There wasn’t much that you could control in your life.

You had no control over the fact that you were born a girl. Or that you were born into a family that tasted fluctuating fortunes as often as there are turbulent waves in the sea. Or that as a girl, you were a disappointment to everyone already.

Your mother was disappointed when you inherited neither her looks nor her tastes, despite her rigorous attempts to shape you, to make up for the fact that you weren’t the boy and heir your father craved. You had been her last ditch attempt at a child after a series of miscarriages, and their only child to live past infancy.

Your father’s swings of fortune brought him into frequent contact with both businessmen in steel towers and the underbellies of the Korean peninsula. It was at some of these gatherings in your early teens that it dawned on you just how your father saw you - a prize cash cow to be sold to a great bidder.

You craved some normalcy that you could only witness through a TV screen or books - being able to go to a school and a cram school, enjoy studying with your friends, dress up, fangirl over your favourite stars, date, get scolded for your homework, confide in a teacher, find a hobby… everything that was stubbornly out of reach for you. You grew up holed up in a secluded and heavily guarded farm house in the countryside of Gyeonggi, with the house help and the security changing often, and your parents showing up when convenient which was another word for - rarely. Your mother chose to stay in Seoul with your father to “help him with business”, and here you were.
