A Couple Months Of Hard Work From Three Dozen Artists, And Its Finished! Breakaway Is A Tangled/Tangled
A couple months of hard work from three dozen artists, and it’s finished! “Breakaway” is a Tangled/Tangled the Series picture music video multi-artist project that follows the story of Rapunzel and her friends through the canon of the movie and the show. This was a lovely project to work on, and everyone involved was lovely to work with!

UNDERTALE Rec Post
(EDIT: Some of the tagging links are a bit wonky on this and I cannot for the life of me figure out what went wrong how to fix them, which is SUPER frustrating because I REALLY wanted people to know they had been tagged and recced…but anyone with a @ in front of their name can be found on tumblr at that name!)
Here’s the deal: my about page has a “blogroll” section, but since this blog is for an UNDERTALE comic, it wouldn’t make much sense to post my personal blogroll here. Lots of my followed blogs have nothing to do with the game, and some aren’t SFW (while this comic/blog is). So I decided instead I would write up a little rec post of some of my favorite fanthings. (…then it wound up being a giant recpost that took me many weeks to finish.) There’s a little bit of everything here; comics, animations, fics, music, blogs, meta. I’ve been wanting to make a post like this for ages, so I’m glad I now I finally have a reason to get up off my butt and do it! This post will be copied onto the formerly empty “blogs” section (where it will eventually be updated as I find more cool things), but I wanted to make it an actual post too so people could reblog it, bookmark it and go through later, and share the love! (No, seriously, REBLOG IT. This took me forever and this stuff is cool as hell and deserves all the adoration. I know it’s a really long post, but I knew for sure nobody would get a notification about being tagged if it was behind a cut! Stay determined. If you prefer, there’s a mobile/dash-friendly version you can reblog here.)
(By the way, if you read/watch/listen to any of these, please please PLEASE come and yell with me on my main about them. It’s all I want in life. Forget MY comic, go read all of this!)
~*~SUPER SPECIAL SECTION FOR MY FIRST LOVES~*~
Insomnia by @wilyart A comic centered around different types of color/trait magic and the blasters, in which Sans can’t sleep because when he does, he dreams of working on a project he wasn’t a part of with someone who doesn’t exist. Throw in a nightmarish version of the kid who helped free them from the underground, hazy memories of a timeline where that same kid murdered everyone including Sans himself, Sans scrambling to hide his condition from Papyrus, and Sans’ own curiosity wrestling with the sinking suspicion that he really, really doesn’t want to remember any of it all, and you get one of the most compelling stories I’ve read ever, not just for the UNDERTALE fandom. Guys, I can’t rec this one highly enough. Even aside from the incredible, breathtaking art in each and every panel, Wily is a master at her craft and uses visual storytelling to its fullest potential, packing tons emotion and information into single frames without using so much as a single word. Her environments are strikingly memorable, atmospheric, and hauntingly beautiful, full of mysterious color-coded hints about the larger puzzle that she presents to us. I find something new to be excited about every time I reread it, and trust me, I reread it a lot. UPDATES: Sundays
Glitchtale by @camilaart Glitchtale is a world of endless possibilities: when you reset the game too many times, the world begins to “glitch,” and things that shouldn’t be able to happen begin to happen anyway. That comes with a price: you can only reset a timeline so many times before it’s gone for good. Right now the animation has two seasons. The first focuses on what happens underground; how too much tampering with the timelines on Frisk’s part offers both new enemies to deal with and new possibilities for the future. It’s mostly fight scenes, and it’s COOL AS HELL. Beginning with an animation of a Sans facing off against the human at the end of a Murder Run, we also get cool face-offs such as Sans and Flowey vs. glitch!Chara, Sans vs. Gaster, and even Omega Flowey, Gaster, and Sans fighting together. I’m not normally an action person, but these fights are exciting, funny, and completely kickass. They’re paced perfectly along with a energetic epic soundtrack and there’s enough story there near the end to move anyone to tears. (There’s also a Glitchtale-compliant animation of Sans vs. Omega Flowey, but more on that below.) The second season is so far pretty plot-heavy, though Camila has said more fights are coming; it focuses on post-game events in a creative and cool way, with an unforgettable custom soundtrack plot twists that you’ll never see coming. Each episode of Season 2 so far has been ~20m, and between that and the professional pacing it’s enough to make it feel like you’re watching a real cartoon. The story Camila’s telling us never stops surprising me. UPDATES: When it’s ready, so quit asking her!
Listen. I love every single thing I’m going to rec in this post to absolute pieces, otherwise I wouldn’t rec it. Each and every comic, fic, animation, meta, and song inspires and delights me, and it all makes me want to work harder and do better on my own project. But these two projects were some of the first I encountered, and when I’ve struggled with something or been intimidated by the long road I have ahead of me, I’ve long looked to these creators and their pieces as my own inspiration and guide. They’re very close to my heart; some of the first UNDERTALE fanstuff I encountered and the only two UNDERTALE fan AUs I’ve done fanart for (SO FAR…). I don’t know if they ever see the stuff I make for their universes but I do know, full stop: without them, this comic would not exist. I’m so grateful every day that they’ve shared their talents and ideas with us!
And with that out of the way, now for the rest that I also adore! Everything on this list is absolutely awesome, guys, you are about to have SO much reading/watching/etc to do!
(These are in no particular order, sorry, just divided by medium. Also, a small note about the comic links: in the case where the comics don’t have their own blog or index page, I linked to the first page instead of using a tag URL or /chrono tag URL because the Tumblr app simply can’t read those, and I want everyone to be able to access them. So for the handful of first pages that don’t have a “next” link, you can usually just check the tags on the post to find the main comic tag, and if you’re on a browser and not the app, add “/chrono” to the tag to make the posts in it show in the order they were posted; for example http://undertale-refuse.tumblr.com/tagged/comic/chrono.)
COMICS
Handplates by @zarla-s The premise for this is pretty simple: Dr. Gaster created Sans and Papyrus to do horrible science experiments on, and keeps them a total secret, locked away in the True Lab. You’d think this would be pretty straightforward never-ending suffering (and okay, yes, it is), but the story Zarla has crafted here is extremely well-done, intricate and thoughtful. No one in UNDERTALE does bad things without a reason, and that includes the guy who tortures children. I didn’t in my wildest dreams imagine I could care about a character who does all the terrible things her Gaster does, but actually he’s probably my favorite Gaster of them all. He has SO MUCH depth, it’s a little frightening. Somehow, just like Papyrus, all I want is for him to stop what he’s doing and become a better person. Even without the clever writing and beautiful artwork, that in itself is an incredible feat. (And even with such a dark premise, Zarla will manage to wring a chuckle or two out of you as well with all the sidecomics.) UPDATES: Whenever
Dogs of Future Past by @lynxgriffin A post-Pacifist comic where Frisk learns there’s one last monster who was never saved, and decides to use their unique save and load powers one last time to try and bring Dr. Gaster home, and in order to use that power without ruining everyone’s happy ending, they borrow an Amalgam soul…from a dog. Naturally, it all goes wrong, and Frisk, Flowey, and “Greatest Dog,” the owner of the borrowed soul, all end up stuck in a small dog in the Underground of days gone by. I don’t want to give away too much more of the plot, but rest assured this one is an incredible read. It’ll make you laugh, a LOT, and it’ll surprise you and make you cry too. The artist storyboards professionally, so it reads very much like something official, and the ending is one of those that’ll have you yelling and pointing at your screen excitedly. (Or maybe that was just me?!) UPDATES: COMPLETE!
The Thought by @tratserenoyreve What might happen if Sans, with his knowledge of what’s to come, managed to capture the final human soul, Frisk’s soul, for ASGORE. There’s really not much more I can say about this one without giving away EVERYTHING, and it’s one of those things you just gotta read blind. It’s gonna blow your mind, I promise. All that fourth wall stuff the game itself threw at us doesn’t hold a candle to this. Toucan!Sans even has his own theme song. (Spoilers for the comic, though.) UPDATES: COMPELTE!
@underrift by @bunnikkila Everyone is starting to have strange dreams of a man who speaks in hands, in turns kindly and sinister, and now it seems to be on Sans to protect his friends from someone no one can even remember. I love this comic a lot, everyone is so IC and the dialogue and story flows really well; this artist has nonverbal beats and the like down pat and I just love the way they draw Frisk! One of the cooler and more unique things about this comic is that there’s a whole slew of secret hints at a sort of…truer Gaster, if you are a nerd and love to read WINGDINGS like I do. I can’t wait to see how it all turns out. <3 UPDATES: Monday/Wednesday/Friday
Protective!Sans AU by @literalnobody In which Sans actually works a little at keeping the promise he made to Toriel. This one only has a few pages spread out here and there instead of a cohesive blow-by-blow, but seeing him try to smooth talk Undyne and get wrapped up by Muffet when all he wants to do is get back to doing nothing, I can’t not add it to the list. UPDATES: Whenever
Salt AU by @little-lunaticart The polar opposite of the above and just as cool and funny. In this, Sans is extra salty on a Pacifist run after a Genocide one, and so he trolls Frisk at every turn just to make their “redemption arc” extra difficult. This one right now is just a few ideas here and there too, but the jokes and art style for this I absolutely adore. It’s one of my favorite things right now, I’d absolutely rec everything this artist draws! UPDATES: Whenever
@flavor-text-chara by @amalgarn The NarraChara theory in part askblog, part comic form. It’s the entire game from Chara’s point of view, on a first playthrough True Pacifist run, and it’s just finished the Waterfall part of the game. The characterizations for the Frisk and Chara in this are really cute and funny (Frisk tending to run headlong into danger, and Chara longsuffering), but one of the coolest parts of this comic is watching Chara trying to figure out just how long it’s been since they died, and what happened since Asriel stumbled away from the human village. The suspense!! (There’s a dub I love of this, as well.) UPDATES: HAITUS until ~February
@underlineau by @ifellforundertale / @sureisdusty / @littlegrumblranna This blog actually does a series of several comics all based in the same-ish universe (they have some AUs of their own AU, too, but who doesn’t?), with the premise that Chara has the ability to save and load from the time they fall down. They seek the help of the Royal Scientist, “Gaster,” to help them figure stuff out, and from there…well, I won’t give anything away, but it’s a wonderful read. The art style is very cute, and the relationship between Chara and Asriel is so warm and real, and the attention paid to detail is incredible. (THE ASTERISK!!! You’ll know what I mean when you get there.) This comic can be both funny (it’s still UNDERTALE) and bittersweet, because we all know how Chara’s story eventually ends (though finding out how they eventually die for good if they’re able to reload is really cool), but this comic shows them honestly for what they were: just another lost human kid doing their best to do good. UPDATES: Daily (holy crap!)
@theysayheshattered by @emilyparagraph The Neutral endings of UNDERTALE often get overshadowed by the Pacifist and Genocide ones, but this comic is dedicated to featuring them all, as all the timelines begin converging after a freak accident at the barrier. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite comics; the possibilities are nigh-endless. One Sans who lost his brother talking to another who didn’t, a King Papyrus seeing an Empress Undyne…and that’s just the beginning. I absolutely can’t WAIT to see where this one goes. UPDATES: Tuesday/Thursday
Some Things Can’t Be Fixed by @kerolunaticat Takes place when Papyrus and Sans are kids/teenagers. Papyrus has a new imaginary friend who asks him to do dangerous things. I love everything this artist draws, she has a wonderful art style, but this comic especially is fascinating. It hasn’t updated in a long time, but even if it never continues, it’s well worth what’s reading there now. I’d also rec everything she’s drawn for UNDERTALE; she specializes in cute and funny comics about younger skele-family antics and they’re some of my all-time favorites. UPDATES: Whenever
Floweypot by @creepyknees A series of comics about Flowey coming up to the surface to live with everyone and slowly learning to be…well. To be. Each member of the core UNDERTALE cast winds up babysitting him at least once (after he gets thrown out of Frisk’s school for, uh, being himself), and the care and kindness with which he’s portrayed is really nice. Watching him genuinely connect with people, as opposed to thinking of them as lines of code, is really cool; I see very few works of fiction where Flowey is still kind of horrible (because that’s been his base nature for so long) but is also shown in a sympathetic light, and shown wanting to TRY (or not wanting to, some days). This is probably one of the most nuanced and true depictions of Flowey out there! UPDATES: Whenever
Popato by @petite-pumpkin This started as a silly series of asks, but quickly morphed into a really cool story with zero fourth wall about everyone getting Gaster out of the void, influenced and guided by what asks people send in. I’m not making it sound as cool as it really is, trust me. Also I’d rec everything this artist draws; her style is so cute! She even takes requests from time to time, which is kind of her, and her OC “Pumpkin” is just adorabe. UPDATES: Whenever
Aftertale by @loverofpiggies I don’t think there’s anyone who hasn’t heard of Aftertale, but just in case: the one where Sans splits into two people after getting killed at the end of the game, and the two Sanses have very different views on the best way to stop the resets. This one is a really good and interesting read with a lot of cool ideas, and they don’t call her the “Crayon Queen” for nothing; as unbelievable as it sounds each and every page is done with crayons! It gives it a beautiful unique style that I don’t see often and absolutely adore. UPDATES: Tuesday/Thursday
Darker Yet Darker & The Second Son Of Gaster by @sansybones / & Seems Very Interesting by @kaleidraws I’ll confess I can’t recall EXACTLY how these fit together; if I’m not mistaken they’re either cowritten or in the same continuity! Regardless, they are origin stories for Sans, Papyrus, and Gaster respectively. These are a bit melancholy at times, and sweet during others (be sure to heed the warnings), and they use some really unique headcanons! Both artists are really skilled, too; sansybones is a master of the cross-hatch and I love the image-by-image style Kalei employs, it’s not something I’ve encountered before. The writing and characterization in these is top-notch, and even though Gaster’s not a good guy it’s definitely a good read. sansybones has also done a few cool one-shot comics! UPDATES: First two are COMPLETE!, last updates Whenever
Hungertale by @sonocomics A comic about a Frisk named Bacon who just wants a decent meal. For all the times the UNDERTALE characters try to feed you, very little of it is actually edible (frozen spaghetti, ketchup-soaked Grillby’s, ghost sandwiches, water sausage hot dogs, burgers made of sequins and glue…) so this winds up being really funny. I actually found this one through the dub, which is hilarious and incredibly well-done, but it doesn’t cover everything, including the True Ending, which is surprisingly sweet, so you’ll want to read the comic as well! UPDATES: COMPLETE!
Once Again by @mikoto-tsuki A comic about what might happen if Sans stepped in and took the killing blow meant for Papyrus in the Genocide Route. This scenario does get explored a lot, but there’s a nice little unique bit for this one that sets it apart in a really cool way (I won’t give it away). The art style for it is very cute as well, every page is just such a pleasure to look at! I think it’s almost done, I can’t wait to see the ending! UPDATES: Whenever
Everybody Lives by @literalnobody A comic where…you guessed it…everybody lives! By the same person who does the Protective!Sans AU; yep, this artist is awesome enough to make this list twice! In this Chara and Flowey are both living with everyone on the surface, and it’s been years since the last reset…it kind of moves back and forth between then and now, telling us what happened. Chara’s, uh, characterization (hahaha) in this is really neat, and while their motives right now remain mysterious I can’t wait to see what they’re up to. UPDATES: Whenever
Reminiscence by @smudgeandfrank Just before moving out of the underground and to the surface for good, Sans and Frisk stop by Grillby’s for one last drink and Sans, well, reminiscences about their first meeting, and his and Papyrus’ mysterious past, including how he met Gaster. With one catch: Grillby and Frisk must not tell Papyrus. What is Sans so desperate to hide…? This artist is really good with paneling and does WONDERFULLY vivid colors; I like this comic a lot and am always eager for the next update. UPDATES: Whenever
Pulling A Tooth by @mnstrcndy In this comic, Asgore actually does absorb the human souls as he’s been warned to do and goes godmode (we call him STABSGORE). mnstrcndy is an incredible artist with an unreal talent for scenery and environments, so despite this one not being finished it still well-worth checking out. If unfinished comics aren’t your thing, then just dive into the art tag; everything there is absolutely breathtaking! UPDATES: DISCONTINUED
Nightmares by @calicocanteloupe In this, Papyrus dreams about a previous timeline, and he and Sans begin to realize that resets are a real thing. I really like how comfortable (and in some ways straightforward) with each other in this, it’s nice and refreshing. There’s a sweet moment about halfway in that I absolutely adored too. You don’t often see Papyrus knowing about the whole timeline deal so I’m really excited to see where this goes! UPDATES: Whenever
@dreemurr-reborn by Fatz A multi-media project in which Frisk gives Asriel their soul to give Asriel a second chance at life. What’s really cool about this is that it’s a comic, but also used to be an ask blog, and it has some fangames too! It’s really expansive and well thought-out. UPDATES: Whenever
Playbacktale by @linssins A story where Papyrus accidentally absorbs the six human souls…and gets fused with Flowey. What happens when Flowey can feel and Papyrus can’t? It’s an interesting swap to be sure. The #aesthetic for this one is off the charts, I love it. UPDATES: Whenever
@brokenknifefrisk A Frisk on their first “playthrough” decides that killing is the only way, but when they meet Papyrus, who refuses to hurt them, they wonder if they’ve been wrong all this time. Not many comics explore how and why somebody might try the Genocide Path as their very first playthrough, so this is a really interesting read, and it’s nice to see Paps get a little credit for stopping one of those runs when people tend to focus on the Sans fight. This comic has a really cool and unique art style, too! UPDATES: HAITUS until a revamp is done, then roughly every 2-3 days
FIC & META
Flowey Is Not A Good Life Coach by @unrestedjade & UNSPKN by @ameb-stuff So I’m putting this one first because it has a comic that goes with it, but I’ll warn you straight away that it’s can be a VERY difficult read. I normally like to keep UNDERTALE as my happy place, but everyone talked about this one ALL THE TIME, so I decided to give it a go. The premise: Flowey in one of his early runs, and just why Papyrus is his favorite character to mess around with. The fic very well-done, no doubt about that, its depiction of abuse alarmingly accurate, and the author is a master of suspense. This one will take you on one hell of a ride, for for the fearful: don’t worry, the ending is mostly happy. UNSPKN is a fan-sequel in comic form which mostly focuses on Sans and Papyrus’ daily life and finding equilibrium. If you want EVEN MORE of this ‘verse, unrestedjade also has a few FINAGLC-related ficlets in this ficlet collection; just Ctrl+F “FINAGLC” with the entire thing open (so not in chapter-by-chapter view) to find them! UPDATES: The fic is COMPLETE!, the comic updates Whenever
The Scientist & Entropy by @talkingsoup This is probably my favorite UNDERTALE fic series right now. The first fic follows Gaster’s life from the time of the barrier’s creation to his demise in the CORE (and how he gets involved with Sans along with way), and the second fic focuses on Sans’ life after Gaster is gone. These are a wonderfully gripping read, perfect if you want to sink into some great longfic. The author is very skilled, really great with literary parallels and developed OCs, but where this REALLY shines is its portrayal of the complete and utter WRONGNESS of the world after Gaster gets erased from it. I think it’s easy for most people to think of the canon universe as the most “correct” one, if that makes any sense, and as prequels move closer to that inevitable point, we start recognizing things and things begin to feel familiar. But the world without Gaster in this verse feels alien, maimed; it should begin to feel more like home the longer we go on but instead it feels like going further down a path you were never supposed to take. It’s not RIGHT, and you can feel down in your bones why Sans is so desperate to fix the machine and put it back the way it used to be. UPDATES: Whenever
Frisk Learns Some New Words by Rakkogaki When Frisk takes their own sweet time exiting the Ruins, the unthinkable happens: Sans is actually forced to do his job. If you have ever just needed something funny and pure, this is your stop. There’s so much comedy gold in this I couldn’t begin to list it all (and hey, more fun to read it for yourself!). Everyone is so perfectly in character, and it’s a lighthearted self-contained little adventure that will leave you smiling for a long time after you’ve finished it. UPDATES: COMPLETE (it’s just a oneshot!)
A CHARActer Analysis by @determinators The one & only. I feel like probably everyone’s heard of this one by now, but in case you haven’t, take out an hour or two (yes, really; I believe I read somewhere this meta’s pagecount wound up being in the triple digits), and read up. My own interpretation of Chara is heavily influenced by this meta (there’s a good 95% overlap), and in fact this meta and a few others by this writer formed a large part of the inspiration for REFUSE! If you’re interested in NarraChara, if you think Chara is responsibly for the Genocide Route, if you want to know more about the Dreemurr kids, then this meta, a complete and thorough analysis of pretty much every major moment and interesting hidden detail that the narration in the game (which we can only assume is provided by Chara) provides us with, is for you. Plus, there’s a nice little animation at the start. Click it for that and then get prepared to get sucked in. UPDATES: COMPLETE (it’s a meta!)
ANIMATIONS
(A note: There are a LOT of animations I love to itsy bitsy teeny tiny bits, but if I’d stopped to write up a detailed rec for each of them I’d never have gotten this post done, so these are just a few of my favorites. A bigger list is further down!)
UNDERTALE ANNIVERSARY by @iscoppie This. Animation. Oh my GOD, where do I start? Okay, so this is a re-imagining of what Undyne and Alphys’ first meeting might have been like, and it made me go from “aww what a pure and wonderful gay ship to have” straight to “THEY BELONG TOGETHER FOREVER AND I’LL FIGHT ANYONE WHO TELLS ME OTHERWISE” with no chill on my way there. I would show this one even to non-UNDERTALE fans, full stop. This was nearly a year’s worth of work, and it shows: the animation is so smooth and so beautiful, each frame is its own little masterpiece. Aside from that, the voice acting and music choices for it are incredible, and it takes you through the entire spectrum of emotion, from suffocating hopelessness to the liberating joy of meeting someone new and special who can make you forget all the bad in your life, for just a little while. This brought me to tears the first time I watched it. It’s stunning.
Sans vs. Flowey by @camilaart Done by the animator of Glitchtale and technically Glitchtale-compliant!! These two are my favorite two characters and I absolutely LOVED watching them fight. Everything is so well choreographed and timed perfectly along with the music! (And, because it’s UNDERTALE, of course it’ll make you laugh, too.) For awhile I was watching this one every evening before bed just to end the day on a high note. Fast-paced, funny, and badass. Don’t miss it.
Echo Gaster Collaboration by …uh, everyone? but I can link to @echogaster and @techcat-mod Gaster is one of the weirdest parts of UNDERTALE because technically the dude doesn’t even exist, and here we all are trying to figure out every possible thing about him, and talking about him as much as we talk about any of the main characters. While a lot of UNDERTALE is left open to your own interpretation (understatement, I know), there’s NOTHING more open-ended than Dr. Gaster. So this cool collaborative project takes Gasters from almost a hundred different artists and puts them all together. This video sort of feels a bit like a love letter to fandom, to me; a tribute to how creative and passionate people are, how so many people can be given the exact same information and create an infinite amount of variations. (If you follow a lot of fanworks like I do, it’s also surprisingly exciting when one you recognize pops up.)
Planetary (GO) by @xamag-undertale I don’t think anything tells Mettaton’s story start to finish quite as well as this does. The song choice is smart, unapologetically vibrant just like MTT himself is, and the paneling of it feels so professionally done, spending just the right amount of time on each thing and matching every shot to just the right lyrics. I LOVE this artist’s style, each little expression is so emotive and amazing. It feels like watching a fanvid from something that doesn’t actually have usable footage. It’s PERFECT.
AUDIO WORK (VOICE ACTING/MUSIC/ETC)
@tellingundertales A voice-acted ask blog for a post-pacifist timeline which is now unfortunately closed. Still, everyone on the team was incredibly talented, and the archives remain open, so if you dig voice-acting, it’s worth a look-see. They also have a YouTube channel for dubbed comics!
Starbot Dubs / @starbotdubs This is really cool comic dubbing group. There’s a TON of comics on their YouTube channel, including dubs of some I’ve already recced here! The Thought & Handplates are my favorites. Even if you don’t normally like comic dubs, you’ll probably like these, because they breathe incredible life into both stories. Not only are the voice actors all really talented, but the soundtracks are expertly chosen, and along with the sound effects and transitions, it really does feel like watching a movie at times, it’s amazing.
Fallen by materiacollective These guys do absolutely amazing music, and this album is no exception. It was released on the anniversary and has NINETY-SEVEN (yes, you read that right) tracks! Every single one of these tracks is polished and professional, and the genres and types of music are incredibly varied. Some tracks are cinematic and emotive, others fun or experimental, some have lyrics, some have voiceovers, some use unconventional instruments or mash up tunes you wouldn’t think would go together, and there are a few done in really specific styles: an acapella version of Undertale (which, if I had to pick, is probably my favorite on the album), a trombone cover of It’s Raining Somewhere Else (finally!), a sea-shanty type version of NGAHHH!!, a song about Gaster that’s kind of done in a way that reminds me of Bohemian Rhapsody, a xylophone version of Bonetrousle, and a version of Your Best Nightmare that hops around from using glass bottles as instruments to acapella to screamo metal, just to keep you on your toes. It won’t all be for everyone, but everyone will definitely find something they adore here.
Strelok The person who does the official sound effect work for Glitchtale; he’s INCREDIBLY talented and prolific, so I just had to include a link to his channel. He “sounds” both comics and animations, and instead of using tradition voice acting does something similar to the Legend of Zelda series/early 3D games where you get voice clips, instead. The effect is EXTREMELY cool and totally unique; you really feel like you’re playing a game instead of just watching an animation/comic dub! Along with doing work for Glitchtale and Dreemurr Reborn from above, he has also done several short comics by @zarla-s, including her terrifying Sixbones AU, and the badass comic Megalo by @throesofangels. He also worked on a very cool animation with @amazingartistyellow (another awesome animator, one that he has done a few sound-things for!) called The Last Sentence.
FANGAMES
Endless Sans & FairDyne by Joe Zeng Two browser games where you can “train” with Sans and Undyne respectively, and dodge their bullet patterns as you would in the game. Even though Sans is my favorite, I have the most fun with the hardest level of FairDyne, because it actually works a little like a rhythm game—the attacks are timed to go along with the music! (Watch a near-perfect game here to see what I mean.) There’s a cute little secret in the easiest level for you, too, if you’re just REALLY bad at dodging. In a similar vein, there’s also Bad Time Simulator by jcw87, where you can see any of Sans’ attacks one by one or try to fight his fight exactly as it appears in the game. You can even upload customs attacks!
DETERMINATION by geek2games A deeply cool boss fight against Chara post-genocide. I can’t really say much about it without giving it all away, but aside from the art, concepts, and music being absolutely brilliant, it plays with the 4th wall to shock the hell out of you just as well as the original.
UNDERTALE RED by @taxiderby A boss fight against a new character called Red. The attacks are really cool and there’s a scenario for every route! It’s a nice little fight that really feels like it could be part of the game.
UNDERTALE YELLOW by UndertaleYellow The story of the Yellow Soul/Justice, in this instance a child named Clover. It’s incredibly well-done, from the new enemies being as full-developed as the ones in the original to the soundtrack and its subtle “cowboy” influence to the level designs being all-new and still incredibly expansive and beautiful. I don’t want to give too much away, but there’s a twist almost immediately that sort of lets you know this isn’t going to sit back and go on the same old path you think it will. The story solution they used for saving and loading is really clever, too. It really feels like it could be an official game in the series.
UNDERSWAP by Team Switched & UNDERFELL by @underfellfangame Fangames of the two “big” UNDERTALE AUs! Even though I’m not normally an AU person these look professionally done and polished to a shine, and have incredible soundtracks to boot. They have a gameplay video and short demo out respectively.
MISC
@undertalescenery UNDERTALE is home to such beautiful and amazing environments, and this blog is homage to all of them, using photos of real places that resemble the places underground to create an archive of absolutely gorgeous scenery and kickass aesthetic posts. (Well, usually real places and usually photos; artwork and CGI from movies creeps in too, but that is far from a bad thing, it’s all amazing.) They also do aesthetic posts for different characters, and they even take requests! This is one of my all-time favorite UNDERTALE blogs. It breathes such amazing new life and realism to the base the game set down for us.
@undertalepositivityproject This is a really awesome blog where you can anonymously send in positivity for someone you like or admire! (I have gotten some twice and both times I died a little.) The blogrunner is an absolute angel and puts a lot of work into it, all for the sake of more nice feelings and less bickering. If anybody deserves a shoutout, it’s this blog.
@undertale-encyclopedia A blog that aims to capture a screencap of every little bit of dialogue in the game, from the regular stuff to the phone calls to the various flavor text. Nothing is too insignificant to archive! I love this blog’s attention to detail, and it’s nice to have this stuff float by on my dash. Similarly, this site has a lot of data-mined information from the game, from the dialogue tree of every possible neutral ending to a list of FUN events to files of the strings/sprites/etc you can download (which I absolutely did). Both of these are great resources!
@outtathevoid & @reunitedskeletons An ask blog for a Dadster returned to his sons; the first URL was the old location, where you can dig through the archives from before the move. Dadster is one of my favorite headcanons and this blog does such lovely art! Recently Gaster has also acquired a galaxy cape, which is super cool.
@eggalovania I can’t believe I almost forgot this one. Every day a picture of Sans as an egg. That’s it. What else could you need to know? (I’ve, uh, “laid” a guest egg there, myself.)
GENERAL RECS
Here are some places where there’s a lot of assorted stuff gathered together, mostly from my main/personal/reblog spam blog. It’s too much to rec bit by bit, this post is already beyond huge, but if you’re willing to sift a little bit here is EVEN MORE STUFF for you to enjoy!
I keep a HUGE YouTube playlist of UNDERTALE animations—at the time of writing it’s closing on 100 videos. I love animations a lot. Like, a lot. Some of my favorites that didn’t make this main list are: Undyne the Undying, Death By Glamour, Flowey’s Transformation (Strelok from above resounded this as well), Stronger Than You, Last Tale Home, Home, Timelapse, ECHO, Bad Apple!, and Rollingtale. (What? I have a lot of favs. I love a lot of stuff!) I also have a tag for animations (mostly gifs) on my main.
Along with animations, I also love hearing people do voice acting for this game, so there’s also a playlist I keep on YouTube of my favorite comic dubs, including plenty of the comics/dubs I’ve already mentioned in this rec post. And again, a voice acting tag on my main, which is PACKED with talented people doing awesome things.
I don’t read a lot of UNDERTALE fic (mostly because I’m picky and backpedal at the first hint of non-canon shipping), but when I do I bookmark the good stuff on AO3. Here’s the link to those with the UNDERTALE filter on. (I mean, I guess you can sift through and look at the ones from my other fandoms too if you really want? But PLEASE be aware they won’t all be SFW.)
There’s also a meta tag on my main. I couldn’t possibly write up a rec for every cool meta I’ve ever read or even every meta blog I like, but there’s a lot of great work and theories in here.
If you prefer short/oneshot comics, you’ll find a metric ton of them on the comics tag on my main. And of course quite a few reblogged updates from the long-running ones, too.
I have a tag just for music on my main too. My Thursday art stream crew can testify that I love my tunes; right now I have multiple hundreds of remixes sitting on my HD. There’s some rambling about MY FEELINGS in the tag, but mostly it’s mixes, and the artists that pop up often are typically my faves. I also post “one-track” mixes on my 8tracks (as in, the entire mix is just different remixes of the same song) because it’s the most efficient way to listen to my library in the car and rec the stuff to other people. There’s almost two dozen of those at the time of writing and I’m always taking requests for more! Finally, @undertalefanmusic is a wonderfully organized archive of UNDERTALE fanmusic, where you can look it up by song or character.
And to wrap things up, few more misc links from my main: a tag for badass Papyrus/Papyrus with Gaster Blasters, a tag for Sans and Papyrus fighting together, a tag for the fallen human children, and a tag for my own UNDERTALE scenery reblogs. I also play a little “Where’s Waldo?” type game with my art (including this comic!) where I hide Gaster instead, and the masterlist of his hiding spots is here. And finally, there is also BOSS RUSH, a mini-comic I did in June that is technically canon-compliant and so is also REFUSE-compliant! It’s not my best work, my skills as an artist have grown a LOT since then, but I did work hard on it and learn a lot all the same, so it’ll always be close to my heart. :’)
And that’s all! Whew, finally! This post is super long and took AGES to do, but like I said, I’ve been wanting to do it forever, so I really hope you enjoy some of these things. Remember, when you get done with them, come find me so we can yell about ‘em together!
