Neon Venus (work in progress screen capture) on Flickr.
A take on fertility symbols, like the Venus of Willendorf. Still a work in progress, the color palette may shift a bit. Feed back is welcome.
Ideation:
This is a comment on the American desire for material wealth, especially symbols of opulence that are embodied in things like jewelry, which sometimes use religious icons. The entire work is composed of an automaton, which is the likeness of an African female, whose slave labor helped build America’s wealth. The spikes on the head symbolize the centuries of torture, slavery, segregation, civil inequality, educational and financial oppression which has lead many poor people to associate money with success. The cross on the necklace is two-fold: it symbolizes the way some white Americans rationalized slavery, to their own slaves, giving them a Christian identity, but telling them that the Bible justifies their enslavement. The second part of the cross deals with the way some people show how blessed, financially, they are by God that they acknowledge it by wearing golden crosses on their bodies. This is in juxtaposition with the female form because of the objectification of women and the societal pressures of financial stability, and material wealth in order to procreate. The African female also represents all humanity, and the desire to reproduce, if you believe in the “Out of Africa” theory, and that we all have a common African ancestor.
I hope that makes sense, grammatically and conceptually.

Didn’t make the cut, but a collaboration design with @protonfactories got a second of time on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

Touch up on this commission, and its out the door!
