It starts with fires. Electricity, water, both equally bad, painful, dangerous combinations. Then black, death, unending grief. Riddled with agony. You don’t feel it. You feel only the aftermath, what comes next after the water, the fires.

Then you wake up in blackness, sweaty. Face in your pillow, heart accelerated enough to pull you out of a dead sleep. The room is quiet. The floor fan hums, radiates a gentle breeze but it never quite reaches the sweat spots in your sheets. So you sit up and locate yourself. In a brain fog, you remember you’re in your room. The same room you’ve shared for years.

Yoongi stills beside you with an arm tucked under the pillow and his back facing you. His outline is enough in the LED of the alarm clock. It reads 3:30AM. You shouldn’t but you reach across the bed, feel him over the sheets in what starts as a gentle touch, but then you nudge him awake.

He gives, rouses in spite of his own sleep deprivation. “Baby?”

“No.” You say calmly. “I had that dream again.”

Yoongi fights the urge to retain sleep for as long as possible, savoring what little hour you have for sleeping when the baby isn’t being tended to. He shifts at the waist, faces you, watches as you sit upright beside him. Disheveled in your own disorientation. But all you know at this hour is horror. Maybe hormones, sleep deprivation making you see obscure visions and feel a harrowing need for companionship even when you’re asleep. The doctors never said anything about nightmares.

“Come here.” Yoongi’s uncertain of remaining solutions so he opens his arms, lets you sink into them without hesitation. He compromises sleep and personal space. But when he holds you, it’s tight. Lively. Nothing like those dreams made you feel. His arms don’t bandage you but they sink away the desolate visions in your dreams, make them feel like old memories and not fresh reminders.

You can’t sleep, body still shaken. Your brain wants it, craves it, knows this is your last chance for good shut-eye before the baby wakes up down the hall and you’re thrown headfirst into 48 hour days. You watch the dark of the room. As if there’s something lurking. But you don’t dream of demons or shadows. You dream of death, longing, pain, and fear.

“We were scaling a building and it caught fire.” You narrate. “I don’t know why. But the baby was there and they saved him, but they didn’t get to you. The rest of it was me trying to convince them you were still alive, but they wouldn’t go back in. The building fell.”

“Scaling a building, huh?”

“What, you don’t do that in your spare time?” You lighten the mood in soft words.

Beneath your head, Yoongi’s chest moves with his snort. “Can’t say I do.”

“I don’t like those dreams. I don’t like my brain playing tricks on me and making me question what it’d be like if you were gone.”

“You gotta stop going on reddit before bed. And I’m not going anywhere.” With that promise he squeezes with the arm tucked under your shoulders and you feel his kiss in your sweaty hair. He’s tired, too tired to give you the reassurance but he tries. “Nobody’s dying, and the baby is fine.”

You watch the darkness turn foggy with the sleep in your eyes. Too afraid to close them. “I never have dreams about losing the baby. Only you.”

“You’re not gonna lose either one of us.”

You don’t know if he’s lying. Can’t see into the future to disprove it. So you savor what he says for now, and you know it’ll be the quiet seconds like this that you think back on when you yearn to feel the mold of your husband’s body so lovingly and warm to comfort under the fire of bad sleep.

Yoongi aches to keep talking. He does anyway. “You okay?”

You nod. “Better, now that you’re here.”

“Good. I don’t want you thinking of that sad shit.” He won’t say it but it’s because he’d rather be asleep. Hates when you wake him up in the dead of night for mundane comfort when he’s right here, and when he gets enough of that from his own newborn.

“I can’t help it.” You whine.

“Think of the good stuff. Not fires and burning buildings.” He kisses you again in the same spot.

You wish you could. How you wish you could turn off those dreams, close off the black part of your brain that conjures these things to life. “I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have you here.” And you mean that. Both in this moment and in those every little day to day seconds between exhaustion and stress.

“You don’t have to think about it, because I’m not going anywhere.” He shifts, cradles you tighter. “I won’t break that promise, no matter what.”
