior (I remember he cheated on his girlfriends) Keefe thinks he is cool and Alvar becomes his idol

from the moment Sophie comes to the lost cities:

Keefe and Sophie become friends and Keefe inevitably falls in love with her. she becomes his diary, he tells her things he forgets to tell Fitz. Because he ONLY sees Sophie. Keefe begins to realize his family's situation and how lucky Fitz is. Keefe's inferiority complex resurfaces and he can't help but be jealous of him

On Fitz's side, a jealousy creeps in because Keefe moves further and further away from him until he tells Sophie everything and nothing to him.

Keefe joining the neverseen / Keefe and Fitz's friendship breaking apart:

Fitz no longer trusts Keefe. but above all it is important to note that he did not get angry when he learned what Keefe did but cried. Fitz also sees that Sophie still trusts him and perhaps says to himself "if I, who have been his best friend since childhood, can no longer trust him why SHE, who has been a simple friend for 2 years, has telephatic meetings and he still trust? what connection do they have? » Fitz feels like he's being replaced by Sophie, which will be confirmed later in the books. he is not only jealous of the fact that Sophie loves Keefe but also of the fact that Keefe loves Sophie more than him.

Fitz's words :

 “like you found out with your mother?" It's canon that Fitz vents a lot on Keefe. This pushed them away because even if Keefe pretends that it doesn't affect him, it destroys him internally and tires him a lot (especially as an empath)

the painting :

Keefe has returned to the lost cities and their friendship is no longer like it used to be. They act as if nothing happened and time passes

Unbearable jealousy coming from Fitz destroyed his character. he is mean to Keefe because he sees that Sophie prefers him AND that Keefe will always be on Sophie's side. “Of course he’ll always be on your side! Keefe always agrees with you! (he spoke in a harsh tone) it creates a deep loneliness in him.

I don't know if the idea came from him, but he decides to ask Keefe to memorize the memory of him and Sophie under the tree and then paint it. he knows it will hurt him, Fitz needs to hurt Keefe (a kind of silent revenge). He will then continue on this path by trying to kiss Sophie in front of Keefe. This will push them further away

Sophie and Keefe meet Alvar :

it is said that Keefe told Fitz about their meeting before he and Sophie talked about it. given Fitz's mind state after his conversation with Keefe the fact that it was KEEFE who met Alvar instead of him and in addition WITH SOPHIE makes him sick (I didn't develop it but Fitz also felt rejected when he saw that Alvar preferred Keefe to him which is normal)

Sophie and Fitz breakup:

they don't have time to talk because keefe is tortured right after in Loamnore.

Keefe only saving Sophie in his hospital room:

when Keefe gives the order for anesthesia everyone falls to the ground including Fitz. Keefe rushes to Sophie to help her and wake her up. he doesn't even think about Fitz. Fitz wakes up and complains about how bad his head hurts because his skull hit the floor (I have to check) I think it must really upset him that Keefe doesn't care about him so much.

Keefe running away from the lost cities and leaves no words for Fitz :

“And you and Keefe are? even though he ran away leaving everyone behind?! » when Fitz says "everyone" he is mostly referring to himself

“He had good reasons you know…” (Sophie)

"NO I don't know anything!" (fitz)

and that's true. Fitz knows NOTHING about Keefe's life how he feels about things. Keefe NEVER confides in him. he doesn't even tell him what he's doing, where he's going

simply because Fitz and Keefe are NO LONGER friends

Keefe and Fitz plan at the end of Stellarlune :

it is said that Fitz and Keefe communicated together after Keefe stole Sophie's dagger. So Keefe explained to him the plan he had in mind but I don't think they had time to reconcile. I don't think they will ever reconcile, there will always be a gaping hole in their friendship.

conclusion: I think Fitz saw Keefe replace him with Alvar, then with Sophie to the point of no longer existing. As for Keefe, his friendship with Fitz was tiring him psychologically.

that speech patterns post got me thinking and I feel like it would be wildly hilarious if Bronte starts picking up teenage slang from his inflicting sessions with Sophie.

Like it's a council meeting, and Emery is like 'yeah we can't seem to get the trolls to cooperate in negotiations' and Bronte just goes "skill issue". And everyone else loses their shit because what the fuck Bronte.

and this is one of my favorite scenes tbh and it huuuurttts. like idk if im reading too much into it but he has this huge power he cant control and the pain makes it go away so... yeah i do think he would get into the habit of hurting himself somehow to make that go away (amongst other things), having no one around to distract him and being all alone, i cant imagine the toll that mustve taken on him 

also since im talking about this, the books often highlight the intense guilt he feels, and all the pain that his family has cost him and often implies suicidal thoughts on his part, like some examples i can think off the top of my head:

and like i could go on and on about how much i adore the way his mental health problems are written but for now im just gonna say that like, it is so hard, with all the guilt, and the urges, its a fight for survival every day, one of the reasons someone may start sh is to calm those urges down and keep themselves from doing something worse, and in keefe's case where he can literally kill himself with oneword, he wouldnt have had much of a choice but to try and do anything he could to distract himself

THE 'ENLIGHTENED SCRIPT'

Warning: This will end up becoming a VERY LONG post. Also it turned out to be vaguely academically phrased — so warning for language too formal for how not-normal I am about this

Disclaimer:

This isn't for the 'actual' Enlightened Language — only to write stuff out in English with a different set of symbols in art (or, let's be honest, just for fun).

I have no proper knowledge of how to make scripts (such as if there are any common conventions to follow). If anything here offends you in terms of its accuracy or correctness, please don't come at me with pitchforks :)

I've done my best to make this explanation simple and thorough, but obviously there may be things that I have forgotten to mention (or things that I've perhaps not even considered). If you want clarification on anything or just have questions about the script, asks are welcome! (any discussion of the script will be tagged '#the enlightened script')

Introduction

The term 'Enlightened Script' (ES from now on) is technically a misnomer, because we know nothing about the Enlightened Language (EL from now on) and thus cannot make a script 'for' it. This script is, however, built upon the little we know about the aesthetic appearance of the actual script of EL, and contains the same twenty-six letters as the Latin Alphabet. It is made primarily for use in writing Modern English (it contains no diacritics, and will thus have little utility for writing in many other languages that use the Latin Alphabet). ES can be used to simulate the actual writing of EL, and represent this simulation in art and inscriptions where desired.

The Enlightened Script

This script has been designed with a view to the aesthetic of the actual script for EL, modelled somewhat from the unreliable example of Vespera's signature. It features heavy use of curls for this reason in the alphabet, with numerals and punctuation marked out by their relative lack of curls and embellishments. Note that symbols may vary from example to example in some small ways, as they are hand-written. If you wish to write ES in any of its forms, follow the general form of symbols from the three examples below).

NUMERALS

Modern ES

'Modern' ES refers to the version of ES that would be used in the modern day by elves and the other Intelligent Species in their daily writing — what we might call the 'normal' version. It is written with the same writing conventions as English, keeping the same spelling and orientation (left to right, then top to bottom). For example:

Here in the top-right of the image, the word 'suldreen' (chosen because it is the only real EL word we know) has been transcribed into Modern ES. It can be seen that the letters have been written out without joining or cursive elements in the manner of an English word. In the bottom half of the page is a quote: 'No reason to worry' (yes I used an Alden quote — it'll be easier to remember and was the first typical Keeper thing I thought of). This has also been written out in keeping with the conventions of writing in English.

NOTE ON PUNCTUATION: You will notice that in the PUNCTUATION section, some forms have been given in red square brackets. These are to be used for Modern ES (such as the colon represented in the image above, as well as the dash in the example). The version of the form outside of the red square brackets is to be used for Traditional ES. Symbols with no variant form remain the same in both versions of ES.

Traditional ES

Traditional ES is the oldest version of ES currently in use. It is the 'old' writing of the elves, which is used in the modern day mostly for adding a sense of grandeur to the atmosphere through its use on signboards, meaning that only its display version, which will be in the next section, is still well-known. I shall explain the proper form of Traditional ES first, however, because it is commonly used by the Ancients and as a basis for many of the codes and ciphers of the Elven world.

You may have noticed in the LETTERS section that the vowels (a, e, i, o, u) of ES are represented by symbols that open to the left, while the consonants are represented by symbols that open to the right. This is a 'remnant' (hush I don't know how to model change in writing systems and besides this is a simulation) of the system of Traditional ES, shown below.

Here is the word 'suldreen' again, transcribed in Traditional ES. The change in orientation is at once apparent, for Traditional ES, unlike Modern ES, is written from top to bottom, then from right to left. As seen in this example, letters branch out from a trunk that forms the word, with each letter's connection to the trunk referred to as a branch. Consonants are written on the right of the trunk, and vowels are written on the left, resulting in all symbols opening outwards. The topmost branch on a trunk is to be read first.

An example of longer text in Traditional ES:

Note that the punctuation orientation for the quotation marks has changed, and now uses the symbols given outside the red brackets. The question-mark remains unchanged, and is written in the same way in both Modern ES and Traditional ES (along with the comma, full-stop/period and exclamation-mark symbols). The sentence starts on the right, and the second line is the next one to the left, which is to be read from the top again.

Signboards in ES

The use of Traditional ES in the modern day remains mostly limited to signboards. To write on a signboard, a line of Traditional ES is, so to speak, rotated 90 degrees anti-clockwise, with the vowels now written on the bottom of a horizontal trunk, and the consonants written on top. It is read from left to right, then top to bottom if applicable (perhaps this may have influenced the left to right orientation of Modern ES). An example below:

The word written in the examples above is 'Everglen', first given in standard Traditional ES, then in the signboard version. In terms of the appearance of this 'signboard version' to elves, it would be read by Ancients as a vertical sign in English is read by us (see the right of the image). To most modern elves, it would simply register as an archaic version of their script, with no particular orientation difference observed.

Numerals and Mathematical Operations in ES

In-universe, the base-ten place-value system was (in my HEADCANON, and I cannot stress this enough) brought to the humans by elves. The writing of their numerals, as may be noted, has some similarities with Roman numerals (which in-universe, the Romans would have learned — again, only as a plausible headcanon — from elves). I have created the numerals to be written somewhat like Roman numerals (with the combination of symbols — I'm not sure of the right term for it). Operations are conducted in the same was as in the base-ten place-value system we use. For example:

In the example on the left (which reads 'Book 9.5'), it can be seen that numerals in Modern ES are written with the same orientation as the letters, with an un-filled dot representing the decimal point. The same applies to Traditional ES, but there is no trunk for numerals (just as there is no trunk for punctuation).

Operations have always been done with a horizontal orientation. Addition, subtraction and multiplication operations are done as shown in the middle-right of the image. The only thing drastically different from our own method of carrying out these operations is that the operation symbol is always to be put in a circle. The same applies to division, which is shown on the far-right. Fractions are written as shown bottom-right. (I don't know about special numbers and stuff okay let's pretend elves can't do math or just use the human symbols and say we got them from elves)

Handwritten examples (for a better understanding of sizing and possibly nicer-looking symbols) have been given under the cut, along with explanations and some interesting notes.

TRADITIONAL

Note that the trunks for Traditional ES have been marked on each line. For numerals and punctuation, the portion of a line on which they are written will not be 'dashed through'.

Notes:

It is possible to 'reverse' Traditional ES to read from left to right by using mirror-forms of the letters, resulting in the vowels written on and opening to the right, and the consonants written on and opening to the left. Punctuation may or may not be used.

Modern ES could be 'reversed' in any of the many ways things written in the Latin Alphabet can be 'reversed' (one of these was likely used by Jolie for her mirror-written diary. Do with that as you will).

Working at Foxfire is just telling Sophie Foster and co to not set stuff on fire and then have them ignore you.

I haven't seen enough on this topic, but why is almost no one talking about Sophie and keefe switching roles?

I think it started during neverseen, but only a tiny bit and very slowly, and once keefe came back it wasn't very progressed. But by legacy you can definitely see it if you are looking. And by stellarlune the role switch is pretty much complete. And it makes me so sad every time I think of it.

Sophie slowly ( very slowly) gaining confidence, while keefe, almost at the same rate, is losing his own confidence. Sophie is learning to be bright and sarcastic. Keefe is becoming dull and honest. Sophie is accepting the role as leader. Keefe is learning to take a step back and let people who care for him help him.

In stellarlune Ro tells Sophie that her and keefe balance each other out. And I couldn't agree more, and I feel like that is an important factor in their relationship. If one starts evolving, the other will evolve in a way that will help and be helped by, the other. It just who they are together.

So when keefe started acting more like Sophie, Sophie naturally started to act more like keefe used to, so that the balance was still there.

Sophie now has enough confidence to share with keefe. Keefe now has the honesty to tone down Sophie's sarcasm. Sophie now has enough light to brighten even Keefe's life. Sophie is finally ready to lead Keefe, and Keefe is ready to follow and really listen to her.

I just find all of this very interesting to think about. And cry about lol.

It's not "only Sophie can do this". That is so far from true. Her friends are:

Fitz, one of the most powerful telepaths of his time. Could've killed someone if his friends didn't stop him. Sort of did kill him. Btw, it was his traitorous older brother.

Biana, one of if not the ONLY vanisher who can completely vanish to every species. Has twice tackled murderers. Almost fell off Mount Everest and is covered in scars because of those times. She's super proud of it. Literally could kill you in a face full of a makeup

Keefe, also tested on. Has 3-4 abilities, two of which are new with him. Snarked the ogre king and won a sparring match with him because of it. Also ripped out THE ogre king's earring. Pretty good with weapons. Can make you listen by word of mouth.

Dex, such a powerful technopath that the council requested him to make special tech instead of an elf that's hundreds of years old and invented most of society's daily gadgets. Often underestimated.

Tam, one of the few shades that can control shadowflux. Joined a group of murderers and killed a friend to save his sister (yeah Keefe's alive, but Tam thought that Stellarlune would kill him and he still did it).

Linh, who held up a river surrounding a kingdom that was poisonous and harder to control when she didn't have full control over her abilities. Btw, she was 15.

She is friends with a variety of elves with crazy powers, ogres, trolls, dwarves, gnomes, and a human.

Only Sophie being able to go in these battles is dumb. It makes sense bcz she's the mc, but not in the actual series.

So I present multi-perspective kotlc.

Solves the "only Sophie can do this" issue. Better for character development. Makes side characters' relationships and lives matter more.

It would change the plot slightly but I think it would help.

I'm slipping back into my sokeefe brainrot. Everytime I think I can be a normal person they pull me back in and I'm just physically unable to shut up about them for like a month.
