In the chaos and the smoke, Anne has two goals: reach the helm, and stay alive until the helm is reached. Simple enough. Leave it to the English to cock up a perfectly good plan. Her steel flashes in the light of the burning fire on deck, silver and red, indistinguishable from every other hand on her side. Her blade runs through a navyman and she has just enough time to pull it free before the next arsehole is knocking into her. Anne turns to face them, eyes flashing, split lip breaking open anew when she snarls. The helm’s a few yards away; almost to her goal. She just has to run down, or through, the last of the obstacles.

“Get the fuck outta my way afore we go careenin into the other ship!”

Kinda wanna write but I’m mobile today—work was EXHAUSTING and we test tomorrow so I know it’s not getting better for a bit lmao.

I’d like to share something very special to me with you all, so please don’t laugh. I wanna talk to you from a profession that takes a lot of shit and gets very little respect.

See, I’m a teacher. I teach middle school—drama and English, though luckily I’ve wiggled back out of core and into electives where I belong. It’s a hard job and it’s often thankless, especially at this level, and as a new teacher it feels like I’m drowning every third day. Did you know almost half of all teachers quit before the first five years are up? That’s how bad it can be out here. The last guy who had my position lasted 6 months.

This is all to say, the thanks, the warm-fuzzies, they’re few and far between. And if you’re like me, in a thankless profession or the same one…I want you to start saving notes. Pictured below is one of my “feel better letters,” the first one I ever got from a student whose smile I still remember even at a different school in a different district. This kiddo would come by every day after classes to chat with me and another teacher—only missed a day if they were sick. I keep this one pinned above my light board. I really hope that kid is kicking high school’s ass—they deserve to.

The ones you reach as a teacher—the ones who think enough to reach back, to offer you this kind of affirmation—and also subordinates and bosses in other jobs—it makes the thankless days a little more survivable when you have a “feel better letter” in close proximity. I cry every time I read it, but it helps me remember why I wanted to teach at all. And I think everyone needs that, sometimes.

I’ve had so much fun having you as a teacher this year! You’ve made my bad days better and made me smile + laugh, even when I would steal your candy ♥. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t crying while writing this lol. You are one of my favorite teachers and always will be. Even when we weren’t talking in your class, I love being there. I have so much fun doing the play as an actor and your AD (assistant director), so even though I’m going to high school I hope you don’t forget me as a student and as a person because I won’t forget you ♥.

"That en't the part I should'a been consulted on," Anne replies with a shrug, dragging her eyes away from the list of "distinguishing features" still bearing his name to scan the list of crimes instead. Robbery, murder, arson, general piracy, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. All things she's done, though it's missing the odd accusation here and there. She forces herself to joke on her own currently impotent rage, focusing instead on Hands' poster. It's not a bad likeness--far more accurate than hers, which feature someone who could be anyone with long hair and a long coat, a hat and a pistol in hand. His could actually be his, if you looked close.

"Which words don' ye know?" It isn't common knowledge that Anne is learned, but Hands is a man to be respected, one who can keep a secret and knows what it is to be loyal. She's no reason to hide at least her literacy from him. "I can explain 'em, if ye like."

"They're writing my history, and I think somebody should have asked me."

“Join the club, luv,” Izzy snorted, leaning back against the wall. He let his eyes rove over the wanted posters with lazy curiosity. Not a bad likeness, as far as those things went. Sometimes his tended to exaggerate his profile a bit, but he did like how they’d styled his hair. Perhaps he’d start wearing it that way, rakishly tousled over his forehead. He was due for a change. “I haven’t got a clue what some of these words mean, myself. What are they saying you’ve done?”
