Nightmare
Her mouth was taped shut and her hands her handcuffed. Lewis was standing over her with a wild look in his eyes. She tried to scream but the tape prevented her from making any sound above a whimper.
This was it, he was going to kill her and there was nothing she could do about it.
“Mom! Mom, wake up!”
Olivia was slowly pulled back to reality. Her heart was pounding in her ears and she was covered in a cold sweat.
“Mom!”
Her eyes focused on Noah standing in front of her clutching Eddie to his chest. Tears were in his eyes and he look scared.
“Hey,” she sat up, “It’s okay, I’m okay.”
“You were yelling,” his voice broke on the last syllable.
“I’m so sorry sweetheart. It was just a bad dream.”
She reached for him and hoped he didn’t notice her hands shaking. He climbed onto the bed and curled in her lap. She held tight to him reminding herself that she was home and that Lewis was dead. She was scared to close her eyes again, those images were so fresh and she knew she wasn’t going to sleep any more that night. She focused on her breathing and her son in her arms.
“Do you want to stay with me tonight?”
It was as much for her as it was for him.
“Will it help you feel better?” he asked.
She couldn’t stop the small smile that came across her lips.
“Yes, it will help me feel much better.”
He crawled off her lap onto the other side of the bed.
“Do you want Eddie? He always helps me feel better after a bad dream.”
Her heart melted at the sincerity in his voice.
“You keep him. I have you to help me feel better.”
She pulled the covers around his shoulders has he snuggled in next to her.
“I love you mom.”
“I love you too sweet boy.”
“Please don’t ever become a stranger
whose laugh I could recognize anywhere.”
