Being an unmated omega sucked.

It's not the dreamy situation everyone thinks it is. You're not sought after and constantly asked out, there's nothing great about it. It's either chuckles and whispering jokes to friends, or horny newly-presented alphas who think it's their chance.

And the emotions are constantly all over the place as well.

Without a mate, as an omega, you naturally constantly feel.. Lost. Like you forgot your wait at home or suddenly notice your phone is not in your picket anymore. That feeling of dread that makes your stomach drop and hands shaky. It's always there.

Except at home.

For the rare occasion of an older omega like you, social isolation is the main reason they end up in the situation of being unmated at such an age. Normally, Omegas present at the age of 16, and typically mate soon after.

But putting boring facts aside, it's not always this bad.

You've got your ways to somehow live your life regularly; you stay low, away from any attention, and carry things around to help you cope with the lack of a partner who'd provide emotional stability in most situations. You're a little shadow moving in the background- never seen, rarely ever noticed at all. You got a comfort blanket drenched in your scent, and it helps to clear your mind when it becomes overwhelming.

Only that right now, it's gone.

And you have no idea where it is- where it could be. You run around the area, visiting every room you've been in, before you finally let yourself sit in a corner facing the wall, desperate to calm down. You'll find it.

You have to.

"is that new?" J-Hope asks as he watches Jimin on the couch, reading the setup list with a warm brown blanket over his shoulders. "it's really soft-" he starts, but joins hand snaps out to gently but sternly remove his packmate's hand from it.

"It's- yeah." he says, unsure why he's so protective of it. It smells absolutely amazing, that's for sure- the clean and gentle scent filling his mind and making him almost sleepy. He's oddly happy and calm now, a contrast to his typically rather fiery temper. He's never violent or anything- but as an alpha, and especially an unmated one, he does face issues every day. His mood can sometimes change within seconds, and while he's not as bad as Jungkook used to be, it's still something everyone around him is aware of. He's also needy for physical contact and always has this odd feeling of needing to prove his worth- even if it's just friendly competition. All of this ses to be put on hold however as soon as that blanket laid over his body.

So it's noticeable how at ease he is now.

However, it all changes again when he goes to practice choreography, leaving the blanket folded neatly on the couch, just to return and have it gone. "where's that blanket I put here?" he asks, brows furrowed and temper returning a little as staff smiles.

"oh- someone took it I think when you were mid-practice. I couldn't see who though." she mumbles, before returning to her task of cleaning up everything for today.

Jimin isnt satisfied with that answer.

He's basically on the hunt for that brown piece of fabric now, scent of it an invisible trail he follows around. It's a bit confusing, because the scent seems to go in and out of rooms throughout the entire level of the company building- before he opens a door to check, and finds something entirely else.

You, sitting in the corner facing the wall, counting quietly to yourself.

It's then that another staff member walks in behind Jimin, holding the familiar object and effectively snapping you both out of ut simultaneously. "my blanket!" you both say at the same time, before meeting each other's gazes-

And suddenly you both know: you're screwed.

She’s right.

You’ve never really seen Jungkook very far from the beaches or shores- he’s always around there, even has his home close to the waters. It doesn’t matter that he’s your friend, it is strange that he never talks, never so much as chuckles, never utters a sound towards you, or anyone else for that matter. You believed that maybe he was just very closed off after living alone for so long, that maybe he has his reasons, and you still believe that- but what might those reasons actually be?

A hand on your arm catches your attention, his eyes looking at your face to find a hint of what you might be thinking. When he can’t seem to find the answer he’s looking for his head tilts a little in question, jewelry on his ear moving like pendulums meant to hypnotize.

You can’t help but realize just how.. striking his features are. He is painfully beautiful to look at if you pay just a little bit of attention to it- from his rather tall build or the shape of his body to the soft curves of his cupid’s bow- beauty mark placed perfectly in the middle underneath his bottom lip.

Suddenly, you feel uneasy, and he visibly notices, face morphing into both worry and confusion.

He never speaks, and yet you’ve learned to read him by just his actions and expressions and the way his body sometimes moves. But is that really enough to consider you two friends? You know almost nothing about him, other than the fact that he is mute, that he doesn’t struggle with money, that he loves the sea and that he enjoys your company a lot.

“Jungkook..” you say, and he nods, encouraging you to speak to him because he wants to know what just happened to cause you to become uncomfortable. “…we’re friends, right?” You ask, and he again nods, more eagerly so, turning his entire body towards you on the couch to appear more open and inviting. Of course you’re friends to him.

If the world allowed it, you’d even be more if he was to be asked.

“And friends.. they don’t keep secrets from one another.” You continue, and it’s then that he swallows, that his eyes suddenly break contact, instead focusing on the tip of your nose to just appear as if he’s still looking at you just the same. But you know he’s not- you know by the way he blinks more often, how his lips twitch, how his hand rubs his leg for a second too long.

He’s nervous. He’s keeping a secret, just like the lady at the beach said.

“What aren’t you telling me?” You ask, and at that, he becomes more visibly distressed, fully turning his face from you as if the answer to his predicament could be found somewhere around his home. He wants to tell you, wants to talk to you, but he also loves you.

And he knows, one word spoken past his lips, and this selfish dream will end in horror.

One word, and you’ll die.

But without it, you might leave him all the same.

“I’m pretty sure they’ll get along great.” Jungkook smiles. “Of course I’ll have to slowly familiarize the two- but Custard is very sweet, she’s just sometimes a bit moody.” He explains to you, who watches the other shark in the tank with him as he’s being fed by a caretaker.

“I heard they’re a.. popular pet.” You mention, and Jungkook nods.

“Yeah! I initially wanted a lemon shark first, but then things changed, and I got custard first.” He shrugs. “Which I think might have been a good thing, considering that lemon sharks are said to get jealous easily if not properly socialized. It’s easier to introduce them to an already established shark than have them first and get them comfortable with a new one.” The alien explains, watching his new pet swim around.

“You know a lot about them.” You say, and he chuckles a bit bashful.

“I uh- not really. I just.. wanted to know what I’d be getting myself into. A pet is a big responsibility. “ He explains to you, and you nod.

“I swam with lemon sharks before.” You mention. “they’re pretty cute, but.. a bit chaotic sometimes.” You giggle, remembering the time, and how overwhelmed you’d gotten as the sharks had began playfully fighting over attention of you and the other divers.

“So you’re a good swimmer?” He asks curiously, standing next to you in front of the gigantic tank that holds his chosen pet inside, the young shark swimming around for now, while he’s being prepared for the newer conditions soon to become his permanent home.

“..decent.” You laugh a bit uneasy. “I.. nowhere near, you know, your skills.” You say, and he laughs.

“Oh that’s- like comparing clams with mussels. It’s not the same- just looks similar. Like us!” He shrugs off. “I think you’re under-selling yourself. And even if you’re not a good swimmer- I could teach you!” He offers, making you look up from where you stand near the glass.

"I'm just.. still a bit scared." You admit. "You know, after all that happened. I don't think I could just.. forget that and just.." you sigh, and he gently bumps your shoulder.

"Hey.. no one's asking you to." He tells you. "It just might be a good chance to face your fears? And I'll always be right at your side. I have an underwater license after all!" He proudly reminds you, and you can't help but laugh.

“You really seem like you really want me to visit your planet.” You tease, though he clearly doesn’t take it as a joke- nodding with almost cute enthusiasm.

“Of course! You said you always wanted to- so why not do it while visiting a friend?” He proposes. “it’s safer than just going alone. You could get lost, or even hurt.” He tells you. “and you’d miss out on.. you know, the spots only locals know.” Jungkook says, before he looks as Noodle swims closer again to inspect something floating around.

“I mean, you’re right..” you mumble, watching the shark move around. “…but I don’t know. I don’t think I could.. really.. I’m still just human.” You tell him, and he nods.

“I’m aware.” He responds. “and my planet has already made many adjustments to accommodate humans in many areas. You seem to forget that my kind has been.. mixing with humans for a long time by now. “ He chuckles. “means we had to evolve too, and change some of our architecture and stuff to adapt to those changes.” He says.

He’s right. And, in a way, he’s a living example of that change- with his honestly surprisingly human appearance, minus the height difference, and the hardly visible stripes of his skin.

“so, if you’d like, I’d happily house you for your vacation on my planet.” He grins. “and we can see just how well you swim.” He teases, leaning down a bit towards you before you both leave the large hall containing the tank for his new pet-

And you feel like this won’t just be a vacation at all, considering that he’s made it clear that he’s found interest in you past just simply being friends.

And in a way, you don’t mind that one bit.
