Do not come on my posts with âBlack Women Are Superhuman Beings Who Can Handle Anythingâ takes. Thatâs a dangerous and reductive rhetoric rife with misogynoir. No, black women cannot take more negative and harmful attacks than other women can. Black women are not primed to withstand more attacks and harassment than women of other races. Stop. That is horrifying. Black women deserve grace, compassion, and a soft place to rest, not constant burdens.
Pedro describing Joel in an interview as a âcaretakerâ instead of just calling him a protector is such an important distinction, because when you think of a protector, you think of someone who is strong and hardened; but when you think of a caretaker, you think of someone gentle and nurturing. While Joel is definitely a fierce protector, he also has this softness within him, this primal instinct to take care of peopleâand it never left him, no matter how hard he tried to bury it with Sarah. We see this in him from the very first episode, and we have continued to see it all the way through until the most recent.
Episode 1: He tends to Tessâs cuts and bruises on her face, grabbing a cloth and alcohol and tenderly dabbing it on her cheek. (Been a while since I watched the episode, so Iâve probably missed some other examples).
Episode 2: He gets out his tape and starts wrapping it around Tessâs sprained ankle on the roofâshe doesnât even need to ask him, he just does it. He even throws Ellie a bandage to wrap around the clicker bite on her arm.
Episode 3: He covers Ellie with his jacket (off-screen) sometime throughout the night, and gives her the rest of his food, despite being in the middle of giving her the silent treatment after what happened to Tess. He even wraps a seatbelt around her in the car! Like a parent strapping their kid in
Episode 4: He notices Ellie is getting tired on the road, and decides to pull over for the night. He cooks her Chef Boyardee ravioli for dinner. He immediately checks her over for injuries and asks if sheâs hurt after they crash. He tries to COMFORT her and even APOLOGISES to her for putting her in the position to shoot someone to save him.
Episode 5: He gives Sam some of his food. He invites the brothers to come with them to Wyoming, not just because he knows they wouldnât survive out there on their own, but also for Ellie because he can see how close she is with Sam and he wants her to have a friend. He asks Ellie if sheâs okay after an infected Sam attacked her, AND HE WOULD HAVE PULLED HER INTO HIS ARMS AND COMFORTED HER if Henry didnât point the gun at him.
Joel is absolutely a caretaker at his very core, and I love that Pedro used that word to describe him. I just think itâs such an insightful detail of the character, one that transcends Joel beyond just being a stereotypically macho man*, and instead makes him more of an actual father.
*I am not at all saying that Game Joel is stereotypical, because he absolutely shows his gentle side sometimes! But I just think itâs a trait that is more intrinsic within TV Joel.
