Yes! This bothered me SO much when I watched it, especially the scene with all the friends and family at the police station. It felt, to me, that there was a big tension in the scene of when Claire and Foggy would talk to each other, how they were going to navigate Matt's identity and what they could share to get a better understanding of what was going on, but it just never happened?

Very odd all around.

I’ve been rewatching Defends it bothers me so. much. that there is ZERO reference made to Claire’s history on Daredevil with Matt*. There are 2 or 3 very vague references to Claire existing pre-Luke Cage: I think they mention her hospital being attacked by the Hand, and she mentions moving uptown to get away from superhero stuff. But nothing more specific and nothing that actually does so much as allude to Matt. Currently I’m on episode 7 and there’s the scene of Claire talking to Colleen about her involvement with powered people and in that scene Claire mentions Luke, Danny and Jessica all by name. But not Matt. Watching the scene, it’s possible to interpret it as Claire not even knowing that Matt is in the building or has met the other three. Colleen mentions that Claire wasn’t the type to just stand by and let stuff happen “even before [she] met Luke” which is a line that suggests that LUKE is the beginning of Claire’s involvement with powered people. Not Matt. Which seems to suggest that Colleen doesn’t know about Matt. AND an episode or two earlier, there’s the scene where all of the Defenders loved ones are put into a room together to keep them safe meaning that Claire is in a room with Foggy whom she knows. But she never speaks to him. Instead we just get Trish and Malcolm commenting on Foggy and Karen. 

It’s beyond not writing in a scene between Claire and Matt, or a scene where the others find out she knows Matt too, it feels almost like they went out of their way to avoid directly acknowledging Claire and Matt knowing each other. There are so many places where they could mention it and they awkwardly don’t. My best guess is that originally there was a scene where Claire realized they’d happened to join up with Matt too, or Luke and Matt realized they both knew Claire or something like that, and so they were keeping quiet on it but then the scene got cut. But again, there was a scene with Claire, Foggy and Karen all in the same room so I’m not sure how they would have kept everyone from realizing until at least midway through episode 7. 

So it’s just weird.  There’s the one line each exchanged between Matt and Claire in episode 8 but even that doesn’t require that they know each other to make sense. So it’s unclear when Claire finds out that Matt is involved and it’s if Luke, Danny and Colleen EVER find out that Matt knows Claire (and that they sorta almost dated). 

And I don’t understand why. And it seems like a missed opportunity.

i think villains in general provide better, more epic romances because they’re allowed to go to extremes. they’re allowed to put their love over the greater good. they’re allowed to be selfish. the best a hero can offer you is number two, because their duty comes first. villains, though. villains will burn down the world for a last kiss goodbye.
