childhood dog, never mine

thinking about those cold mornings of some undefined time, somewhere between childhood and adolescence, and the hill over that catholic school to which i’ve left behind forever. a field separated from the park by the trainline, always the faint noise of metal against metal, singing as wheels collide with track. overgrown grass, neglected by human hands and lovingly nurtured by the soft rain of the winter, rain that burst the banks of the creek and left the ground marshy under the feet of the dog as we walked it. i never had a dog, but i could play pretend with my cousins dog- we were always the same age in human years, but in dog years she’s become an old woman, while i’m still the little girl that i was back then. her heart is getting slower, and he eyes seem to almost glaze as she looks at you, doleful. i wont be able to hold her leash anymore. in the winter, the biting cold through cotton tights, a swirling fog descending upon those brave enough to venture out, and in the spring a carpet of fragrant bluebells dance between the wizened trees, an endless repeating cycle that scares me, because i can’t hold its leash.
