So, I’m curious. How do y’all interpret the relationship between Frodo and Sam? I personally think that defining them as just friends or just lovers trivializes a bond which can’t even be described because I wouldn’t even find the words to describe something so special. But, what do you think? Very few people ask this question directly so I’ll do it
Am I the only one who, the first time I watched Lord of the Rings, didn’t cry for the boat scene but then bursted into tears at “Sam…I’m glad you’re with me”? Just to know
Why nobody talks about this scene? Frodo literally told him to mind his fucking business. Go there babe!
@frodo-cinnamonroll You explained it very well. Frodo in the end resisted the Ring, he managed to not throw himself into Mount Doom like Gollum, also in this stands his strength because no one could have done it. Also Lady Galadriel says that if he he can’t succeed in destroying the Ring no one will. He is the only one who had the power to do it but probably the majority of people on the fandom are to afraid to admit it. Actually in the books Frodo is very afraid in the beginning and he wishes Gandalf could find someone else to carry the Ring. But then even after he almost die for the Ring he says that he will take it to Mordor.
As a LOTR fan I’m so tired of reading things such as: “What would Frodo have done without Aragorn or without Sam and so on for other characters?”. But do you ever wonder what all the other characters would have done without Frodo? He was the only one who had the courage to carry the Ring. In general I saw really few people who just give credit to what Frodo did. All the members of the company are important in the story and they should all be appreciated for what they have done without always making comparisons. I don’t know if I’m the only one who thinks this. Lemme know🥰
This is so beautiful. I think we can see this difference in the scene of the Tower of Cirith Ungol when Frodo doesn’t let Sam take the Ring even if he is exhausted because he knows the Ring will destroy Sam like it is doing with him and he would rather the Ring to destroy all of him than to destroy Sam. Frodo does an enormous sacrifice. He decides to carry the Ring and this way he protects all the other characters but he does this sacrifice especially for Sam, who he loves sooo deeply (platonically or not. Everyone can interpret it how they want). For this reason I’m tired of people who say that the love came only from Sam’s part. This people probably don’t have the sensibility to understand what you explained about Frodo’s love for Sam, so thank you for expressing it. Btw I’m crying.
I really can’t get over the sheer genius of Tolkien’s contrast between possessive love and selfless love in LOTR.
There is an inverse parallel between Gollum’s love for his “precious,” the Ring, and Frodo’s love for Sam whom you could argue is his own “precious,” the dearest thing in the world to him.
Gollum’s “love” for his Precious is selfish, a desire to possess and control it, and the Ring tempts Frodo into feeling this type of “love” for it as well.
On the other hand, amidst the darkness and temptation, Frodo develops a love for Sam that is the opposite: a pure desire for Sam’s happiness, a selfless love tied to sacrifice.
Gollum can never let the Ring go because he only feels selfish, possessive love for it, and that ultimately leads to his demise.
Frodo, despite his love and need for Sam, eventually lets Sam go - allowing him to marry Rosie, have a family, and build the happy peaceful life in the Shire that he wanted - because his love for Sam is selfless and pure, and this leads to Frodo’s salvation as he is able to sail away with the Elves and leave Sam in good hands.
Frodo’s character arc is complete when he learns what Gollum never learned about real, true love: it’s not about possession, but about sacrifice.
And they each face the consequences of their respective loves.
In the end, Gollum’s reward for his possessive love is abandonment, as the Ring remains on the surface of the lava while he melts away.
Whereas Frodo’s reward for his sacrifice is an eternal reunion with his soulmate, as Sam sails West and comes back to him.
