 TAKE ME BACK |

With a babbling Annie sitting on her hip, Olivia made sure to get some chores done. If there was one thing that was important to her, it was cleanliness. She probably inherited that from her mother, who didn't accept any mess back then. Or it was the fact that Olivia wanted to take care of the houseᅳ after all, this was their forever home, it had to be perfect.

A soft laugh fell from her lips as Annie tried to reach for the flowers in the vase that Olivia was currently filling with some fresh water. "You like them, hm? They're beautiful, I know."

Of course, the five-month-old didn't answer, instead she just beamed at her mother, her smile able to ease any pain that sat still in Liv's chest from the therapy session this morning.

With a wistful smile, her thoughts constantly on Hugh, she ran her hand over Annie's tiny head before pressing her lips to her forehead and closing her eyes for a moment.

If she hadn't had Annie, if she hadn't had a reason to get up every morning, Olivia wouldn't be nearly as strong as she was at the moment. Without her daughter, she would've let herself go, would probably have drowned in sorrows and ended up in the same clinic as Hugh.

The sound of the doorbell interrupted the sweet, peaceful moment between mother and daughter, whereupon Olivia let out an annoyed groan on her way to the door. It was evening, the sun was already slowly disappearing on the horizon, who could want anything from her?

Jamie had left two hours ago and wouldn't be back until the day after tomorrow because she had to work and there was no one else who would give her a visit without announcing themselves beforehand.

So, she was all the more surprised when she came face to face with a man she had never seen before when she opened the door. His nice smile seemed forced, or at least exaggerated. Instinctively, the raven-haired woman cradled her daughter closer, examining the man.

"Can I help you?", she asked cautiously.

"Hi, I'm Parker." His smile only grew wider as he held out his hand to Olivia. "The new neighbor."

"Oh, hi." Olivia hesitantly shook the man's hand, but quickly pulled hers back, not caring what he thought of her. But she didn't want to be unfriendly either, after all, it was important to maintain a good relationship with your neighbors, right?

Which didn't mean that she had to talk to him for hours. "Then welcome to the neighborhood. I just don't have time right now, I have to put my daughter to bed."

Which was a lie, Annie's bedtime wasn't for another hour, but this way Liv was able to get rid of the man without seeming rude.

"Oh, that's fine. I just wanted to stop by and introduce myself", Parker explained, slightly lifting his hands in the air with a smile. "If you ever need help with anything, the green house down by the lake is mine."

"I'm good, but thanks", Olivia replied with a tight-lipped smile, trying to ignore the uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach.

"Okay, good." Parker, about to walk away as he turned on his heel, turned around again, his gaze much more intense than it had been a moment ago, sending a shiver down Olivia's spine. "It must be hard being a single mom, especially with a husband who, well, put his wife through hell. I'm a really good listener, just so you know."

All manners forgotten, Olivia let out a scoff, her eyes wide with shock. "What the fuck?! That's none of your business, and besides, I'm not a single mom," she hissed, so shocked that this guy knew this part of her life that she didn't really know how to react. And she didn't care about the brief look of shock that crossed his face. He should feel bad. "Stay away from me, I think that's for the best."

"Look, I was just trying to help. I mean-", he began, but was cut off when a shiny black Mercedes pulled into the driveway.

"This can't be true." Annoyed as ever, rocking Annie when she started fussing, Olivia's eyes followed every step her sister took towards her, a wide smile on her lips.

"I see you've already met Parker", the older Sanders' sister chirped, immediately reaching out to take her niece. "Give me my sweet little honeybun."

Rolling her eyes, Olivia refused to pass Annie on to Cami this time. "Are you behind this? That a guy I've never seen before in my life suddenly shows up at my door who happens to know my private problems without anyone else here knowing about it?"

"Oh shit." Cami feigned shock, her hand placed on her chest. "Do you think Jamie let something slip?"

"Uh, Iᅳ I think I should go." Embarrassed, the new neighbor ruffled his short, dark blonde hair, visibly tense as the scene threatened to escalate.

"No, you stay until this is sorted out", Olivia said sternly, not ready to let this go. If someone talked shit about her husband, she would always step in and defend him while making sure to set things right.

"God Liv, leave the poor man alone", Cami smirked proudly as her little sister showed her other side.

"You", she angrily pointed a finger in Cami's face who tried to enter the house, but Olivia blocked her way, earning a snort. "Don't you dare say again that Jamie let something slip, she would never. You seem pretty amused by the whole thing though."

"Relax." Cami waved her sister's dramatic tantrum off with a roll of her eyes, putting her hands on her hips. "I know Parker from school, he's a friend of mine. When he said he was moving here, I thought it couldn't hurt if you met a new man."

"Are you out of your god damn mind?!" Olivia whisper-yelled at the woman with the dyed grey hair, her words dripping with poison as a hint of menace flashed in her usually warm brown eyes. "I have a husband, whether you like it or not!"

"A husband who beats you up? Could you finally stop defending him?!" Just like Olivia, Cami raised her voice, groaning as Annie began to cry. "Look, now you made her cry just because you have to be so stubborn!"

"Excuse me?" Olivia gasped, shaking her head in disbelief as Cami now had the audacity to blame her. "Stay out of my love life. What happens between Hugh and me is none of your business. If you can't support me, stay away. It's that simple", she paused, letting her gaze wander over to Parker. "And take your friend with you."

"Olivia!" Feeling wronged, as she usually did, Cami slammed the side of her fist against the door after Olivia shut it right in her face. "Don't you dare just leave me standing out here!"

But Olivia didn't react anymore, instead the sound of her footsteps drifted further and further into the distance, just like Annie's crying.

"What a bitch!" Shaking her head, Cami slipped her hand into her large bag and pulled out her pack of cigarettes, frantically fishing one out.

"Ah ah, you stay here!" With a lighter in her left hand and the cigarette in her right hand clamped between her index and middle finger, she glared at her friend. "We're not done here."

"What do you want, Cami?" Parker asked with a sigh, his hands deep in the pockets of his blue jeans. "You said she's single, that she might need help. Do you know how that makes me look? Like I'm the biggest idiot."

"Oh please, don't be dramatic." Placing the cigarette between her lips, Cami lit the cancer stick and took a deep drag, letting the smoke slowly slide past her lips as she eyed Parker, humming softly. "She's going to file for divorce, it's only a matter of time, I just know. Don't you want to be her hero? Free her from a guy like Hugh?"

As if he had expected nothing else, he was surprised by Cami once again. "She doesn't want to be freed, Cami! Do you always have to go this far to get what you want?"

"To get this far? I haven't even started yet", Cami huffed, her face twisted in anger. "He hit her almost daily, was miserable and threatened her with a fucking knife while she was pregnant! Why should I keep my feet still?"

"Because it's none of your business. If she wants to forgive him, that's her choice", Parker answered simply but with a sigh. "Look, I don't think it's good either, but isn't that your sister's decision?"

"No. She's putting my niece in danger too!" Cami was just trying to win this little fight, in reality she didn't care much what would happen to Olivia or Annieᅳ she just wanted to be in the right. "Don't give up, Parker. How long have you been looking for the perfect woman, huh?"

"Doesn't matter", Parker said firmly, his tone sharp but still hitting a sore spot for Cami. "I'd just seem desperate if I kept trying to hit on her."

"And? In the best case scenario, you'll end up with a woman by your side who's pretty and smart too. We Sanders women are elegant, we have style and we're capable of taking care of ourselves", Cami said with the slightest smirk, her voice dripping with confidence. "Olivia would be the absolute jackpot. Do you really want to miss your chance?"

"Jesus Cami." Pacing in place, the fine-grained gravel crunching under his sneakers, he ruffled his hair again. "She's pretty, really prettyᅳ but none of that matters if she really and truly loves her husband."

"Please", Cami huffed, taking another drag of her cigarette. "The man could be her father, that's disgusting. Besides, he'll lose control again anyway. Do you think I want to attend my sister's funeral one day because he actually beat her to death?"

Whatever happened, Cami wanted to win, wanted to prove that she was never wrongᅳ but she underestimated how strong love could be, she herself had not yet been lucky enough to find a soulmate like Olivia.

"I mean, I understand you",  Parker began, considering what to say next, but he didn't get that far because Cami's now much softer voice spoke again.

"Listen, next week is Olivia's birthday. Come over, bring a little something and just be niceᅳ not pushy", Cami explained, emphasizing 'not pushy.' "She'll see that you're a good guy."

Which wasn't true. Parker Jennings was someone who couldn't even come close to holding a candle to Hugh. In contrast to Hugh, Parker was someone who liked to party with his friends, get wasted every weekend and occasionally sniff a line of coke to relax or have fun.

Style, elegance, manners, all the things that Olivia fascinated in a man, Parker didn't have. He was a computer nerd who worked and partied and was definitely not capable of looking after a mother and her child.

But what no man could ever do, even if he had Hugh's qualities, was to win Olivia's heartᅳ because that already belonged to her husband.

 TAKE ME BACK |

It was a beautiful summer day when Olivia entered the clinic park two days later, Annie in her stroller while Olivia enjoyed the warm rays of sun on her skin, practically bathing in them. It was nice to be outside, to enjoy a day in nature instead of sitting at home and not knowing how to pass the time.

Jamie was out and about in downtown LA while Olivia was on her way to meet Hugh. Last night he called to tell her that he was allowed to have regular visitors again, after all he was only here for another month and had to slowly get back to normal everyday life.

Olivia hadn't hesitated for a second when he asked her if she would come down with Annie today and visit him. Their daughter had to be far too long without the closeness of her father and Olivia still felt guilty because she hadn't given Hugh the chance to hold Annie after she gave birthᅳ but at that moment it had all become too much for her.

Video chatting and hearing his voice over the phone wasn't the same for a child as having their parent close to them. Still, Olivia had always made sure that Annie at least knew her father's voice.

From a distance, Olivia spotted her husband standing next to a bench, nervously wringing his hands as he looked around until his gaze finally landed on her. A smile immediately spread across his face, and he wasted no time in hurrying towards his two girls.

"Liv, hey", he said excitedly, fidgety as ever. "Thanks for coming."

"You look good, Hugh", Olivia remarked with a smile, sighing contentedly as she looked at her husband.

He was wearing black jeans, simple and clean, and a white shirt with two buttons open at the collar, the bottom part pushed into the waistband of his pants to give it a more elegant look. His hair was immaculately combed into his typical hairstyle.

Hugh seemed to slowly find his way back to himself, Olivia could say that just by looking at himᅳ although it was difficult for her to even look away from her husband.

And Hugh felt the same. Seeing his wife in the sixties-style two-piece, how the orange skirt and matching top with buttons at the front hugged her curves, the elegant white, tight-fitting blouse underneath added a harmonious accent, he fell in love all over again.

Without taking her hand off the stroller, she stretched out her free arm and wrapped it around Hugh's neck, only to be pulled against his chest, his arm circling her waist.

Her breath caught in her throat, her lips slightly parted as she took shallow breaths while the scent of his aftershave clouded her senses. God, she needed this man and yet she wasn't ready to forget everything.

"You really look beautiful, sweetheart." Hugh's words were barely a whisper, but they were still full of sincerity. He timidly ran his fingertips over her cheek, not daring to kiss herᅳ even though that was all he wanted to do. "So beautiful."

"Stop", Olivia whispered with a sheepish smile as a blush spread across her cheeks. "I think there's someone who wants to see you."

Stepping back, sighing softly as she no longer felt the warmth of his body against hers, she pushed the roof of the stroller back a little so that he could have a look at Annie.

The girl happily nibbled on a biscuit, her pants covered in crumbs, which didn't seem to bother the five-month-old. Instead, she squealed happily as she looked up, her eyes wide with curiosity as her gaze wandered between her and the adults.

Annie wasn't a shy child, always relatively open when it came to meeting new people. When she reached up to offer him the biscuit, he wiped his face, sniffling softly, trying his best not to burst into tears.

His daughter had become a thousand times prettier than he could have ever imagined. Seeing her in person and not just on the screen was an absolutely overwhelming feeling that Hugh almost couldn't handle.

"You can hold her if you want", Olivia said gently, watching the scene from the side. Tears of joy welled up in her eyes as she saw the absolute raw emotion in Hugh's features, how big the desire was to hold his daughter.

"Are you sure?", he asked, his voice shaking slightly as he swallowed hard. "If it'sᅳ"

"Hugh, just hold your daughter. It's okay", she urged him with the biggest smile as he sniffled again before finally lifting Annie into his arms, making sure to be careful.

"Oh my God", he exclaimed, his voice threatening to crack as Annie immediately beamed at him and held her hands against his cheeks to explore his face, the biscuit long forgotten. "She's so perfect."

"She is", Olivia agreed immediately, her own voice thick with emotion. How long had she been waiting for this moment? "Do you wanna sit down?"

"Yeah..yeah, let's sit down." Without taking his eyes away from Annie, holding the little girl with both arms, he followed Olivia to the nearest bench and sat down next to her.

For the next five minutes he just watched what Annie was doing, listened to her babbling and had to realize that all of this was really happening, all the while cooing at her. His daughter was by far the most beautiful thing he had ever seen besides Olivia and his chest was almost bursting with pride.

"Thank you for this, Liv." Finally able to tear his eyes away from the little person in his arms, he looked at Olivia with gratitude, placing a hand on her thigh. "You have no idea how much it means to me that I can spend time with my daughter."

"You could've seen her much sooner if visitors had been allowed", she replied with a small smile. Olivia seemed hesitant for a moment, but then placed her head on his shoulder while she wiped some drool from the corner of Annie's mouth with a cloth. "I want her to finally be able to build a bond with her father, she deserves this."

"I'll be there, I promise you. As soon as I'm out of here I'll make up for everything", he said determinedly, taking a deep breath as she laid her head on his shoulder. He would never have thought that such a small gesture could feel so good. "Well, of course only if you want that."

"Of course I do." Olivia's usually gentle tone was full of determination, her brown eyes looking up at him. "I want our little family, Hughᅳ I want us."

As their eyes locked, Olivia's breathing became increasingly shallow again, her eyes moving from Hugh's green orbs down to his lips. She could see how hard it was for him to hold back, and she felt the same. But the fear that things were happening too fast, that they would rush things, won out.

Sighing, she tilted her head to the side, still snuggled into Hugh's side. "I'm sorryᅳ that I'm not ready to forget everything yet."

"Stop apologizing." With a slow shake of his head, Hugh placed his arm on top of the bench and scooped Olivia closer to him. "We'll get through this, and we'll do it at your pace. Don't ever feel bad about it, okay?"

"You're a really great guy, you know that?" Smiling, she ran the tip of her nose along his jawline, eliciting a contented sigh from him while feeling completely content herself. "Can you come to my birthday? I want you there."

"Really?" Joy bubbled up in the pit of his stomach when he heard that Olivia wanted him there that day. A month ago, he had already bought a gift for her in town with his doctor's permission to leave for an hour. "I think that shouldn't be a problem. When I've spoken to the doctor later, I'll call you and let you know, okay?"

"Yeah, sure, take your time", Olivia answered eagerly, smiling up at him. "It wouldn't be half as nice without you, I hope you can leave the clinic for a few hours."

"Believe me, that's all I want", he whispered, his lips close to hers, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth when Annie squealed again.

"I think she wants our attention", Olivia joked with a soft laugh, her hot breath brushing his skin.

Hugh suppressed the urge to kiss her and just smiled instead. "And I have no problem giving her my full attention."

For the next two hours, Olivia forgot all the problems and enjoyed the time with Hugh and Annie in the park. They hadn't had such light-hearted conversations in over a yearᅳ they had even eaten ice cream together. Something completely normal, but also something that meant a lot to the couple.

Olivia had deliberately not mentioned the incident with Cami and Parker, she was too worried that bad news could trigger something in Hugh. Besides, she really just wanted to concentrate on her little family.

True

I know adverbs are controversial, but "said softly" means something different than "whispered" and this is the hill I will die on.
