The twist of her thin lips made the sneer into something more like a snarl, fierce and livid and disgusted all at once. Spitting out a glob of blood and mucus onto his boot, Anne wipes her mouth with the back of one hand, not bothering to stand from where she sits panting. Her left arm remains wrapped around her aching ribs, shirt still muddy from the dead fucker’s boot print.

“I had that under control, Ed.” The name fires past her lips like a bullet from a gun—something so despised as to be disposed of quickly, lest it prove snakelike and willing to bite back.

With spread legs dangling over either side of her hammock and a book open in her hands, Anne didn’t resemble herself in the least. Books were private moments stolen away from the crew—any crew, every crew—consumed in hidden or at least empty places and always with an air of mistrust. She would sit hunched, resisting the spell of a good story in favor of remaining alert to dangers nearby, safe until she let the book consume her attention entirely. Anne hasn’t read like that for months. She’s started to read just as she is now—comfortably, openly, and any time she isn’t engaged in more important duties.

That’s the effect Stede fucking Bonnet has had on her.

“Hurry it up or fuck off,” Anne announces as she flips the page, acknowledging the presence in the room without tearing her eyes away from the text. Her voice is devoid of malice, though edged with her seemingly inexhaustible store of irritability.

So I should probably reply but I’m mobile and haven’t been on this hellscape in a while so idk what that’ll fuck up.
