Pit Lane - Charles Leclerc x Verstappen!reader

Charles Leclerc x verstappen!reader
Requested? Yes/No - hello 🫀Could I request one that reader is Max Verstappen sister and is dating Charles. She isn’t a driver but is always in the pits for them. She suffers from asthma and in one career she has a really bad attack thats ends with her fainting and in the hospital because she couldn’t breath. Maybe it could be because her inhaler is empty and she didn’t have the time to get more.Would love to see how her brother, boyfriend, dad, friends (the drivers) reacts to the news
Thank youuu 🫂💕
Warnings: Fluff, angst, swearing, mentions of accidents, Jos Verstappen if that counts…
Word Count: 6.2K

Max was as overprotective as they come so when it came to light that you were dating his childhood rival and rival on the track he wasn’t exactly pleased. You were having a family dinner at your Mum’s when she asked you to quickly grab her a fork, obliging you left the table and also your phone by your seat. You were sitting beside Max who saw your phone screen light up as you left. Glancing over he saw a certain someone had sent you a text.
Char <3: Enjoy spending time with your family mon amour, I’ll call you when you’re home x
Max quickly snatched your phone from its spot just as you walked back into the dining room to catch him. His face was flooded with anger at the text he’d just read, something you picked up on the second you walked back into the room. Your brows furrowed as you spoke.
“What?” His eyes met yours at the sudden sound of your voice. “Why do you have my phone?”
“Why is Leclerc texting you?” He asked in a bitter tone.
“Sorry?” You tried playing dumb but Max could always see through your lies.
“Don’t lie to me!” He spat, holding your phone up. “Why the fuck is he calling you ‘love’? Are you two -”
“Max now is not the time.” Your Mum cut him off, staring at the two of you. “y/n just sit down, come on let’s just eat. It’s rare I get the three of you here for dinner at the same time.”
Victoria gave you a look, she knew. When you were younger Max went to stay with your Dad so he could pursue his Formula 1 career whereas Victoria stayed with your Mum. You were the odd one out. Max and you were always close, since the day you were born he’d always looked after you, he did the same with Victoria but he was just that little bit more protective of you but he had a reason to be. Being only seven you ended up staying with your Mum until you turned eighteen when you were finally reunited with Max for good.
Max quickly learnt a few drivers had taken a liking to you, especially Charles and Pierre. You’d met Charles before when he and Max would kart together. As a kid Max hated Charles, always complaining that Charles kept trying to push him off the track but as the two grew older they learnt to put their bitterness aside. You knew deep down that Max and Charles still had that rivalry, especially as they were now competing to be World Champions.
Moving in with Max meant going to every single one of his races, which also meant seeing Charles every single week. Normally he would always be accompanied by Pierre Gasly, a man who would flirt with anyone that took a breath whereas Charles was more subtle. It started out with small talk and then he’d show up to the post-race celebrations, get you away from Max so you could have a conversation that wasn’t just ‘hey, how are you?’. Conversations at the club turned into sneaking around with one another in hotels and the rest is history.
Max was yet to know about you and Charles. The pair of you had kept your secret from him for eight months. It hurt to keep it away from him, he was your older brother and the one person in the family that you could actually tell everything to well, everything but this. You knew if Max found out he’d lose his shit and you knew he wasn’t the cleanest driver on the grid at times. Part of you worried that if he found out he’d pull off a stupid stunt on the track and land the two of them in the hospital so you kept it from him.
“I’m not sitting here and eating fucking potatoes when my sister clearly has something going on with Charles Leclerc!” Max screamed, standing up and shooting you a glare. “What is going on between you and Leclerc?”
“Max please just calm down -” Your Mum spoke.
“Calm down? She’s been lying to my face!” He took a deep breath. “How long?”
You didn’t want an argument but you knew it would come eventually. “Eight months -”
“Eight fucking months?” His words were bitter. “Eight fucking months and you didn’t think to tell me?”
“You’d lose your shit if you knew! You can be such an idiot on that track and I don’t want you pulling some pathetic stunt that gets both of you killed!” You spat back.
“It’s not me you have to worry about crashing, that prat can’t even finish a race!”
“Don’t you dare start insulting him, not when he’s only ever spoken good things about you in the media unlike some of those drivers on the grid!”
“Yeah now I know why! He only done it to please you!” He ran his hand through his hair. “I can’t believe my own sister would go around with the man who’s considered my rival, you might as well be dating Lewis Hamilton!”
“Max that’s enough!” Your Mum snapped. “Both of you!”
“So is that where you’ve been going when you tell me you’re going to y/b/f’s house for the weekend? You’ve been with him? All those nights you stayed out late and asked me not to wait up, you were with him, weren’t you?”
“Of course I was Max!” Tears and panic were filling your body at the sight of Max’s rage.
“Why him y/n?” His voice now turned to pain. “Anyone but a shitty driver on the grid.” He slumped back down in his chair as you spun on your heel and left the room, feeling yourself getting short of breath you pushed your mother's bedroom door open and sat on the edge of your bed, trying to calm your breathing but nothing would work. Reaching for your inhaler you were able to steady yourself, calming yourself to the point of not feeling short of breath.
“He’s such a dickhead.” The voice of your sister caught your attention. She gave you a warm smile as she sat beside you, noticing your inhaler in your hand. “You need to take it easy, stress makes your breathing worse and you know that.”
“Rather hard when your brother starts screaming at you like that.” You leaned your head on her shoulder, closing your eyes as she wrapped her arm around you.
“I know but you know Max, can’t control his emotions to save his life… thank god he was never born a woman, imagine if he had a period every month.” You smiled at her words, letting out a light laugh. “Don’t worry about him, Charles is a decent guy. Mum likes him and Dad has always said he’s a good driver which automatically means he respects him. It’s just Max you’ll have to work on.”
“And what do you think of him?” You looked up at her.
She shrugged with a small smirk on her face. “You think you could set me up with Pierre now you and Charles are together?”
You laughed at her words before speaking. “I think Max would kill us.”
“Maybe so but I don’t think Mum would let him.”
Victoria continued to calm you down, meanwhile, your Mum was giving Max a lecture, almost like he was a child.
“Did you need to do that?” She set the food aside and gave Max a glare.
“I don’t want her around him -”
“Max she’s twenty-one, not a child. She can make her own decisions.”
“I’ve seen how some of these drivers act, I don’t trust them.”
“Does Charles act like that?”
Max pondered on the thought. “No…”
“Then why are you so uptight about all of this?”
“Because he might be like that.”
“Then that’s her lesson to learn. I’ve met him far too many times and even I can tell you that he’s not like that. He clearly cares about her and he was raised to be a polite and smart lad. You know that.”
“I still don’t like it.”
“Doesn’t give you the right to yell at her like that. She’s clearly happy with him, don’t you want that for her?”
“Of course I do.” Max gave her a sad expression. “But I want her to be safe.”
“Max,” Your Mum took his hand into hers, smiling at him as she spoke. “I know you care for her especially as she was always there for you at your races and when I and your father split it was hard on you both but you know deep down she isn’t going anywhere. He won’t take her away from this family, she’s still your baby sister.”
Max knew she was right but it was still hard for him. He missed being around his family and all he wanted was for all of you to be as close to one another as possible but that would never happen. People move on, Victoria already had and that pained him knowing everyone was slowly growing apart. With your parents split he never got to have what most children did, he never got to have dinner with the family every night, he never got to go on family days out or even just stay inside and watch a film with one another. It was something so small but something he so desperately longed for.
When it was clear that Max wanted to be a racing driver he never got a day off. He always had to train and that meant leaving you, his Mum and Victoria. So when you made the decision to move in with him he was over the moon. His Mum visited more and you were by his side. He had his family back, maybe not how he wanted but it was enough for him but the thought of you moving away to be with Charles meant he wouldn’t see you, Victoria or his Mum as often. His head just swarmed itself with the memories of being left with his Dad at eleven, no Mum or sisters by his side.
Max didn’t sat anything else, he only nodded, knowing his Mum was right he got up and made his way towards her bedroom. Softly knocking on the door he waited for you or Victoria to give him the all-clear to enter. His heart ached at the sight of you clutching your inhaler, a clear sign he’d set your asthma off.
“Can I speak to y/n?” He directed his question to Victoria.
“If you don’t plan on screaming at her then I don’t see a problem with it.”
“I’m not.”
Victoria looked down at you, waiting for the nod of approval from you. A silent signal that you were happy to speak to Max. She lifted herself from the bed, glaring at her older brother before leaving the two of you to talk.
Max shuffled into the room, a glum expression on his face as he sat beside you. “Did you need to use it?” He pointed to the inhaler. You only nodded, making a surge of guilt fly through him. “I’m sorry I just… I just don’t want this family to fall apart -”
“And you think Charles Leclerc is going to make us fall apart?” You arched your brows at him.
“No, but it’ll play a part. You know all I ever want to do when I have free time is just relax with you, Mum and Victoria.”
“And Charles and I dating is going to suddenly stop that?”
He huffed in frustration as he tried to get his words out. “No, but it means I won’t see you as much anymore. It means it’ll be harder to get everyone round for dinner as you’ll always be out with him, Victoria is always travelling -”
“Max I’m not going to just get up and walk out of your life. Do you not think I feel the same way too? I never got to see you and Dad as much as I wanted to as a kid and now I see the pair of you pretty much every day. Yes if Charles and I move in together I won’t see you every day but I’ll still be at every single race. I’ll still be living in the same area as you. It’s not like he’s going to lock me away from ever seeing you again.”
“Are you happy with him?” Max suddenly looked down at you, changing the subject slightly.
“I am, Max.”
“And do you love him?”
“I do.”
“Does he love you?”
“He says he does, every single day so I bloody hope it’s true.” Max broke a small smile at your words, following Victoria's actions he wrapped his arm around you, pulling you into his side.
“Then I’ll allow it. Can’t promise I won’t start a fight or let the two of you hold hands around me but I’ll allow it.”
“Oh glad I’ve got the permission of my brother.” You smirked at him before breaking into a smile.
“Just wait till Dad finds out.”
“I plan to never tell him, he doesn’t need to know.”
“Yeah, good luck.” Max laughed knowing that if he reacted like that then Jos would hit the roof.
That all happened a few months ago. Jos did find out but thankfully Max was there to ease everything. He didn’t lose his shit as much as you had expected him to but that didn’t mean he liked the idea of his daughter dating a Formula 1 driver, especially one who drove for a rival team but Charles had managed to survive a dinner with your family which meant things were destined to last.
—
“I wish we could stay like this forever.” Charles hummed as his hand smoothed down your hair. You were laying on his chest as the sun from the outside world made your hotel room glow like gold. Today was the day of the French Grand Prix, a race Charles was hopeful about.
“Me too.” You replied, your hand tracing his chest before looking up at him. “How are you feeling about today?”
“Confident.” He replied, a small smile on his face. “I think I can win it today if I get a good start and we can actually get our strategy right then I can put some distance between us and Red Bull.” He looked down at you, his smile turning to a smirk. “Or you could tell Max to lay off me just this once.”
Laughing at his reply you let your head fall onto his chest before replying. “Not sure if that would work, he already isn’t your biggest fan.”
Charles moved his hand and used it to move your face to look at him again. “So? His sister is.” He leant down and took your lips into his. He’d never get bored of the feeling of having you in his arms with your lips on his. He let his tongue slide across your bottom lip as he spare hand went to your waist, pulling you onto his lap so you were now straddling him as the kiss deepened. He tugged on your bottom lip, loving the way you softly moaned at the sensation.
You pulled away from the kiss slightly as you felt his hands begin to trail up your thighs. “You have a race to get to.”
“We’ve got some time-”
“Hardly any.” You muttered against his lips.
“We've had less before and we made it work… besides…” He brushed your hair out of your face. “It’ll be my good luck charm.”
“I thought I was that.”
“You are, I just might need a little extra luck looking at the state of our strategy.” Laughing against his lips you melted into his touch as he leant up and flipped the two of you over. He ducked his head down and began to kiss your neck. Your eyes glanced over to the clock beside the bed.
He was right, you had time.
—
You watched as Charles took his helmet into his hands, looking down and smiling at the photo of you and him tucked inside the padding before meeting your soft y/e/c eyes. “You always look so worried when I’m about to get into the car.” He pouted at your expression. He always hated seeing you like this. The thought of having your brother and boyfriend taking part in one of the most dangerous sports in the world which was responsible for so many deaths caused your anxiety to spiral. Something Charles unfortunately knew all too well.
“Just be safe please.”
Charles walked towards you, setting his helmet aside he wrapped his arms around your waist, pulling you into his chest. “You know I will.” He pecked your lips. “I will always come back, I can promise you that.” His eyes scanned your face, he would never get bored of seeing how your eyes would look up at him with such love.
“You better.”
“I will.” This time the kiss felt different, it always did before a race. It was always a silent promise that he would come back to you, no matter what happened out there. “I’ll meet you at the garage when the race is over.”
You nodded, the two of you sharing one last kiss before he stepped away and put his helmet on. “Good luck Char.” You leant up to kiss the top of his helmet before you turned away to join your family at the Red Bull garage.
“y/n!” You turned back to the man dressed in red. Charles was jogging up to you, slipping his helmet off before pressing his lips onto yours once again. He cupped your jaw as he deepend the kiss, he smiled against your lips as he pulled back, missing the sweetness of your lips. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” You smiled back as you kissed him again, swiping your tongue on his bottom lip, teasing him after the antics of the morning. Charles wanted more but he couldn’t. Not yet anyway. The pair of you pulled back eventually. Charles blew you one last kiss as you left him. “Please be careful!”
“I will mon amour!” He called back, his head turning to see you walk away.
“You know,” A Spanish accent filled the air. “I can’t decide if you two make me want to be sick or if you two are just cute together,” Carlos smirked at Charles who was clearly smitten with the Verstappen girl.
“You sound like her brother.” He replied, glancing over his shoulder one last time only to see that you’d already gone to find your brother. No matter how long or how much you loved Charles you made one promise to yourself and that was to watch the race from the Red Bull garage. Max was still your brother and the one person who’d be there if things ever fell apart.
“Afternoon y/n.” Christain Horner welcomed you as you made your way through the groups of mechanics to find your family.
“Hello, Christian.” You smiled back at the man.
“Did you ask your boyfriend to have a shit start so we could get some pace on him?”
“Think you might struggle this time around, he seems pretty confident and Ferrari seem to have a set plan for this race.”
“Can always rely on you for insider information.” Max’s voice snatched your attention. He opened his arms for a hug, an action you quickly obliged with. “Wonder what he’d think if he found out you were telling us all their secrets!” He joked as the two of you shared a hug.
“What can I say? I clearly have a favourite.” You went along with his words although Max knew as much as you loved him and always showed your brother endless support that you would much rather see Charles win a World Championship than him.
“You should do, he’s your brother.” Jos quickly joined the conversation, pulling you away from your brother for a hug.
“Hello to you too Dad.” You hugged him back before Max spoke again.
“How’s he feeling? Confident?”
“As always.” You replied. “And you?”
“Easy win.” He winked before breaking into a small laugh. “It’ll be a challenge as always but if we get a good start, do our pitstops in a smart way then I can’t see why we can’t be on the podium.”
“I can’t see why you can’t finish in P1 today.” Your Dad joined in, making you and Max share a quick look.
As much as Jos cared for you and your sister he always seemed to have a different attitude towards Max. As you got older you began to understand he was living his dream through him. Jos wasn’t good enough for Formula 1 but Max was. He’d already won a Championship and was set to win many more in his career. The treatment your Dad gave to Max was beyond unfair but Max hadn’t known anything else. The pair of you would often talk about it but Max refused to ever admit that Jos was in the wrong, he just thought that was how a Dad was supposed to be.
“You’ve got Charles for competition so maybe aim for P2.” You quickly spoke, trying to brush off the harsh words of your father.
“Don’t think I can do it?” Max pretended to look offended. “My own sister turning against me for Charles Leclerc!” He placed his hand on his chest. “Maybe you should go watch the race with Ferarri.”
“Oh shut up.” You shoved him slightly as Max made his way to the car. “Be safe.”
“I’ll try.” He smiled as he grabbed his helmet, waving at you one last time as you and Jos joined Victoria to watch the race unfold.
Charles had started well. You had to try your best not to celebrate in front of the Red Bull mechanics and your family but your joy didn’t last. In the eighteenth lap just after Red Bull had completed an incredible pit stop your heart sank. The camera suddenly cut to someone in the wall and then your boyfriend's name was mentioned. You saw his number proudly against the car, you didn’t need a commentator to confirm your fears.
Charles didn’t move for a few seconds and in a fit of fear you threw your headphones off as you felt your heart race and your breathing increase which meant you missed his radio confirming that he was in fact okay. Your eyes fell onto the screen again and Charles was still not moving, the camera cut away, a sign that was never good in Formula 1.
Victoria picked up on your distress immediately. Growing up alongside you she always knew when an asthma attack was on the rise. Stress and panic always grew when you watched races, you knew you should stay away from the sport when your nerves were on the rise but you couldn’t do that to Max and Charles.
“y/n…” Victoria grabbed your forearm, pulling you away from the small crowd of people watching the race. “It's okay, he’s okay…”
“He didn’t move -”
“He’s probably in shock, he’ll be okay. It wasn’t a bad crash -”
“It doesn’t need to be.” Your voice was failing you as your chest started to ache. Victoria grabbed your bag from around your shoulder, sensing you needed your inhaler she pulled it out of your bag, handed it to you and directed your hand to mouth but when you pressed the silver button nothing happened. Hers and your eyes widened at the lack of sound indicating that the device had worked. “Shit… I forgot…”
Before every single race, Charles always asked you to check your inhaler and make sure it wasn’t running low. He couldn’t even begin to think of what would happen if something went wrong when he wasn’t around. He knew how important it was, especially if either you or Max got hurt or into a collision. He also always kept a spare on him just in case you needed it and you had left it behind. The only problem was Charles was climbing out of his crashed car with no inhaler on him.
Victoria knew she had to think fast or you would end up in serious trouble. She screamed for Jos who wasn’t paying much attention, too focused on the race until he saw his youngest daughter clutching her chest as she sunk to the floor. Forgetting that Max was now on his way to winning another race he called for help, alerting a steward of what was taking place. Within seconds the ambulance team was in the Red Bull garage attending to you.
Meanwhile, Charles was on the side of the track, screaming in frustration at his mistake. With his head in his hands, he sobbed his heart out. Through teary eyes, he looked down at his helmet and saw the photo of the two of you. He knew you’d be waiting for him when he got back, waiting to take the pain away and that was all he needed right now.
If only he knew.
“Mr Leclerc you need to go to the medical tent.” One of the safety managers called over to him as he stormed back to the garages. Anger was still running through his veins at what had happened.
“Fuck off I’m fine.” He took a deep breath as he walked into the garage.
“You may feel fine but you need to be checked over, it’s an FIA rule, please -”
Charles scanned the garage yet couldn’t find you. Despite always watching the races in the Red Bull garage you would always leave the second anything happened to him on the track. You would always be waiting at the Ferarri garage for him or you’d meet him at the medical tent if the team had been told that he was sent there. “Where’s y/n?” He ignored the man's pleas.
“She isn’t here.” A mechanic spoke. “Hasn’t turned up.”
Charles scrunched his face up in confusion. “She isn’t in my room?”
“We would have seen or heard her.” Another mechanic spoke. She hasn’t come here. Maybe she’s still at Red Bull.”
“But she always comes here.”
“Maybe she saw you get out and decided to stay and watch her brother win.” The mechanic turned his gaze to the television mounted on the wall. Charles followed his gaze to see Max Verstappen leading the race but it still didn’t make sense. You’d seen him crash a fair few times and saw him get out of the car safely yet you always came here, even if Max was winning.
Charles didn’t say anything as he left the Ferrari garage and headed down to the Red Bull garage. Your relationship was public so he knew if cameras were following him closely it wouldn't spark rumours that he was attempting to sign with Red Bull to escape Ferrari.
“Is y/n here?” He announced to no one in particular. A few mechanics and friends of Max and Checo looked around at one another, unsure whether they should tell Charles what had just happened. The brunette picked up on their uncertainty almost instantly. “What?”
Checo’s wife took her headphones off and gestured for Charles to follow her. He quickly followed the woman, his concern growing. Making sure the pair of them were away from prying ears she spoke. “She saw you crash and the panic got to her -”
“Has she just gone back to the hotel?” Charles quickly asked.
“She had an asthma attack and her inhaler was out. She’d forgotten to change it and they had to call the ambulance team. We’ve been told she’s all okay, she’s at the medical tent -” Charles didn’t need to hear the rest. He quickly turned on his heel and sprinted out of the garage and towards the medical tent, not caring that he probably shouldn’t have been running considering he’d just crashed into a wall.
—
“Is Charles okay?” You asked, propped up in bed whilst the medic team checked your heart rate. You were put on a ventilator, something you were used to after growing up with asthma. Victoria and Jos were by your side through the whole thing. Thankfully you started to breathe on your own after a while, the medics were running their last checks to make sure you didn’t need to be sent to a specialist.
“He got out of the car just fine. He was walking around after.” Your Dad held your hand as he sat beside the bed, his eyes glancing back and forth between you and the race.
“He’s okay y/n.” Victoria chimed in.
“He should have joined you in here for his own checks but I’ve been told he’s refused a medical check-up.” The paramedic tending to you reassured you. “That means he must be fine.”
You gave the woman a small smile, resting your head back and letting out a steady breath. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, Miss Verstappen.” She stepped back. “You’ll be fine but maybe this is a lesson to always carry an inhaler that works.”
“Charles always has one on him just in case.”
“No good when he’s in a wall.” Your Dad replied.
“Maybe we should start carrying a spare just in case,” Victoria spoke.
“Or maybe I should remember to get mine replaced.” You chimed in.
“That too but if Charles can carry one for you then I think we could too, just in case.”
Almost like he was summoned by the sound of his own name Charles darted into the room, still in his race suit his eyes fell on you. Suddenly all the anger and hurt from crashing out of the race disappeared and the only thing he could think of was you. “Ma belle fille…” Charles hurried himself over to you. Jos moved from your side allowing Charles to sit beside you. He took your hands into his, pressing small kisses into your skin. “What happened?”
“I fainted but I’m okay.” You ran your thumbs over the top of his hand. “It was just an asthma attack.”
“Love it’s not ‘just an asthma attack.” His eyes met yours. “It’s serious, you could have landed yourself in a lot of trouble, we were lucky you only landed yourself in here.”
“I know.” You looked down, slightly ashamed that you had caused all of this just because you forgot to get your inhaler replaced.
“Hey,” Charles moved his hand to tilt your head back up to face him before he planted a short yet meaningful kiss on your lips. “I’m just glad you’re okay, you nearly made me faint when I got back to the garage and saw you weren’t there.” He smiled.
“We’ll give you two some space.” Victoria pulled Jos out of the room. “I won’t tell Max what happened, I’ll let him bask in the glory first.” She winked before leaving the room with your Dad who looked displeased to leave you alone with Charles despite the two of you living together.
“Are you okay?” You turned the conversation back to him.
“Hmm…” He hummed back. “It was all my fault, I’m never going to be a World Champion if I can’t keep the lead of a race without fucking it all up.”
“One mistake doesn’t define your career Char.” Squeezing his hand you gave him a reassuring smile.
“Thank you.” He returned the smile. “It just feels as if I’m not set to win a Championship.”
“Why? Because you crashed the odd time? The world knows it’s not your fault, fans blame the team and they’re right in doing so. They ruined so many of your and Carlos’ races, races the pair of you could have easily won and gained more points than Max. The season isn’t over yet and if things don’t go to plan this season then you always have next season.”
He got up and leaned over to kiss the top of your head before placing a small light kiss on your lips before returning to his seat. “Thank you. I don’t deserve you.” He kissed your hand again, looking up at you with his eyes full of love. “I don’t even want to go out there and talk to the press.” He huffed, leaning his head on the bed as he changed the subject.
“You don’t have to.” Your hands started to play with his hair. “You can just stay here.”
“Oh, I plan on it.” He shut his eyes, taking a deep breath as he melted into your touch, finally feeling calm. “Although I’ll have to speak to them eventually.”
“I’m sure you can weave around it besides, just tell them what you told me.”
“Not sure that’s going to work on everyone, most fans don’t think I deserve to even be considered as a title contender.”
“Since when did you care about what others think?” You raised your brows at the man. “Char, you drive Formula 1 cars for a living and they spend their money to see you drive those cars, you really care about what some low-life fan who can’t even drive a normal car thinks?”
Charles raised his head from the bed and looked at you with a smile. “Such a way with words Verstappen.”
“I do try Leclerc.” You both leaned forward to one another when a sudden bang of a door opened.
Max was standing in the doorway alongside Daniel and Lando. When Daniel and Max were teammates you grew close to the Australian who would spend most of his time showing you his playlists on his phone and telling you the stories of his life. Daniel had been on adventures you only read about in books, you could listen to him all day. Lando and you grew close due to Max treating the boy like a younger brother. The two of you were also close in age which was an added bonus when it came to conversation. As Lando once said ‘sometimes these old men don’t understand us’.
“Fucking hell y/n are you okay?” Max shoved Charles out of his chair, not caring that Charles could have been hurt as he’d been involved in a crash. “What happened? What did they give you?”
“I’m fine Max.” You smiled at your brother. “It was my fault, I had an asthma attack but my inhaler was empty. I fainted but I’m okay -”
“You don’t sound it,” Daniel spoke up, making his way to the bed, not caring that Charles was now sitting on the floor after being pushed by his old teammate. “Here.” Daniel handed you one of his hoodies, making sure you were comfortable as you lay in bed.
“You know I have hoodies if you want them,” Charles announced from the floor, his face already fed up with Daniel's antics.
“I’ve got a few too,” Lando spoke, a smirk on his face. All three drivers received a glare from Max, a silent warning that if they continued he’d deal with them on the track. “But I’m sure you’re fine.” Lando quickly said, clearly scared of Max.
“Thank you, Lando.” You tried to suppress your laughter as you spoke again. “And you too Daniel.”
The Aussie helped you put the hoodie on, making sure you were warm and comfortable before laying back down. Whilst Daniel made sure you were comfortable Lando grabbed you a drink and left it on the side for when you were ready.
“Thought you would have gotten her all this Leclerc,” Max suggested, knowing his words would annoy him.
“I was too busy making out with her Verstappen.” Charles knew his words would annoy your brother.
“What did you say?” Max stood up, his actions quickly causing Charles to scramble to his feet.
“I’m just saying…” Charles smirked. “She tastes good -”
“That’s my sister you dickhead!” Max lunged at Charles but he missed, allowing Charles to sprint to Daniel, holding him and using him as a human shield but Max couldn’t care less. Lando used his brain and moved out of the way towards you, watching the whole scene unfold with a smile on his lips.
“It was a joke!” Charles screamed, trying to defend himself as he made a run for the door.
“Well…” Daniel looked over at you. “Least you don’t have to worry about your boyfriend being injured… from the car at least…”

The summer of 2021 was one the English would never forget. For the most part, the summer was full of happiness and memories but the night of the Euro final against Italy was one to forget. England fell at the last hurdle, cheated out of the win if you analyse the referee's decision but it was over now. You were there to witness everything. Growing up with Mason and Declan meant you were there to watch their happiest moments on the pitch and their heartbreaking moments.
You’d gone down the same route as they had, football. You were scouted by Celtic and quickly moved to Scotland, leaving the boys for several years. Thankfully the women's league started later than the men's so you were always able to travel back to England to support the two and they’d do the same at the end of the season.
Eventually, you left Celtic and moved back to England to join West Ham, much to Mason's disgust. Declan was enthusiastic, he always bragged to Mason that he got to spend more time with you, always telling him what you’d been up to during training and your free time but the truth was Mason already knew that. You’d been dating Mason behind Declan's back for about a year now.
It all started after the Euro final. Mason was heartbroken and wanted you by his side. You didn’t feel guilty about leaving Declan, he had Lauren by his side, Mason had no one like that. You sat on his bed, cupping his face as you wiped his tears away with your thumbs. Mason looked up at you through his glossy eyes, even when his heart was being ripped into a million pieces he couldn’t help but fall in love with you even more. He already lost the biggest game in his life he couldn’t lose much more. Mason leant forward and placed his lips onto yours, you kissed him back and the rest was history.
“How’re you feeling?” Mason ran his fingertips along your skin as you both lay in bed together. It was the morning of the women’s euro final. England was set to play Germany in a mere few hours, a game in which the men lost and the women had never won.
“Bit nervous.” You looked up at him through the sunlit hotel room.
“You’ll be fine, you’ve scored in every game so far.” He smirked. “Might as well be the female Messi.” A small laugh slipped from your lips as you laid your head down onto his bare chest, your hand reaching up to trace his tattoo.
“Maybe one day.”
“You’ve got the height for it.”
“Oh piss off I’m not that short!” You slapped his chest causing him to laugh and wrap his arms around you, keeping you close. He kissed your forehead as you fell silent. A small sigh fell from your lips, catching his attention. “What’s on your mind?”
“When are we gonna Dec?”
“Soon.”
“How soon?”
“In the next few weeks.”
“What about today?”
“Absolutely not.”
“Why not?”
“Because today is about you, not me and if he throws a fit saying shit like ‘it’ll ruin the friendship’ then that’ll ruin your day.”
“It’ll ruin my day not being able to celebrate with my boyfriend if we win.” You hit back at his words.
“You can celebrate with me.” He moved your head out of your face. “Behind closed doors when he’d not around.” Rolling your eyes you pushed yourself up from his grasp, getting out of bed and heading to the shower. Mason frowned at your actions, pouting like a child as you left him alone. “Don’t be in a mood with me!” He called out.
“I’m not!” You hissed back, turning the shower on before locking the bathroom door.
“Do I get to join?”
“Nope.”
“Why not?” He threw the covers off his bare body and made his way to the door, attempting to open it. “y/n lets not have an argument.”
“We aren’t having an argument.”
“You’re acting as if we are.”
“Your eyes deceive you Mount.”
“You only ever call me by my last name when you’re teasing me or when you’re pissed off and the door being locked is a big sign to me that you’re annoyed at me.”
“You know why.”
“Oh, so we are having an argument?”
“A disagreement Mason.”
“Look I want to tell him but we’ve kept it for so long… that’s what’ll hurt him…”
“And who’s idea was that?” Your tone turned sour at his excuses.
Mason knew you had a point. You wanted to tell Declan after a few months. That was the original agreement. Make sure things worked out first and if they didn’t you’d split and it would never be spoken about again and Declan would never have to know. Evidently, things didn’t turn out like that and Mason and you had already begun to look at properties to move into together, Declan would have to find out soon. Mason was the one who wanted to keep it from him, the lies just built up and it was getting too much. The pressure of the Euros was weighing on your shoulders and the constant lying to your best friend was getting too much.
You opened the bathroom door, your hair dripping wet as you wrapped a towel around your body. “We tell him tonight, I don’t care what the result is and if you won’t tell him then I’ll just tell him myself, without you.”
“You look really hot -”
“Stop trying to change the subject.” Glaring his way you pushed past him to gather your England kit, making sure you had everything in your bag for the game ahead.
“Just stating a point.” A smirk grew on his lips as he followed your movements. He came up behind you, hands on your hips, pulling your back into his chest. Kissing the side of your cheek he started to trail light kisses down your jaw and neck.
“Mase…”
“Hmm?”
“We need to tell him.”
Mason let out a heavy breath but didn’t stop his actions. “We will.” He gripped your hips tighter.
“When?”
“Tonight but if you lose we’ll tell him tomorrow, deal?”
“Deal.” You leaned your head back on his shoulder. “As much as I would love for this to continue I have to get to work.”
“I can be quick -”
“Don’t I know it.”
“Oi.” Mason spun you around so your eyes met his before he lightly pushed onto the bed. He hovered down so his lips ghosted yours. “You’ve never complained before.”
“To you…”
“You haven’t even won the match yet you’re already acting cocky.”
“Learnt from the best.” You pecked his lips lightly as he laid you down. “You might wanna hurry up if you want to do this…”
“You know I think this is why we lost the Euros…”
“Sorry?”
“I didn’t get a good luck shag before I played.” He smirked.
“You’ll get one for the World Cup.”
“I bloody better.” Mason smashed his lips into yours, his free hand coming up to remove the towel as he climbed up onto the bed. Needless to say, you were late for the first briefing of the day.
—
Mason and Declan sat alongside the rest of the England boys who came to support the lionesses. Both of them wore an England shirt with your name and number on the back, proudly displaying their pride for you. The first half hadn’t gone to plan, England had picked up two yellow cards and was yet to score a goal, then again on the brighter side, Germany was also yet to score.
Mason watched as you quickly stormed off to the changing rooms the moment the half-time whistle blew. The brunette turned to his best friend who was beckoning him to follow him out to the foyer for a drink.
He needed to tell him.
Mason followed him, nerves creeping up inside him and not just because of the game. “You alright?” Declan’s voice grabbed his attention.
“Yeah.” He gave him a light laugh, trying to play things off but Declan knew him too well. “Just nervous for the game that’s it, wanted them to be at least a goal up by now.”
“They’ll be fine, we know our y/n, she’ll score.” Declan grabbed a drink for him. “But I know that isn’t what you’re nervous about.” He stared straight at the Chelsea boy. “What’s wrong?”
Mason took a deep breath, sipping on his drink as he felt his heart pounding. “Before I tell you, promise me you won’t take it out on her. She wanted to tell you -” Mason didn’t even need to continue for Declan to put two and two together.
Huffing, Declan cut him off. “How long?”
“Dec -”
“How long Mase? How long have you kept this from me? You two are my best mates and yet you lied to me, how long?”
“Since we lost the Euros.”
“So a year then? You two lied for a year? Who else knew?”
“Only our families, I promise you Dec only they knew and not all of them know. My parents and hers do and that’s really it.” Declan didn’t say anything, prompting Mason to keep speaking. “She wanted to tell you but I didn’t. I was scared that you’d turn your back on us. We planned to keep it secret until we were certain it would work out between us but I got worried, not her. y/n wanted to tell you but I didn’t so if you want to blame and be pissed off at someone be annoyed at me.”
Once again Declan was silent, contemplating on what to say but the sudden cheer of the crowd caught their attention. The second half was starting. Without uttering a word Declan moved past his best friend, screaming your name with the crowd as he took his seat.
A defeated expression fell onto Mason’s face as he took his seat. He knew he’d done the right thing for you, maybe it was a bit late but things are always better delivered late than never but he couldn’t dwell on it too much now, you needed his support.
Thankfully for him, Toone scored allowing England to take the lead. Mason and Declan both roared at the goal but the feeling didn’t last long as minutes later Germany went and equalised. They watched as you let out a string of swears from your lips, throwing your head back in defeat, you and the rest of the nation really didn’t want to lose this game after the men's final.
The game ended up going into extra time and the nerves were getting to you all. It felt like the clock was moving slower with each second. No one wanted it to go to penalties. Declan spared a glance over to Mason who looked as if he was losing his mind. Not only was he riddled with fear of losing his best friend but also feared his girlfriend would lose this game like he did.
“Do you love her Mase?” Declan suddenly spoke.
“What?” He turned his attention away from the game. “Of course I love her, I wouldn’t still be with her if I didn’t. Dec I’d do anything for her -”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?” He looked hurt. “Mase we’ve been mates for years, not just me and you but y/n too.”
“She wanted to tell you -”
“But you didn’t so she kept it a secret for you.”
“Yes…”
“Break her heart and I’ll break your kneecaps when we play next.”
A sigh of relief left Mason’s lips, a small laugh fell from his mouth as he spoke. “Thank you and again I am so sorry.”
“Just don’t wait to tell me that you’re marrying her the day before you put a ring on her finger.”
“I won’t.”
“And don’t wait to tell me she’s pregant when she’s going into labour although that might be a little harder to hide.”
Mason laughed again. “I won’t, I promise.”
A sudden string of boos rang out from the crowd, grabbing their attention. Both boys looked over to Germany’s goal. You were on the floor, holding your arms out as the referee pointed to the penalty spot.
“That’s your girl Mase.”
“She’s given a penalty to us.”
“And you weren’t even looking when your girl was fouled,” Declan smirked over at Mason.
“She doesn’t know that.” Mason kept his attention on the game. “Who’s taking it?”
“Not trying to scare you Mase but y/n is stepping up to it.”
“What?” Despite being in the boxes, Mason stood up to get a better look, not like it would do much but now we could clearly see that you were standing opposite the goalkeeper with the ball in front of you. “Fucking hell…” He took a deep breath, his heart pounding in his chest. It wasn’t that Mason didn’t think you could do it, you were more than capable of taking a penalty. You’d scored most of the ones you’d taken but after the final, he’d been in he’d never want that guilt to fall to you if you missed.
The sound of the crowd filled your ears but you silenced them. That was one of the first things you’d learnt whilst being at Celtic. The crowd there was one you’d never heard before but Wembley was a different story. The entire nation was watching as the referee blew her whistle and you had to take the penalty. With a deep breath, you took one last look at the goal and ran up and kicked the ball. Aiming the ball in the top left-hand corner you watched as it hit the back of the net, slipping through the keeper's hands. In the last few minutes of extra time, you had scored and put England in the lead with minutes to spare.
The feeling was something you knew you would never feel again for a while. You ran to the crowd, screaming with happiness as they screamed back. Your teammates jumped on your back, ruffling up your hair and screaming alongside you. You looked up to the box where Mason and Declan were sitting and gave them a smile, although you couldn’t see them through the crowd you knew they were smiling down at you.
The whistle blew signalling the game was over. You and the rest of the girls fell to your knees, the tears streaming down your faces. It had finally come home. Mason and Declan made their way down the stairs and towards the pitch side with the rest of your families.
You and the girls were singing along to Sweet Caroline when you caught the eyes of Mason. He ran over, pulling you into his arms, picking you up as he spun you around. Not caring that a camera was right beside you he crashed his lips into yours, cupping your face as he tried his best to not get too carried away on national television.
“You’re the best in Europe.” He smiled.
“Maybe the world soon…” You pushed his brown hair out of his eyes, looking up at him with a soft smile. Your eyes fluttered over to Declan who was taking in the atmosphere. “You told him then?”
“I did. I’m sorry I made you keep that from him for so long, I was an -”
“Shut up Mount.” You pecked his lips. “It’s done now.”
“Thank you.”
“Is he okay about it?”
“He is.”
“See,” You smiled. “I told you that he’d be okay with it.”
“He said he’d break my kneecaps if I fucked up.”
“Well then Mount, better stay on my good side because we play for the same team so he’ll definitely know if you upset me.” You teased him.
“I think the colour blue would suit you better.” He smirked.
“You think so? I was more thinking the colour red…”
His eyes widened at your words. “No…”
“Maybe contract talks have already taken place…”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“Should have told Declan sooner.” You kissed his cheek. “Besides, who doesn’t like a bit of rivalry?”
Two Worlds Collided - Max Verstappen x reader

Requested? Yes/No: how you doing ? 😛

Summary: Dating the man that beat your Dad’s golden boy to his eighth world championship wasn’t exactly the easiest thing in the world.

Everything started when your Dad sent you to get coffee for him. It should have been just a normal and relatively easy task but today the world wanted to make everything a lot harder for you. Toto wasn’t in the best of moods so you were doing your best not to annoy him further. Max and Lewis had taken one another out on the track in Italy and needless to say, he was pissed and blamed Max immediately. When you left he was writing out an email for the FIA in the hopes of getting Red Bull a penalty, something you didn’t want to be around for.
You were rushing through the garages, frantically heading towards the Mercedes garage. Looking down at your phone you quickly checked the time to make sure you weren’t running too late when your body hit something solid. You felt yourself falling back as you dropped the coffee’s but before you could hit the ground a pair of strong arms wrapped themselves around your waist and held you close to their chest. Your eyes darted up to meet theirs.
Max Verstappen… shit…
“Good thing this suit is fireproof.” He glanced down at the coffee stains on his racing suit. “Otherwise maybe the press would believe that Mercedes have a vendetta against me.”
“I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention.” You tried your best not to stumble over your words as you spoke.
“It’s fine, I’m not exactly in pain.” He gave a light smile. “Just a bit damp.” His eyes met yours as his smile grew.
Max was known as someone who could never control his temper, a stone-cold dirty driver that wanted to win no matter what. He wouldn't care if he’d sent someone flying odd the track and into the wall or if he crashed into someone to stop them from winning, as long as he came out on top he didn't care. Toto and the rest of the garage hated him, sure he would give him credit where credit was due for his driving but other than that Toto hated him.
“You’re Toto’s daughter, right?” Max’s words grabbed your attention.
“I am.”
Max gave you a look before breaking out another smile. “And how’s that for you?” He didn’t wait for an answer before he spoke. “Stressful clearly.” His eyes trailed your body, smirking at the small coffee stains on your white Mercedes shirt.
Your eyes followed his and fell onto your chest. “Fuck sake.”
“I’ve got a spare shirt in my room if you want it.”
“If I get caught anywhere near you I’ll be killed -” You found your feet and pushed yourself away from his grip, weary anyone was watching.
“Just like your father, dramatic.” He smirked. “I have a spare shirt -”
“I’m not wearing a Red Bull shirt!”
“Relax, it’s just plain white. I’ll get your one washed and you’ll have it by the end of the day. Your Dad won’t ever need to know.”
“You think he won’t notice?” You looked at him like he was insane.
“Just lie to him,” Max said like it was nothing.
“Lie to him?” You looked at him in disbelief. “Sorry, but do you know who my Dad is?”
Max took a step closer to you, looking down at you with a smirk. “It’s a shirt, come to my room and get changed and whilst you do that I’ll go and replace those coffee’s that way Toto will be too distracted by his drink to notice, sound fair?”
You shouldn’t have followed him to his driver's room but you did. You knew if you were caught Toto would never let you turn up to a race ever again but you also knew he’d lose his shit if you didn’t turn up the coffee. You may have been his daughter but the man was under horrific stress. Lewis was currently battling things out with Max on the track in order to win his eighth world title and Toto was feeling every single inch of pressure.
You told Max what drinks you were once holding as you stepped into his room, his spare shirt on the side. You scanned his room, smiling to yourself as you saw the photos of him and his family around the room. It was clear this was the side of Max that others didn’t know. With drive to survive taking over fans' screens, it was clear Max was painted in a different light. No wonder why he refused to take part in the show this year.
Maybe he wasn’t all bad…
“Everything okay?” A soft knock at the door tore your eyes away from the photos as you changed.
“Fine.” You called back before opening the door to see Max holding all the drinks you once were. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” He smiled back.
“You haven’t poisoned them have you?” You raised your brow as you took the drinks into your own hands.
“You know I’m not as bad as the press makes me out to be.” His words were soft. You looked up at him to be met with his sad gaze. “I’m not like what they say.” He moved to sit down, closing the door behind him. “I just want to win.”
“They all do.” You replied, setting the coffee aside. “It just comes down to who wants it more, if you want it more than Lewis you’ll get it.”
“Do you think I can beat Lewis this season?”
You shrugged, moving to lean against the table. “That’s not for me to say -”
“Oh come on there’s no one here.” Max arched his brows. “I won’t snitch.” His lips turned up in a smirk. “Your secret is safe with me, Wolff.”
“You think I’m afraid of the press?”
“It’s not the press I think you’re worried about… I think you’re more afraid of your Dad finding out.”
“Could say the same about you, what would Jos Verstappen think if he found out that his son had the daughter of Toto Wolff in his room?”
“And what would Toto Wolff do if he found out his daughter was with his driver's rival?”
“I’m my own person you know Verstappen.”
“I could say the same thing.” Max leant back in his spot, his eyes trailing your body. “You look good in my shirt -”
“It’s a plain white shirt Verstappen, not exactly something with your name written on it.”
“Give it time.” He winked, earning you to roll your eyes.
“Well on that note I need to get back to the Mercedes garage, I’m already late so -”
“What hotel room are you in?” He suddenly cut you off.
“Why would you need to know that?”
“So I can return your shirt.”
Fair play Verstappen.
“Room fifty-seven.” You smiled back. “Thank you for that.” You picked the coffee’s up once again. “I appreciate it.”
“You won’t be spotted leaving, no one ever comes back here when they know I’m in here.”
“Why? You scare them that much?” A smile formed on your lips.
“They know not to bother me.” He smiled back.
“Thank you Verstappen.” You nodded, sending him a final goodbye as you left.
That wasn’t the last meeting you’d have with Max, far from it in fact. He came to your hotel room that night and he didn’t exactly drop off your shirt and leave. He had qualified that day and the two of you ended up spending the night talking about what had taken place. Max opened up to you and you opened up to him. The pair of you both had a Dad in the spotlight and the world was watching you both to see if you lived up to your father’s spotlight.
The next day was the day of the Russian Grand Prix. Lewis desperately wanted a win and needless to say he succeeded with him taking home the trophy and Max coming in a close second. It was rare Lewis ever wanted to go out and celebrate, normally he would have a chilled evening with the team and then head off to bed but tonight was different. He’d asked you to join him and you happily agreed.
You’d gone out with a few drivers before, mainly Lando and Daniel but you never stayed too long. You knew Toto didn’t like you being around certain drivers, he knew what they were like and the last thing he wanted for his daughter was to get her heart broken by some basic rich boy. Toto always wanted Lewis to be present if you went out with another driver, just because he knew he could trust him but Toto never accounted for the times you’d be alone in the hotel hallways.
“Have a good night?” A sudden voice swam through the air. You were currently walking back to your hotel room after your night at the club. You’d decided to leave earlier than everyone else as you knew Toto would want to fly home to England late the next day. He always missed Jack, your younger brother, and couldn’t stand to be away from him longer than he needed to be.
Your eyes darted over to the sound, gazing into the eyes of Max Verstappen. “Hmm? Oh yeah… I did.” You gave him a faint smile. “And you?”
“Not much to celebrate.” He huffed.
“You came second that’s still an achievement.”
“You don’t win a World title by coming second.”
You shrugged at his words, steadying yourself as you walked towards him. “You have a point but second place isn’t something to be ashamed of, you still beat most drivers on the grid.”
“Most isn’t all.” He replied.
“Oh give over Verstappen.” You took a few steps closer to him, your hands resting on his chest, the alcohol in your system giving you confidence. “You know you’re the best driver on the grid.”
“You think that?” He smirked.
“I know it for a fact.”
“Are you drunk?” His smirk turned to a smile.
“No… only tipsy…”
“You need to get to bed.” He stepped closer, his hand wrapping around your waist. “Aren’t you going back to England tomorrow?”
“You remembered.” You smiled up at him. “Lewis has my keycard though…”
“And where is he?”
“Still at the club?”
Max’s expression turned sour. “You mean to tell me he just let you walk back here on your own.”
“Basically…”
“Dickhead.” Max spat as he picked you up bridal style. “You can stay with me tonight -”
“Bloody hell Verstappen.” Your arms flung around his neck. “Haven’t even taken me on a date yet!” You giggled as the Dutch driver opened his hotel door, carrying you inside before placing you gently down on the bed. He rummaged through his bags and pulled out one of his shirts and a spare pair of his boxers.
He turned back to you and placed the clothes beside you. Grabbing a cloth he cupped your face and started to take off your make-up. Your face fell into his warm touch, slightly humming at the sensation on your skin. Max smiled before brushing your hair out, letting his fingers run through the strands.
“You think you can dress yourself?” He tilted your chin up to look up at him.
“Hmm…” You hummed back in approval. Max stepped back, turning his back and allowed you to slip your dress off. Throwing it aside you then threw your bra in front of Max, something which made the boy smirk from his place, next came your underwear, only making his grin grow. “You can turn around now.” Max spun on his heel to be greeted with a tired smile from you as you sat in his clothes.
“Better?”
“Perfect.”
“Come on,” Max moved to pull the duvet back, guiding you into his bed. “You need to rest, I’ll sleep on that sofa.” Max nodded to the small sofa across the room. “Just call me if you need me -”
“You can’t sleep on the sofa.” You whined as you lay down. “You’ll ache in the morning.”
“I ache every time I get into a car, a sofa won’t be an issue.”
“Then that’s even more of a reason to sleep in bed.”
Max knew he shouldn’t. He couldn’t lie to himself that after the pair of you spent the night chatting he’d grown a little soft spot for you. He shouldn’t have felt like that so quickly but there was something about you. Maybe it was because he knew you were off limits that only made him want you even more. He never saw you as a way to get back at Mercedes, that never crossed his mind, he just knew that he couldn’t get lost in this. He couldn’t fall for someone he couldn’t have.
But he was Max Verstappen and anything he wanted, he got.
That night wasn’t the last you’d spend in bed with one another. That morning you woke up in one another's arms before Max had to wake you up so you wouldn’t be late. You’d lied to Lewis and told him you stayed with Lando, luckily for you Lando couldn’t remember anything from the night so he just agreed.
You’d spent weeks getting to know Max and when the USA GP rolled around it was now his time to show everyone he was capable of winning this World Title. Max had won the race and invited you to join him and a few others in the celebrations. He kissed you for the first time that night and the rest was history.
The day Toto found out was one you’d never forget and it also happened to be the day of the biggest race of the season. Auba Duabi.
Max knew it was stupid to kiss you in front of the entire world when he won his first championship but at that moment he didn’t care. You were clapping alongside the Mercedes mechanics, trying not to look too happy when Max got out of the car. Max took his helmet off and looked over at you, a smirk on his lips. To anyone looking on it would have just looked as if he was being smug to the Mercades workers but in actual fact, it was for you. He strode over to you like he owned everything in the world and pulled your lips onto his. If Toto didn’t hate Max already he certainly did now.
Toto hid away in one of the IT rooms, not wanting to be hounded by the press after his daughter had just kissed his rival in front of everyone. You knew you had to face him so you left Max to talk to interviewers to talk to him. Toto was sitting in one of the chairs looking out to the track, he tapped his finger against his cheek, ticking away like a bomb.
“Dad?” You opened the door before closing it quietly behind you. “I need to explain what just happened… Max and I -”
“How long have you been hiding that from me?” He asked, still not, looking at you.
“Since America, the end of October.”
“All that time…” He straightened his back, running his hand through his hair. “And you just lied to me?”
“It’s not like I wanted to.” You stepped further into the room. “I never wanted to hide it from you -”
“But you did.” He turned on his chair to finally meet your gaze. “For months and then the time you decide to make everything public you do it on the day Red Bull cheated us out of a win, Lewis could have won his eighth World Title if it wasn’t for him -”
“See this is why I didn’t tell you.” Your teary eyes met his. “Because you turn it into some shitty rivalry thing. You don’t care about how I feel, how he makes me feel. You always turn it around and make it a work thing.” You stepped closer to him. “I know how much Lewis and this entire team mean to you, this sport is my life as much as it is yours but there are times when you need to separate the two and me and Max being together is one of those times.”
“Maybe you should have thought about that before you decided to kiss him in front of the world and you didn’t even tell me first, I had to find out when everyone else did, how do you think I feel?”
“I know.” You sat down, wiping the tears that had spilt. “I know, I understand that and please believe me when I tell you that I never meant for it to happen like that.”
Toto gave you a look, he was searching your eyes for a lie but couldn’t find one. “When were you going to tell me?”
“If I’m honest I was waiting until this season ended. Then I would have told you during the break, Max could have come over -”
“He’s not setting foot in my house.” Toto snapped.
“Dad…”
“He’s not.” He took a deep breath as a small knock sounded at the door. Max, drenched in champagne opened the door slowly before stepping inside. Toto met his gaze and any inch of forgiveness he wanted to give you quickly disappeared. “Get out.”
“I just want to talk to you.” Max replied, making his way over to you, his hand resting on your shoulder. “That kiss was my fault. I instigated it… as you probably could have guessed.”
“Don’t touch her.” Toto’s eyes fell onto Max’s hand.
“Christ if you hate that you’d hate to know what he did after America -”
“You’re a cheating prick you know that Verstappen?” Toto jumped up. “Just like your father, you will never achieve anything -”
“Dad!” You now snapped at Toto.
“Yeah?” Max’s tone turned sour. “My Dad was never a world champion and from what I remember neither are you but I am.”
“Only because you cheated -”
“The FIA disagrees. You just can’t handle that there’s someone on that grid that won’t let your precious golden boy through when he gets too close.”
“You know what.” Toto headed towards the door. “I hope the two of you get on well because you’re not coming back home all the time you’re with him.” He didn’t say another word as he slammed the door behind him and left you two in the darkened room.
Max didn’t wait a second before pulling you into a hug. Your face met his race suit as you burst into tears. Your arms wrapped around him as you sobbed. “I’m so sorry,” Max mumbled into your hair. “It was a stupid thing to do -”
“Why Max?” You held onto his racing suit. “Why did you have to do that?”
“I just wanted to share this night with the woman I love and not just behind closed doors. It was stupid, I should have waited and we could have told Toto after Christmas.” His grip tightened on you as he soothed your cries. “Look,” Max looked down at you, his hand moving to pull your face away from his chest to look at him. “I know it’s hard but let's forget about it, for now, go out and celebrate and then we’ll talk to him tomorrow. If things don’t go as planned then you can move in with me, we’ll spend Christmas together if you want.” He took a deep breath. “I know it won’t be the same but -”
“I’d love to.” You cut him off.
You never wanted to ruin Max’s day and make it all about yourself but he was partly to blame for your sadness and he knew that. Drying your tears the pair of you went back to his hotel room to get ready for the party and sure enough with a drop of alcohol you forgot about what had happened a few mere hours ago and you could now enjoy your night never having to worry if someone posted an accidental photo of you and Max getting a little too close. Whilst you and Max were side by side in one another's arms Toto was sitting on his hotel bed, still working whilst Susie was scrolling through social media.
“Have you spoken to her?” Susie suddenly asked, her eyes glued on that man before her.
“I’m working -”
“I don’t care.” She cut him off. “Have you spoken to her?” Toto let out a deep breath, taking his glasses off before running his hands through his hair.
“Yes…”
“And?”
“It didn’t go well.”
“Toto -”
“Why him Susie? Why out of every driver on that grid did she have to go for him?” He looked defeated as he spoke. “And she lied to me for months, telling me she was meeting a friend or just going for a walk but in actual fact, she was going to see him. All this time -”
“And why do you think she kept it from you?” The woman arched her brows, clearly on your side. “Because she knew you’d act like this! And I can bet you anything you two didn't just have a normal conversation -”
“He ruined it! We were talking and he came in and ruined it.”
“Then you ignore him like an actual adult.” Susie sat on the end of the bed as she spoke again. “What did you say to her?”
“Regretable things.” He replied.
“Like?”
He debated if he should tell her or not but he also knew he’d have to say something when you didn’t return home with them. “I kicked her out.”
“I beg your pardon?” Susie was close to kicking him out after those words.
“I didn’t mean what I said, he instigated it -”
“Toto you’re her father you shouldn’t throw words like that around when her boyfriend drops a stupid comment.” Susie huffed. “I understand that her lying to you isn’t going to help this situation but you also need to understand where she’s coming from. What happened today has nothing to do with Max and you need to remember that. If the FIA stay by their decision then we go again next year. This isn’t the end for Lewis and this shouldn’t end your and y/n’s relationship. Look,” She turned her phone to show him photos of you and Max at the party. “She’s happy with him, isn’t that what you want?”
“How do you feel about it?” Toto suddenly asked, his eyes darting from the photos.
“It doesn’t matter what I think, she isn’t my daughter.”
Susie had a point. You were Toto’s eldest child and had grown up alongside the race track. Your mother had passed so he took care of you whilst he balanced his business and racing career. He knew the dangers of raising you by a track, one of them being you’d be around people he didn’t want you to be but he knew you were smart enough to stay away from those he didn’t like well… so he thought.
“Why didn’t she go for Lewis?” He threw his glasses aside. “Or Mick, or George -”
“Clearly she wanted a World Champion.”
“Lewis is a World Champion…”
“Not the current one though.”
“Don’t start that.” He complained. “I’ll speak to her.”
Another conversation led to another argument, surprisingly Max stayed out of this one and yet it still all went to shit. You tried to not let it all get to you but that was easier said than done. Living with Max was vastly different to your life if England. Instead of being woken up by an excited Jack, you were greeted with two cats that looked as if they should have lived in the Savannah rather than a Monaco apartment and as much as you loved growing closer with Max and the two of you planning your lives out with one another you still couldn’t help but miss Toto despite his harsh words that had pulled you apart.
The season was underway again with the first race starting in Bahrain and for the first time in your life, you didn’t go as a guest for Mercedes but for Red Bull. Max did his best to keep you by his side the entire time, not wanting any press to get near you and ask you unwanted questions. He also didn’t want your Dad to waltz into the garage and ruin things yet again but even he couldn’t stop that.
“You okay?” Max asked. His eyes fell on yours as you sat in the garage, watching the mechanics work.
“I’m fine.” You smiled back at him as he walked over to you. He stood before you, his hands moving to your chin and lifting it towards him. “How are you feeling?”
“It’s only practice so I’m not nervous. Anything can happen.”
“Exactly so be careful.” You narrowed your gaze at him.
“I’m always careful.” He smiled knowing that wasn’t true in the slightest.
“I’ve moved in with you and now you’re lying to me.” You mirrored his smile.
“Only once in nearly six months.” His smile turned into a smirk.
“Max!” He leaned down and placed a kiss on your lips cutting you off. He pulled away after a second just to go and deepen the kiss even more. His thumb grazed your cheek as he tugged on your bottom lip, making you want him more. “Don’t start something you can’t finish Verstappen.” You pulled back, smirking up at him.
Max straightened himself, his hand cupping your jaw as he looked down at you. “You know I can finish.”
“Verstappen?” A sudden voice made the two of you jump apart. The Dutchman spun around to be greeted with the eyes of your father. Toto wanted nothing more than to yell at what he’d seen and just walk off like nothing had happened but he knew he couldn’t, he wanted to make amends. “Can we talk?”
“Me?” Max asked.
“Yes…”
“Just me?” He arched his brows, confused as to why Toto would just want to speak to him rather than the two of you. Max looked back at you before planting a kiss on your forehead. “I won’t be long.” You nodded, sparing a glance at Toto before Max led him away to his driver's room.
Max slammed the door behind him before turning to face Toto. “Why the fuck are you -”
“Do you love her?” Toto suddenly cut him off in a harsh tone. His eyes didn’t leave Max’s figure as the brunette looked at him in disbelief.
“Sorry?” Max couldn’t believe he was even being asked that question.
“You heard the question Verstappen.”
“Yeah I did but I’m trying to work out why you’d even ask me that? What do you think I made her my girlfriend to get back at you? Do you think it was my way of finding out information about Mercedes? You know Toto everyone else out there might think I’m a selfish brat who can only win by shoving others off the track but I’m not like that and y/n was the only one who gave me a chance to tell my side of the story. She knew what it was like to be in the spotlight since she was born and she knew what it was like to feel the pressure of living up to your father's expectations. I have told her every single thing about me so do forgive the idea that I may be confused as to why you’d ask me if I do in fact love your daughter.”
“So you do?”
“Of course I fucking love her. If she asked I’d give up my World Title for her, I’d leave Formula 1 if that’s what she wanted. I love her more than anything and anyone in this world and I would have thought these past few months would have told you that.” Max took a breath. “But then again you were never there for her. All those nights she spent crying because she just wanted you to forgive her, I was there, I dried her tears every single time. You never called, you never even came to see her on Christmas. You don’t have to like me, I’m not asking for you to forget how we both lied but I’m asking you to treat her like your daughter again and not like some stranger.”
“I need to apologise to you too.”
“You need to appologise to her first.”
“I wanted to apologise to you first. If she sees me making the effort with you she may forgive me faster.”
Max eyed your father, scanning his face for a lie but he never saw one. “That’s a smart move.”
“I’m sorry for what happened. I never meant what I said, you can even ask y/n, I’ve always thought you were talented but the thought of you dating my daughter was something that I would need time to get used to. I was so angry at a decision by the FIA that I took it all out on the two of you. I know you didn’t make that decision and I need to learn to separate the sport and my daughter's feelings. What happens on that track and in these garages should stay on the track. I shouldn’t bring any shitty decision to her and your relationship.”
Max waited a few seconds before speaking again. “If she accepts your apology then so will I. I love her and if she’s happy with moving on then I will. She’s already met my family and they love her so I just hope you’ll accept me into yours like mine did with her.”
That comment hurt Toto. He’d really fucked up this time. You and he have argued in the past but it was still rare. The two of you were as close as they could come and the past few months without you made his heartache.
“Can you go and get her for me?”
Max nodded, turning on his heel as he walked back out to the garages to grab you. Max could tell Toto was being sincere and genuinely wanted his and your forgiveness but he wouldn’t show Toto an inch of kindness until you did. No matter his opinion of your father he would stand by you and show Toto the same respect you would.
When he entered the room with you again he sent Toto one glance before he leaned down to kiss you. Max didn’t hesitate when he deepened the kiss, cupping your jaw whilst his arm pulled your waist into his hips. Max pulled back eventually, smirking down at you before placing one last peck on your lips. “I’ll be just outside if you need me.”
“Thank you, love.” You smiled as he left, now leaving you and your Dad alone for the first time in months.
Toto looked as if he hadn’t slept since the end of last season. His face brightened when he saw you but his face was still dull and the glint in his once happy eyes had left. “y/n…”
“How’ve you been?” You asked, doing your best to not just run and give him a hug. “You looked tired.”
“I haven’t exactly slept well since our argument.”
“You can tell.” You couldn’t help but smile a little at your own words.
Toto mirrored your facial expression before his lips fell back into a line. “Y/n… I’m so sorry.” He took a deep breath before he continued. “I shouldn’t have said what I said. I should have never kicked you out of the house just because you started dating a rival driver. I understand why you kept it a secret, you know I’d react how I did because I couldn’t separate work from family and for that I’m sorry. I want you to move back in with us, I want Max to be a part of the family. I want us to go out for meals, with him, I want him to stay over and be one of us and for that to happen I need to put my bitterness aside. Y/n I am so sorry for what I said, please can you forgive me for what happened?”
Your smile grew before you spoke. “I hate to break it to you but I won’t be moving back in with you and Susie. As much as I miss you both and Jack, I enjoy living with Max although I am going to try and convince him to move closer to you both.”
“Think I can live with that.” He smiled.
“I’m sorry for keeping it from you -”
“No y/n it was all my fault, please don’t apologise for that.”
“Well… your apology is accepted. I won’t forget what happened but I can thank you for basically letting me move in with my boyfriend and we’re closer than ever, even with his family.”
“I think it’s only fair we invite Max round for dinner.”
“As long as you won’t kill him.”
“I can’t promise I won’t give him a hard time but I’ll promise I won’t kill him.” His smile grew. “Unless he hurts you.”
“I can assure you that you’ll never need to worry about Max hurting me. He’s been the best thing that’s happened to me for a while.”
“How did you two even meet properly? A night out?”
“You remember the day I was late to bring you coffee last season? I walked straight into him and nearly burned the bloke, he replaced the coffee and gave me a new shirt so it didn’t look suspicious, that night he gave me back my Mercedes shirt that he’d washed and we spent the night talking, he looked after me when I came back home slightly drunk without Lewis one night and well things just sort of went off from there.”
He nodded, suddenly connecting the dots. “He loves you.”
“I’d bloody hope he did if I’m honest.”
Toto laughed at your words, stepping closer to you. “I guess he’s a part of the family then.” He held his arms out, silently asking for a hug which you happily complied with. “Unless he hurts you…” He muttered. “Then I’ll make sure he ends up under Lewis’ car.”
“Guess we’ve got to invite him for dinner and see if you two get on as well as I want you to.”
