TED TALKS IN DIFFERENT LANGAUGES

TED TALKS IN DIFFERENT LANGAUGES

I was watching TED talks, as you do, and thought ha I wonder how many languages they have and I stumbled across this language heaven! They have over 100 languages and subtitles are available in various languages which is honestly terrific! I think the scope and depth of topics offered by TED talks could be a great way to broaden your vocabulary in areas which you wouldn’t otherwise be able to particularly for intermediate and advanced learners. Anyway happy watching and learning! (Links down below, click read-more link.)

Things You Should NEVER Say to a Translator (written by a Translation student)

Things You Should NEVER Say To A Translator (written By A Translation Student)

1. “Do you actually live from translation?” ok, it’s not bad if you say this to a translator, but depending on how you say it, it can sound rude, of course it depends on the person. Yes, there are people who live of translation, so don’t just go around and do translations without adequate qualification for a cheaper price, you’re ruining the market (yes I’ve seen people doing that already).

2. “Oh, professional translators are unemployed because now we have Google Translator and we don’t need people to do that” no, professional translators are unemployed because of what I said above, also try using Google Translator while doing business and see if you can avoid misunderstandings or chaos, good luck with that.

3. “Hey, I know this language very well, I could do some translations to earn some money” this is a myth that NEEDS to go away. Before I had started to study translation at university I also had this mentality, it’s totally FAKE. Translating is not just knowing about the language, is knowing and mastering NOT ONLY the language but also the cultural aspects, how the society in a certain country works, how they think, what’s rude, what’s polite, technical terms, basic aspects of almost every field of study, etc., and you need to solve translation problems often related to cultural aspects that ARE NOT easy to solve believe me.

4. “Translating is easy” I hate to say it to you, but it’s not. Just because we know the language, that doesn’t mean we just can translate things from or to that language in a blink of an eye. We often have to suppress part of the meaning of the text in order to make it understandable in the target language, and by the time that happens you can be sure that the translator already has a headache and probably spent HOURS thinking about that ONE word. It’s not easy people. I love translating, but it can be like psychological torture sometimes.

5. “It’s just translating, can’t you do it faster” I’ve seen people often complain about how that new episode was already released in the original country and NEVER seems to come to their country. Guys, do you know how much time you need to translate a text? Now imagine the time you need to put subtitles on a video, it’ll be even more! And I get it, translators have to be fast, we’re taught that, we practice to be faster, but we can’t be THAT fast. We can’t take quality away from the translation just to be faster!

6. “Can you translate this for me? Oh but I can’t pay that much/it’s just a translation, why do you take so much?” well, yeah, maybe I can, but yes you have to pay that much, you know that? Have you guys seen those posts artists make about this issue? Sometimes they even have screenshots of people trying to get their services for less or even nothing! Well I believe that translators are not asked to make translations completely for free (at least I hope not) but they are asked to make cheaper translations. People need to understand that we can’t do that, as it would harm us and our translator colleagues. I’m going to my third and last year of college and I’m not going to take so little when I start working, I can’t, look at the money and time I spent studying this! My degree is as valuable as the other degrees, so respect translators please!

Please bear in mind that this is just my perspective and that I’m still a student, so I’m not really talking by my own experience but from what I see people doing and just giving my PERSONAL opinion about it as a future translator.

Edit: some translators here are actually saying they are asked to translate FOR FREE omg don’t ask for that! If you ask someone to do their job for free you’re just an asshole!
