An Open Letter To My Father

Dear dad,

I know my truth is going to be painful for you, but I think the purpose of this letter is more important than your temporary guilt. This letter is not only for my father, but I believe is applicable to many fathers,  who also stood behind Donald Trump in this election. I encourage my lady friends to share this, as our parents need to know how deeply they have wronged their children.

When you stood up for Donald Trump, our new president-elect, you made a chance to stand against me. You failed me, and you failed my sister, your beautiful children, that you brought unwillingly into this world. When you took a stand for Donald Trump you sent bone chilling messages of how little we mean to you, because your political agenda was more than our worth as women, carried more weight to you than our human rights ever did. We are in danger, and you helped put us on the front lines of the battle zone.

When you stood for Donald Trump in this election, you told us that you support sexual predators; that a man unwillingly grabbing us by the pussy is ok with you, and that men like that not only have the right to assault us, but to guide our lives and our bodily decisions for many years to come. 

When you stood behind a man who refers to women he doesn’t like as “dogs,” “nasty,” and “disgusting animals,” you told us, that you think, we too, should stand behind our abusers. 

“When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything …Grab them by the pussy … You can do anything.” -Donald Trump-

When you backed a person who bases a woman’s value on whether or not she is attractive, you told me that the only thing my sister and I have going for us is our appearance. You took away the strength we carry as women with powerful minds, and widdled us down to whether or not we’re as he would say, “a hot piece of ass.” You denied us of our individuality, and expressed to us that our looks are the only way to get things done. Furthermore, you taught us that if we don’t have them, we’re fucked. For some reason I’m not feeling empowered by the messages you and your president are putting out there…and I’ll make it clear, what a grave sadness it is, to have a father who could give a shit about empowering his daughters if it gets in the way of his own agenda. 

“I mean, we could say politically correct that look doesn’t matter, but the look obviously matters. Like you wouldn’t have your job if you weren’t beautiful.”  -Donald Trump-

And lastly, you’ve backed someone who wants to take away my right to chose what I do with my body. You’ve told me, that men deserve to make that choice for me, and that I am not capable of making smart, healthy decisions myself. Your president, and his VP have already taken a stance on defunding Planned Parenthood, an organisation I have turned to for STD testing, contraceptive aide most of my life. Oh, and if I decided to go not to Planned Parenthood for help, but my actual OBGYN, your president would like to take my right to terminate a pregnancy I may not be able to support, because you guys don’t think I know what’s best for my and my reproductive organs. He may even implement a way to punish me for having an abortion if I feel I need one! Way to really be there for your kids!

Look. Here is the bottom line dad. You have chosen someone who does not choose me. In doing so, you have abandoned me, and you have abandoned my sister. You have hung us out to dry to save your own bacon, and that is not the job of a father, at least not the last time I checked. I still love you, but I am truly disheartened by this decision, disappointed in your parenting choices, and saddened by the lack of support I will receive from you and your allies over the next 4-8 years, depending. I hope this message finds your heart, and I hope some day you realise what an utter mistake you’ve made…Until then, I accept that you can’t be there for me, I accept that you’ve taken up with the enemy, and I accept that your confusion is not personal to who I am, or who I will become as the uphill battle continues. 

Thanks for forcing me to be stronger by standing against me. For that lesson, I am forever grateful.
