Perhaps The Most Dedicated Mimic In The Insect World, Sunbittern Butterflies Undergo A Dramatic Metamorphosis

Perhaps the most dedicated mimic in the insect world, Sunbittern Butterflies undergo a dramatic metamorphosis unlike most any other. Not content with mere eyespots as warning, they are also the only butterfly with fully-articulated wings and can fold them as one would expect a real bird. When threatened, Sunbitterns will plant themselves on their front pair of legs and hoist their bodies skyward, hiding their tender abdomens behind an impressive wall of ‘feathers’.

A common sight at birdfeeders and city parks, Eastern Gray Squirrels are flightless cousins to the more familiar Rock Pigeon, as attested by their soft, downy feathers and remarkably expressive eyes. Introduced to large cities across the country in an attempt to teach urban children to be kind to all birds no matter their handicap, these wingless avians have thrived upon the inherent generosity and kindness of citydwellers. Next time you swing through a city park, remember to bring some fresh green beans or apple slices to share!

Of the few extant fixed-wing bird species, the Hermit Warbler is perhaps the most intriguing. Where other flapless birds are content to catch strong winds in order to take flight (thus limiting their habitat), these plucky warblers will climb coniferous trees as tall as two Robosauruses stacked atop each other before leaping off and gliding. It is currently unknown why they do this however, as their diet primarily consists of spiders and other crawling insects that do not require being airborne to catch.

Once a bafflement to the finest minds at The Academy of Bird Sciences, the remarkable mystery surrounding the diurnal behaviour of Burrowing Owls has finally been solved with an unexpected twist: they are completely blind and they are not diurnal. What were once hypothesized to be protective ‘hatless brim’ feathers are actually specially shaped to channel forward-facing sound into their ear holes, allowing effective around the clock hunting. The belief they were diurnal was easily debunked upon realising every ornithographer contracted by TABS to study these birds would retire to bed at a reasonable hour.

Juvenile Black-crowned Night Herons are, as a whole, completely done with being woken up before noon. Capable of displaying an astonishing 3.2 teenagersful of contempt for societal norms, these rebellious fledglings can often be found lurking near local malls and skateparks. The Academy of Bird Sciences strongly recommends they only be approached by specially-trained persons under the age of 27, as their withering scorn has been observed to break the morale of even the most stalwart authority figures over thirty.

Contrary to popular belief, the Kiwifruit Bird is not named after the Kiwifruitbirdfruit. Both the small, round, flightless fruit and the bird it resembles are named after Elrod Kiwifruit, one of the first White explorers of New Zealand. Like Elrod, these fat birds are nearsighted and xenophobic, with a tendency to claim for themselves the property of others through sheer disbelief that other cultures may have equal value and precedent claims.
