The Book Keeper
Kili x Reader
Fandom: Tolkien
Summary: On an unsuspecting summer afternoon, Gandalf the Gray shows up on your front porch and, much like he did to Bilbo, sweeps you up into an adventure you never could have imagined. With the knowledge of things to come, will you be able to change the ending?
Note: For my sanity, we’re pretending the book describes the dwarves the way they look in the movies. Also I’m gonna deviate a bit from book canon and dip my toes (more like my entire leg) into movie canon just because things flow a little better that way. Also also, I took some liberties with the Dwarvish courting customs. I will probably also be uploading this to AO3 at some point, separated into chapters for easier navigation.
Bear with me and behold my Magnum Opus.
Warnings: canon-typical violence, the Hobbit spoilers, alcohol/drinking, some angst but a fluffy ending, mentions of injuries, kind of a slow burn but very fluffy

Stuck. You were stuck. You read the last few sentences back to yourself, but they didn’t make anything click. You’d lost your steam and now, you were stuck once again.
Writing was a lot harder than it looked, that was for sure, but writing something fantasy? You were finding the task nearly impossible. When you’d started the project several months before, it had seemed so fun. You’d grown up on Narnia, on Lord of the Rings. Building your own fantasy world would be quite the task, you’d known, but perhaps you didn’t know quite how time consuming it would be, let alone when you added in the characters and their characterizations, which fantasy creatures to include, how the magic would work, how the weapons would work and so on and so forth.
Thinking about it too much gave you a headache, so you sat back in your chair, closing your laptop. Maybe you needed a break. Some more caffeine, maybe, some stretches for your strained neck and sore wrists.

A LESSON IN ARCHERY (part I/II)
Summary: Certain member of the company might have gotten Kíli smitten. Sadly, Thorin is not exactly fond of her, and the last thing Kíli wanted was to go against his uncle's will.

A/N: I have a Dwalin x reader request on the making I'm kinda struggling with, so in the meantime, enjoy this first part of a two-part fic of Kíli <3
Rogue-durin-16 masterlist

"Pretty" I commented, moving away from Fíli and in Y/n's direction. "the bow, I mean."
"Sad," she faked a pout at me and then resumed her excrutination of her newly acquired weapon. "I thought you meant me."
"Defining you only as pretty would be offensive." she snorted and I gave her a playful smile with my arm extended, prompting her to hand me the bow. "You know how to use it?"
"I thought you could teach me?" she suggested, a mischievous grin on her lips. "I could use some lessons." she took a couple of steps towards me and stood way closer than what was necessary to pick up the bow from my hands. "If you don't mind, of course."
I had to fight the urge of closing the space between us and crashing my lips against hers. "I do not." instead, I allowed myself to steal a stare at her mouth, tightened due to her smile. "I will get more alone time with you."
"Oh, you would love that," she teased, grabbing the bow and stepping back. "Wouldn't you."
"Indeed." I confessed, biting my lower lip. "can you blame me, though?"
"Kíli." I looked over Y/n's shoulder to be met with Thorin’s cold eyes. "Come, I have to speak to you."
"I'll go do... something... Elsewhere." Y/n turned around to take a look at Thorin before leaving me there.
"What is it?" I inquired, stalking to my uncle, who led me away from any nosy ears before starting the conversation.
"What do you think about Y/n?" his question was cryptic, even more than usual.
"I think she's kind and funny." I spoke not entirely truthful. "She learns fast."
"Fíli mentioned you're fond of her." my jaw clenched and my shoulders tensed. "Is that true?"
"No!" I replied, way too fast for it to be a reliable answer. "I mean, yes but only as far as friendship reaches."
"That's good." Thorin’s eyes dug into Y/n's back as she talked with Bofur. "I wouldn't like to get in your heart's way."
"Wait- what?" I burrowed my brows in confusion. "Why would you have to get in my heart's way?"
"You are a prince, Kíli." Thorin spoke apathetic. It was no secret that he, at his best, tolerated Y/n, but it felt like he was taking that to another level. "I could never allow such relationship."
"But- why? What does that have to be with anything?" I knew my already poor lie was crumbling, but I was not only confused, I was concerned.
"She's a hobbit." the despise in his tone made me step back. "It's just not possible." I stood there with my mouth in agape and my heart aching. "Kíli, do you understand?"
"But-"
"Spare your heart, nephew." he spun around ready to leave and placed a hand over my shoulder, giving me an intent glance. I knew by the look in his eyes that he was dead serious. "Do not suffer for what it cannot be."
Once I was left alone, leaving the command to sink in whilst looking at Y/n. How was I supposed to spare my heart? She already had it.
READER'S P. O. V.
I grabbed another arrow from the quiver, tied with a belt around my waist, and placed it on the bow, taking my arm back and aiming as I could before shooting.
I missed my target. Again.
A frustrated huff escaped my lips. Not all the fault fell over my capabilities with the bow though, it also happened to be dusk, and light was lacking. It was a pity that the only moment I could practice was the end of the daylight.
I repeated the process once more; I missed once more. Maybe if Kíli hadn't been avoiding being near me at all, I could have asked him for help.
Another try.
Just when I was about to let go of the arrow, I heard a voice behind me. "Don't do it like that."
"Are you stalking me?" I joked, turning my torso to meet the prince's eyes.
"I have better things to do." Kíli retorted in what was meant to sound as a joke, but inevitably hid some hostility.
"Now that you're here, though," I lowered the bow and made the arrow spin before handing it to him. "Why don't you teach me how to do it?" He looked to his left as if he was meditating if he should leave or not. "You agreed on giving me some lessons and I'm yet to have the first one."
"Okay," his hands picked the weapon from mines. "it'll be a quick lesson so pay attention will you?" I nodded, leaning against the tree besides me. "stand like-" he stomped his foot on the floor to lead my attention there. "this." he leaned on me and took an arrow from the quiver, getting a little too close before immediately retreating. "Take your arm back- chest up, arms steady, and let go." The arrow hit the center of the target and he handed me the bow back. "try."
I grabbed another arrow and followed his steps, in a seemingly perfect way, but before I could shoot the arrow he stopped me.
"Wait, not like this- your body has to be more-" his hands went to my hips and turned me to the side with a tug. "there. Also, it's better if you do it quick." he guided my arms and spread them faster than I had done. "try again." I did it once more, this time as he told me. "okay now chest up."
"my chest is up." I replied, and immediately observed him moving behind me. "what-" I involuntarily gasped when his hands tweaked my shoulders. "we're running out of light." I commented slightly stressed.
"we still have time, take a breath and relax." he whispered near my ear, "hold on like this." his hands lingered on my shoulders for a second, after which he moved away and circled me to stand by my side. "now."
My arrow hit right besides his and dug deep into the target. "Yes!" I exclaimed putting down the bow once more. "That was a great shot."
"I am a great teacher." he stated with a grin that as soon as had appeared, vanished. "I should go."
"Hold on, Kíli," I grasped his wrist and brought him back to me. "Tell me what's the matter?" I questioned, already tired of his sudden distant attitude towards me. "Did I do something wrong?"
"No!"
"Then what's the reason for this behavior?" his eyes told me he wanted to speak up, but his lips didn't even part. "I thought we were friends?"
"We are."
"Then?"
"Thorin is not fond of you."
I widened my eyes in shock. "Does that mean you are not allowed to be fond of me?"
He shook his head no. "It is not like that."
"How is it then?"
There was that look again, though he refrained himself from saying whatever he wanted to, once more.
"You should come back to the others," he simply replied, setting free from my grasp. "it's getting late."
"What about you?" I questioned with a frown as I walked to the target in order to get the arrows back.
"I was sent to scout." he replied distractedly, for he had his attention on our surroundings to assure no one was with us, nor friend nor foe.
I stopped walking back to my previous position. "Alone?"
"I won't go too far," he soothed me, kicking a small rock with his boot. "I will probably be back way before daybreak."
"I don't think it's safe."
Kíli looked up from his feet to meet my eyes, "Don't stress about it," the dwarf then gifted me a brief yet sincere smile. "I'm stealthy."
I sighed with a mix of tiredness and defeat. "whatever you say, little prince."
He let out a soft laughter and casted his gaze down again. "In truth we didn't need Bilbo, I could—" he almost choked on his words when, unexpectedly for the both of us, I steadied myself with his arm and stood on my tiptoes to plant a peck on his cheek.
"If you're not back before daybreak I will worry." I warned him, making my way back to the improvised camp without sparing a second look at him, fearing he might notice the blush on my cheeks even with that poor light we then had.
I, therefore, wasn't able to see him standing there, dumbfounded, with his own face red and his fingertips ghosting over his cheekbone.

Kili Durin Masterlist

Deep within the forest flows a rock filled stream. The water ripples gently over the lone occupant, softly washing away layer after layer of grime and filth.
The dark haired dwarf sits, propped up against the mossy overgrowth that separates land from water, basking in the evening sun. The air is beginning to cool, easing the growing aches that have settled into his muscles. Aches and pains gained from the battles he’s had to overcome in order to get to this point in the company’s journey.
His mind is quiet as he relaxes to the sound of the subtle babbling as the water splashes against the rocks.
The peace is broken as he hears leaves rustle and twigs snap to the side of him. The dwarven prince is quick to take his blade, pointing it fearlessly towards the dense thicket to his left.
“A-apologies, I did not mean to startle you.” You poke your head out, a flush growing on your supple cheeks as you take in the sight of the young prince in front of you.
You hear your name leave his soft lips, the sword returning to its place on the ground. A glint appears in the young dwarves' eyes.
“If you want to catch me in a state of undress, you need only ask, little Hobbit.” He teases, a smile tugging his lips upwards, creasing his cheeks as it grows.
“Everyone else has returned to camp, you, however, have not. I just wanted to make sure you were okay.” You push away the heat that grows as you take in the toned muscles of his stomach, water rippling up against the hair coating his chest.
The fact that you’re able to form a fully functioning thought with him in such a state is frankly a miracle.
His face softens at your words, however the teasing lilt to his smile remains. You would expect nothing less from him.
“Perhaps, I was just relishing in the rare quiet away from the company.” His strong hands look soft as they lightly brush over the water surrounding him.
“Perhaps.” You return his teasing smile with one of your own, eyes shining as you watch him. “But I strongly doubt that. You live purely on chaos and mischievery.”
The dwarf erupts in a sudden single laugh. The sound makes your heart race, knowing you were the reason behind such a joyful noise.
“Then why do you suppose I am still out here?” He tilts his head at you, his eyes full of genuine curiosity.
“I would hazard a guess that those locks of yours are in need of a good wash, and perhaps you struggle to clean them as thoroughly as they require.” You continue to tease, not wanting to bring down the prince’s mood. It appeared as though you had improved it so far.
As the company left to wash away the victory of their battle, you had seen the forlorn expression on Kili’s face. His faraway eyes, and fidgeting fingers. You had been itching to go to him, to demand to know the reason behind his upside down smile, unused to seeing such a look on his face.
You forced yourself to be patient. To wait until nightfall, when the others were asleep. But when they came back without him, well who were you to resist such an invitation. Your concern and worry, running deep within you.
“Are you offering?” You hear the insecurity that he tries to hide in his quiet voice, peering up at you from under his lashes.
There is a second meaning behind his question. An old dwarven custom. He knows it, he hopes you do as well. But you are a Hobbit, and he fears the meaning will be lost on you.
“If you would allow it, prince.” Your voice is soft as you speak, taking a careful step towards him.
“I-I would allow it.” He’s nervous, the shy tone in his voice giving him away.
You move closer, heart beating heavily in your chest as you sit on the waterbank behind him. Allowing your bare feet to slip into the water, you hesitantly place them either side of his waist. You begin to gently brush your fingers through his wet hair, scratching his scalp softly and relishing in feeling him relax under your ministrations.
“Why are still out here Kili, alone? The truth this time.” Your voice is almost a whisper, unwilling to break the peaceful aura that surrounds you both.
“I am not alone.” He responds, defensive and dismissive. You feel a small amount of tension build in his body as he bristles.
“Kili.” You give his hair a soft tug, making him groan in a way that you cannot decipher between pain or pleasure. Gently, you let your fingers stroke the skin at the base of his hairline, encouraging him to speak to you.
“The others, they mean no harm…” He begins, lowering his head as you run your fingers up and down the expanse of his neck. “They jest, that is all.”
“What is it they say?”
“Nothing.” He bristles again, pulling away from you, just enough to let your fingers drop from his warm skin.
“You can tell me. You can tell me anything Ki.” Your fingers find the hem of your skirt, running along the stitching as you wait for his response, letting him take his time.
“I cannot grow a beard.” Comes his quiet voice, so quiet you almost miss it.
“Then what is this sprouting out of your face?” You raise your fingers, reaching around to softly stroke his jaw. He huffs. but subtly nuzzles further into your hand, a quiet eagerness in his movements. “You are younger than them, are you not? It simply takes time. And even so, I like your beard just the way it is.”
Kili sits silently in front of you, his head tilted back into your hand. You can see the way his eyes are closed, his features relaxed under your fingers.
“Is that all they say?” You ask, “Surely they see your face everyday. Why wait until now?"
His eyes remain closed, but his features are now tense, scrunched tightly as he speaks. You continue your movements, fingertips dancing along the length of his jaw.
“My body is not- It’s softer, not firm like theirs. They jest that I am still the dwarfling among them.” The end of his sentence is muttered, almost petulantly. You can’t help the soft smile that lights your face.
You let your hands drop to trail along his shoulders. Dipping down to his collarbones, you feel his heart racing beneath his chest.
“You must not let them get to you, they mean no harm.” You swear to yourself that you will be having words with them all later that night. They may not realise what they were doing, but they would once you were finished with them. “You are perfect, my prince. Just as you are.”
You let your hands walk their way back up his shoulders, his neck. Until they find their way back into his hair again. You begin to gently run your fingers through it, pulling a collection of strands together to braid it.
As you twist the strands delicately together, a strong hand closes over yours to stop you.
“I- You should stop that.” Kili twists in your grip, looking up at you with an unreadable expression. Something desperate, and almost sad, in his eyes.
“You do not want me to?” You ask as you watch the internal fight the dwarf seems to be having in front of you.
“I do. More than I have wanted for anything.” His hands find yours, closing around them tightly in your lap.
“Then let me.”
The sound that escapes him can only be described as incredulous, as if he refuses to accept that it could be so simple.
“You do not understand.” His tone turns desperate as he squeezes your hands.
“I do, I asked Fili.” You reply simply, a small smile on your lips as you watch his expression turn from desperate to uncertainty to awe in mere seconds.
In truth you had spoken to his brother weeks ago, determining exactly how one goes about courting a dwarf. Only now had you been able to muster the courage to act on your desires.
“I would like nothing more than to court you, Kili. I do not know or understand most of your dwarven customs, but I know what’s in my heart, and that is you.”
Kili frantically begins to pull at his clothes that are strewn across the ground beside you, all the while attempting to stay underwater to keep himself covered from your innocent eyes. There’s a deep flush on his cheeks as the water splashes around him.
He returns to his place in front of you, slightly breathless, with a pair of beads in his hands.
“I made them. For us. I had hoped one day that you would grant me the honour of braiding your hair, though it appears you beat me to it.” The shy smile on his face is blinding, your cheeks begin to hurt from the sheer size of your returning smile.
You take the beads delicately, holding them in your hand. You turn them this way and that to inspect the small details carved into the light wood.
“Let me finish,” Your voice is soft as you look back up at him, “then it would be my honour to wear your braid, Kili.”
He leans up to you, brushing your hair away from your face before pressing a soft, quick kiss to your lips. Just as fast he’s turning around again, dropping fully into the water, eagerly waiting for you to continue braiding his hair.
You cannot help the small chuckle that leaves you, or the way you kiss the very top of his head, before carefully beginning to separate the strands to create your very own braid within his dark locks.
