I think it works in a lot of ways. (Including the two of them being my favorites in their respective medias)

Kanaya would totally be the one who would come up with the plan to shatter “Pink” Diamond (Sky diamond? Blue diamond? Purple diamond?) to stop it all at the source. She’d also definitely have a strong opinion about a revolution, hell, her ancestor practically started a religion about not following social norms set in place by a space dictator. She feels strongly for her friends and would do anything to keep them safe, especially if it meant making weapons for them. (She still is strong for fashion, but it’s more replaced with useful things to aid in the war, like armor) Also Bismuth is rainbow themed and Kanaya is a rainbow drinker ALSO also it works due to Pearl being Rose in this AU. Rosemary is STILL HAPPENING.💜💚

In this gemstuck, Dave is a rare sapphire that has grown bored of his fate and future.

(He does not need to be accompanied by guards as he is skilled enough with a sword.)

Lying about his vision to Green Diamond, he claims he will be shattered due to complications of the rebels. Instead, he disappears during the fighting, running into Rose Quartz herself (John as Pink Diamond and June as Rose) and she clearly sees he is deserting, decides to let him leave.

Dave is free from the diamonds, and for a short period, he is free to do whatever he wants. The issue is that everything is just as obvious as before. That was the case until he ran into a off colored Ruby who was hiding on earth after hitching a ride in a colonial ship thanks to the help of his friends. Karkat was constantly hiding his gem, and pretending to be some sort of Quartz. He was unpredictable. He was loud and uncaring of Dave’s rank. And things like this added up and they fell in love.

And to answer your question, (I’ve been looking forward to answering this actually!!) because Garnet is such a major character in the show, making an entirely new character just seems like a wasted opportunity. Also this character works so well for a mash of Dave and Karkat’s personalities
