A Ritual for Yule

Winter Solstice is a time of new beginnings. It’s the darkest time of the year, but it also marks the time where the light begins to grow. Rituals dedicated to new beginnings - such as personal growth, business, new love - are particularly powerful at this time. In the darkness we sow the seed and nourish it so it can burst forth strong in the Spring.

Here is my ritual for Yule.

You will need:

green altar cloth

red fruit or flowers, pomegranate is perfect but whatever you can find will suffice

charcoal and banishing herbs, such as dragon’s blood, garlic (beware, stinky!), nettle, dandelion, rosemary, juniper, sage

paper and pen

bayberry candle if you can mange it, otherwise a green candle will suffice

a chamomile tea bag - empty the contents and grind to a powder. If you don’t have chamomile, mint can be used instead (which is what I’ll be doing as my pantry is more bare than I thought!)

vegetable oil

Open a circle if that is your custom.

Cover the altar with a green cloth to represent the growth you intend. The red represents the life blood, and pomegranate represents Persephone, the goddess of the Spring. 

If you like to work with deity, call upon Persephone as she is the Queen of the Underworld and the Spring. She will help destroy what no longer serves you and grow your intentions in the Spring. Hekate is another great option, as is Hades or Osiris.

First, you will banish bad habits or energies you no longer want in your life. Take a moment and really think. Write each thing down on a slip of paper. 

Now light the charcoal and the banishing herbs. Throw each slip of paper into the fire, one at a time, and say “I call to the darkness of this night, banish _______ from my life”. When you have finished, with all your bits of paper, say “the night takes and I am released.”

Now you have made some space, best fill it with some sunshine!

Take your candle and cover it lightly with the vegie oil and roll it in the chamomile. Chamomile is a herb which protects against psychic attack, is considered lucky and to attract fortune of all kinds. 

As you do this, say “With this herb and with this light, I set my intention this dark night: into my life love and luck will come, growing now as does the Sun. May happiness and love increase for all I see. This is my intention, So Mote it BE!" 

Winter Solstice is an excellent time to undergo a vision quest to find your magical name, a totem animal, a mantra, or other empowering insights. While your circle is open you may wish to ask for messages from your deity or guide, or to send healing energy to the planet.

When your candle is burned down, close your circle. Cast your ashes into the garden and bury them - they are gone!

Yule is also a time for friends and family, and a nice warm glass of mead. Yum! A great way to ground yourself, if you want my opinion. Happy Yule xx

SPELLS DON'T REQUIRE INGREDIENTS!!!

I can't stress enough how sick i am of seeing "oh being a witch is so draining for my bank account haha" or "oh i dont have the money for ritual items or to construct an altar oh what can i do"

First you can stop relying on external objects to do things for you. You don't need to have a bronze dagger or sage to save you from an evil entity. You dont need to stuff a poppet or a jar full of dead plants to bring what you desire. You dont need an altar to talk to the God's

Witches have had to remain in hiding for CENTURIES, many couldn't afford to have altars or props, they didnt have the luxury of affording herbs or whatever else. But they still got shit done

The Gods do not give a shred of a shit how rich you are either. If you would like to have money, use your powers and get it

All you need is to:

Raise your energies through meditation and/or yoga until you feel a powerful energy buzz

Direct that energy through a present tense affirmation (e.g I am attracting a large sum of money, this money is all mine to keep and spend as i please)

Visualize whatever it is you want as realistically as possible. If its money you desire then visualize a stack of money in your hands, smell it, feel your fingers run across all the bills

BELIEVE in yourself, doubts about your powers will cause issues in your spellwork

That is all! You're a witch ffs, rely on nothing but YOU

Props are props and nothing more, unless they are seriously charged with energy and cleaned often, they dont do much outside setting the mood. If you want props, thats okay but you dont need them

Poppet Tutorial

Original inspiration for this lesson comes from iladisparu’s Voodoo Doll Tutorial on YouTube. I make my dolls slightly differently, but they’re very similar :) 

Materials:

Yarn (color of your choice)

String

Sewing needle

Buttons

Other Accessories of your choice

Step 1)

Loosely wrap the end of your yarn around four fingers and tie a knot.

Step 2)

After tying a knot, wrap the end of the yarn around your four fingers 8-9 times. Then, remove the bundle from your hand, and, making sure it doesn’t come undone, begin wrapping the loose end of the yarn around the center of the bundle (second picture). Next, separate the bundle into four sections so that it resembles a sort of butterfly (these are going to become the doll’s limbs!).

Step 3)

Once you’ve separated your bundle into four different smaller bunches, start wrapping the loose end of your yarn around the center of the bundle to create a fifth bunch of loops (This is for the doll’s head, I recommend making 4-5 loops for this section). Then, you can begin solidifying your doll by wrapping the loose end of the yarn up and down one of the bundles of loops (do this for all four limbs). 

TIP: Every time you make a limb, wrap the loose end of your yarn around the doll’s center before moving onto the next limb. This helps keep everything together!

Step 4)

Once you’ve finished all the limbs, you can move onto the head. Wrap the loose end of your yarn up and down the bundle of loops dedicated to the head and bend the resulting stub over. Then, begin wrapping the loose end of your yarn around that, keeping in mind you want the result to look spherical. 

Step 5)

Almost there!

When you’ve finished making the head, you can either glue the loose end of your yarn in place on the doll, or, using a large needle, weave it back into the doll’s body. 

At this point, your doll is a blank canvas and ready for you to decorate however you please. I personally just sewed a couple of black buttons for eyes onto mine, but the possibilities are endless. :) Just don’t forget to give your new friend a name.
