Domeric looked at his sister as she returned to the Dreadfort from the long visit she’d been encouraged to go on to their aunt in Barrowton. Father had sent her when Domeric had first started to show signs of falling ill. When it was an illness that had taken the late Lady Bethany, their mother, Domeric had feared that he would get his sister just as sick. That was before he knew why he had fallen ill, before he knew what had really caused him to be so deathly ill that he had nearly passed away. Poison.

He was still paler than when he had last seen Morgan, and he could not help but wonder how much Father had shared with her of what had happened. Had he told her about the bastard? Had he told her that Domeric had been poisoned when he had visited the bastard? Did she know how close her brother had come to death? “Sister, welcome home.”

❝ This is your chance. ❞ Rickard had given a tremendous opportunity to his son. He had placed his trust in Torhhen and left him to rule their House’s castle and lands. And yet it was perceived as a punishment and it paled in comparison to the promises of war. Alys did not understand how her brother could not see the chance that he was offered. He was not the heir and unless he married well, he would never rule. He could prove his valour at home and did not need a sword for that particular task.

❝ Father was smart. In war sons die. ❞ Her voice broke as she thought about Harry, Edd and Daryn. They all left and the young lady understood that they might not come back. ❝ He perhaps saved your life. ❞ And also insured that Karhold would not fall into the wrongs hands. Alys would have been heir but she was destined to leave for Hornwood. She would give Daryn children and they would carry his name not hers. The main branch would die.

❝ I believe a time will come in your lifetime when you can win glories in war. For now you must stay with me and protect your sister and home. Is that so terrible ? ❞

Torrhen knew that Alys was right, that there was a reason that their father had left him in charge of Karhold. It was not smart to take all your heirs into battle, but he was still unhappy that it was him. He wasn’t trained to be a lord of an entire vast holding, Harrion was. And who would keep Daryn from doing something stupid that would leave him unable to return to marry Alys? He hated that he had been left behind, but Alys was right. Someone had to stay and make sure that she was safe. Wildlings had been seen in Last Hearth again, and their uncles... ❝ I still wish that I was marching with them. ❞

Torrhen clenches his jaw and takes in a sharp breath, wanting to scream at the world that he did not want the responsibility. He felt like he was drowning, lost beyond all belief and in well over his head.  ❝ Alys, I don’t know how to run a household, let alone one this large. It would have been better if he had left Harrion or Edd. If he has saved my life and sacrificed theirs, then it is hardly fair to the people of Karhold. ❞ He wanted nothing more for his brothers to return whole, now.

❝ I need help if I am going to do this... Will you help me? ❞

Robb had not expected to run into Jeyne when he had turned the corner, lost in his thoughts at the fact he was about to learn just how to be a lord without Father being dead. He supposed that it was good that he was getting the experience, and he would have Mother to help him, but knowing that his sisters and Bran would not be there either... It was still odd. His mind had certainly been elsewhere, he supposed that was likely why he had not heard Jeyne earlier. “Sorry, Jeyne. My mind was elsewhere...”

Ned‌:

@neithergodsnormen said “ I’m not leaving you here. ” - hurt meme, Howland for Ned

Ned reached up cupping Howland’s face in his hand. He still couldn’t believe the other man was hear. It had been years since he’d seen Howland. Years ago but once again Howland had come to him in his time of need. If nothing else he was glad that he would get to see his good friend one last time.

“Howland. You saved my life once.” Ned said wanting to pull the man down on to him, so they might lay curled together like they had years and years ago. But he couldn’t, physically he was too weak to pull Howland anywhere. “My daughters, their lives need saving, my son will be needing help, Jon-”

It had dampened the blow, knowing Howland knew. Knowing, even years after he’d said good bye to his most dear friend, that he did not carry the burden of Jon’s secret alone. That somewhere in the Neck Howland was going about his life knowing what Ned knew. He did not carry the burden alone, and it was such a heavy one he felt bad that Howland helped shoulder it. But the gods did everything for a reason, it was not an accident that only two of them survived, that Howland, who would fade back into the marshes of the Neck, on a moving castle, was the one who knew of Jon.

“Someone must tell him.” He’d promised the boy they’d speak about Jon’s mother when they saw each other again, and now- now he would never see him again.

“You would have to carry me, I cannot walk, I don’t think I could even stand. How far would we get? I would not condemn you to death as well.” His hand fell from Howland’s face, he was not lying about being weak, the wound in his leg had festered, he’d not eaten since he’d been down here.

Howland’s heart was breaking and he pressed into Ned’s hand, his own going up to hold it there longer. He wished that he had come faster, wished that he had chosen to head south after Ned had crossed the Neck. Starks did not do well in the south, and Howland knew exactly what it had cost Ned the last time he had been so far from Winterfell.

The crannogman wanted nothing more than waters to wipe King’s Landing from the map once they were out of it, but seeing how Ned looked... Gods, he looked like he was half lost to Howland already. Tears began to fall and he had to take a moment so that his voice would not break immediately. “I sent Meera to get the girls out, your daughters will be safe as my heir will not fail me or you.”

Mention of Jon made him pause, reminded once more the reason he had to stay away for so long. If anything happened to Ned, he was suppose to let the boy know the truth and he knew that was a part of his duty, but now that it was closing in on a chance that time would come? He didn’t want it to be, he wanted to fight death itself, to kill every last one of the people who had put Ned in here and hold the other man until they died together. If Ned Stark died, then Howland knew that he might as well die also, for the world would no longer feel complete. He dare not say that to Ned, however, for fear of the other man’s reaction.

“You can, when I get you out of here. I am not giving up on you, gods damn it.” His voice finally cracks, his whole body shaking as he decides that he will fight the gods for this. He will go to the gates of the afterlife and drag Ned away from them if he had to. “I cannot let you die, Ned. Not all those years ago and not now. I can’t...”

Willas looks up at the sound of the Queen Mother’s voice. He stands as quickly as his leg allows him, using his cane to move faster than he usually would. The Tyrell heir had not entirely expected anyone to come into the gardens at this time of evening, but he supposed that he was not the other one who was up at this late hour. “Your Grace, I was just enjoying the sunset. It is a different view on this coast.”

He had heard from his father and grandmother that Tywin was seeking the chance to try and marry the lioness to him. His family was not too keen on her, though Willas was not so quick to dismiss the possibility. After all, if they could secure their connection to the Lannisters... and Cersei was still of childbearing age, no matter what Olenna had to say.

“Would you care to join me?” Willas asks with a smile and a gesture to indicate the nearby wine that he had been sipping for the last half hour as he watched the sky.

Robb was pacing around the rooms he had chosen to occupy in Riverrun when he heard Theon enter his room. Theon was his closest friend, the person that he trusted more than anyone else that had been in that room shouting the words ‘King in the North’ and he felt a small relief at the sight of him. It still felt as if he had a thousand giants sat upon his shoulders, unable to have time to keep grieving his father. No, he could not stop to grieve that loss until his sisters were safely back at Winterfell and Joffery was dead.

Grey WInd barely lifted his head as Robb broke from the line he had been pacing, the now king making his way to his best friend’s side. “Theon, thank you for coming to see me. Your presence is more relief from my mind than you could even imagine.” He had to find a way to make this war work, had to find a way to beat the most ruthless commander that had lived in half a century. A few battles were nothing, he needed to find a way to destroy Tywin and what better person to discuss ideas with than the son of the man who had smashed the Lannister fleet not even a decade ago.
