her father could only look down at his wifes arms when they revealed a GIRL was his firstborn. growing up , makio was aware of her fathers desire for a son. they tried , continued until her mother was pregnant once more . . . during that time, her father trained her like a son but she knew . . . deep down , makio would never meet his expectations. a BOY ! he was thrilled , eyes no longer focused upon her “ show her, ” words spoken without a second thought . . . how to tend too a man , what's expected for when she married . . . how and what would appease her selected husband ( if chosen ). in the shadows she shrunk in his eyes , makio couldn't blame her brother . . . watching him grow --- surrounded by men : father , uncle , brother , and cousins. her hearts filled with static , though she continues as if it didn't bother her. correcting those younger than her , makio could only repeat the process until the arrangement.
nervous at first , unsure of what to expect . . . three wives. chained , she was prepared to accept this fate but quickly , the gods removed the veil before her eyes. unraveling quickly , makio found herself in the arms of those who loved and appreciated her. from morning to night , makio could lay her head down without wondering " what if ? " . . . rather , she woke up the next day looking forward to what would come. a mission ? training ? makio would lay down her life for them.
she remembered their first night . . . makio listened as suma rambled. it wasn't until hinatsuru asked for her thoughts that makio was untangling everything she was taught. “ you're not alone, not anymore, ” did she read her mind ? was she easy to read . . . but maybe it's because they were similar. women in a mans world --- she hesitates at first but eyes that held no judgment , with expectations : makio awkwardly smiles. since than , she'd flourished and quickly open up to them. her present self wouldn't even recognize the girl she was before.
