BRO IF YOUR COSPLAY GOT NOTICED BY TOMMY BOY HIMSELF, OFC WE WANT TO SEE IT! (not to say that we wouldn't want to see it if he didnt like it, its just that your thomas found me post is actually what made me find you lols)
thanksssss this whole thing has made me so fucking excited like????
anyways i just have tiktok videos bc well….i’m awful at using my cos insta so let’s start off with the one thomas commented on shall we?
adding to this real quick with some general ones as well as ones for unilateral deafness:
using a friend as a guide when in public situations. im usually more relaxed/comfortable when in public with friends and rely on them to be aware for me. i just pay attention to them for cues instead of trying to be aware of everything which causes hearing fatigue. meaning im staring intently at one person to fill me in on group conversations, train/bus announcements etc.
the inclusion of signs/hand movements in conversations at random intervals. not everyone that’s deaf/hoh is taught sign language but most know at least a few and being around other deaf people as a child meant that i was in the habit of gesturing or signing random words that i knew when talking in public spaces to make it even a bit easier to follow when taking to other hoh/deaf folks.
pulling people over to your better hearing side. regardless of whether you wear a hearing aid or not, it’s easier to be on the side with the less severe hearing loss or just a working ear in the cases of unilateral deafness. people forget a lot and i’ve been in the habit of literally walking over to the other side of a person or pulling them to the better side since i was a child
exaggeration in expressions of the upper face but not the mouth when talking. this happens more for people who have history with sign language because expressions count in way of interpretation of the language generally speaking. basically the upper part of your face might emote the same way as they do when signing but the mouth is simple and easy to lipread. most deaf people don’t exaggerate their mouth movements, i didn’t either but when i moved away from the deaf community that was in my previous area i picked up mouth movements as a part of my expressions when they weren’t before because i wasn’t around fellow deaf people
Hello! Thank you so much for your work and this amazing blog.
I have a question: are there any visual indicators to a person being deaf/Deaf/HoH beside hearing aids and/or using a sign language? Mostly asking for the visual storytelling purposes - I wonder if there are any ways to visually hint at a character status as a deaf/Deaf/HoH person. Maybe some popular home assistive devices, or common little quirks/habits in regards of how a person carries themselves? I'm wondering if there are any telltale signs that hearing people often miss but that are obvious to other deaf/Deaf/HoH people. Something that makes you go like "oh, I do this thing too all the time!" when you see it.
Hello,
visual? Hm... Well, deaf people tend to turn their heads more, since they need to check their surroundings with eyes. They tend to place more importance of eye contact and see lack of eye contact as end of conversation. Instead of calling for someone, deaf people pat on the shoulder or wave to get attention.
Devices - vibrating watches, light based alarm clocks and doorbells.
People born deaf often have so called "deaf accent".
Lot of Deaf people make loud noises while signing, they really aren't silent at all.
Hope this helped,
Mod T
Made this for a Palestinian mutual of mine on Twitter who lives in Gaza rn. She love Gojo and sunflowers 🌻
She's been documenting her day to day life there and it's been both enlightening and utterly depressing to witness. Please go read her tweets if you can 🙏
