Six(ish) Sentence Saturday

I've been really busy the last few Saturdays, but this time I have something to share. It's the beginning of the next chapter of Worth the Wait. I'm hoping for a bit more time to work on it over the next few days, and then I'll post it. For now, here's a sampling.

Before the light crept back into her world, Lucy could hear the beeping of a machine, an intermittent whirring sound, and the ticking of a clock. Then the stale, sanitary smell of a hospital room crept its way along her olfactory nerves and with it the memories of other times she had been in a hospital. She swallowed. She could feel the dry, sore throat she remembered from surgeries she had had years ago. Lastly, she moved her hands just slightly to confirm the presence of stiff, scratchy hospital sheets.

Even in her state of partial awareness, she was surprised at what she discovered.

Though she could feel the scratchy sheets, her left hand wouldn’t move much at all. She could feel a slight twitching, but her fingers didn’t respond to the command from her brain like they usually would.

Her right hand, however, moved normally, but it had a warm weight on it.

Intrigued by what she felt but still in the fog of anesthesia, she willed her eyelids to pull against the heavy, invisible weights on them and flutter open. The dimmed florescent lights and white walls sandwiching a windowed door with mini blinds confirmed to her mind that she was, indeed, in a hospital room. Blinking a few more times, her eyes settled on the source of the warm weight on her hand.

Tim.

The sight of him sitting there next to her made her heart race. Subsequently, the rhythmic beeping from the machine next to her accelerated, drawing Tim’s attention to her. Memories of their past together as well as the couple of hours they spent together at the banquet started to rush and swirl around her mind.  For what seemed like several minutes but was probably less than thirty seconds, Tim and Lucy’s eyes locked on each other.

Lucy tried to think of the right thing to say in a poignant moment like this, but her mind was still working on processing everything, so what she came up with was, “Hi.”

Tim’s mouth, encircled in an uncharacteristic amount of stubble, curled up into a gentle smile as his hand tightened faintly around hers. “Hi back at you.”

Eeeee! I'm excited to get the rest of it finished. Right now it's about 4k long. I estimate it'll be around 6-10k when this chapter is finished. So that'll be a few more days. Thanks for following my story and taking the time to read. That makes a big difference to me.
