In The Country Where We Still Ask Ourselves Who Killed Marielle, And Have Not Brought Into Justice Any
In the country where we still ask ourselves who killed Marielle, and have not brought into justice any of the alleged conspirators, a country that fought a few years ago for justice for Amarildo, another black man tortured, murdered and dumped by the police, now we have João Alberto, who was murdered inside a supermarket for… being black.
He was only 40. He had 4 children. He was planning to marry. He had suffered an injury at work and did odd jobs to survive besides receiving a pension. He was saving money to buy a vehicle to transport food for companies and supplement his income. He was black.
He said he couldn’t breathe. He begged to breathe. He begged for help. No one did. His soon to be wife watched him die, not being able to stop the men from beating him. No one helped.
João Alberto was not stealing. He paid and was leaving the supermarket. They alleged that he started the fight, when in the video cameras of the supermarket only shows he was caught being dragged back inside beaten by two white men.
What made the men beat him to death? A joke he made, playfully. Apparently, only white people can make inoffensive jokes and get to still live in this country.
To my Brazilian followers: the reason I am writing this is English and not Portuguese is so this can reach out to more people outside this country. This needs to be known by other people, Brazil needs to recognize its racism. More people should know about this. Racism is still killing people all over the world and people need to be held accountable. It has been a long time coming, countries need to unite and discuss their problems with racism and come up with better legislation for this hate crime and to help end systemic racism, helping people of color that get stuck in poverty, marginalized because of their skin.
This story should not be national news. It should be international.
This is shameful and absurd. It is depressing. But it must no be ignored while we pretend things get better. It must be dealt with, people must be held accountable, justice should be done for so many people, not only those who come to the media. There are billions suffering right now because of racism and xenophobia.
