@chub-deer sent this ask to my raritwi blog but I thought it would be better to answer it here. I can’t really give a full walk through but here are some pro tips: -Move that hue slider around. Even if you only adjust it by a little bit just get comfortable moving it around frequently  -Ditch your sketch as soon as you can. Like, as soon as you can tell where all the parts are without your sketch, leave it. It’s okay to turn it back on every now and then if you need it but it usually gets in the way of you seeing what your painting looks like. -If your painting is looking too light or too dark you can always use the magic of digital art to save you, just move a exposure/colour depth/whatever slider around till it looks right again -Learn to render simple shapes like cubes and spheres on their own if your having trouble with painting a character. Also if you’re having trouble figuring out how light should hit them, cel shading is a good thing to practice -Don’t export paintings as gifs. Seriously this thing looks like trash and is making me angry as I type -Don’t be afraid to paint over stuff you’ve already put time into if you don’t think it’s working out -Stay hydrated this is kinda a broad overview of what I’m doing? idk lemme know if there are more specific things you want me to cover

shading colour tips

hey yall its me the Art Mom™ to help you shade pretty

rule 1: DO NOT SHADE WITH BLACK. EVER. IT NEVER LOOKS GOOD.

red- shade with a slightly darker shade of purple

orange- slightly darker and more saturated shade of red

yellow- i think like..a peach could work but make it a really light peach

green- shade with darker and less saturated shade of blue or teal

blue- shade with purple

purple- a shade thats darker than the purple you’re using and maybe a little pink (MAYBE blue)

pink- darker shade of red

white- a really light lavender or blue..or i guess any really light colour??

black- okay listen dont use pure black to colour anything unless you want to leave it with flat colours because you cant really shade black lol

grey- a slightly darker shade of purple or blue (less saturated)

brown- slightly darker and less saturated shade of purple or red

aaaaand thats all i got lol. let me know if there is anything i should add to this list!!

not gonna lie if you are like me and suck at coming up with poses using vintage sewing patterns for inspirations is so helpful for interesting poses that still display the character in a seeable way here are some examples of my favorites

because they are literally drawn in a way to show off their outfit but still be interesting and not boring
