One Of The Main Issues With The Internet Is The Amplifying Effect It Has On Extremism. No Matter How
One of the main issues with the internet is the amplifying effect it has on extremism. No matter how many normal people are in the world, they're a very quiet majority. It's those who feel strongly about things that speak up, that make themselves known, that attract attention.
And that's so, so true even in real life. Think of all the people you pass on the street who don't even notice you, who don't care what you are or how you feel. Then think of how many loud people you see that make a scene.
This is probably common knowledge for a lot of you
But now, imagine what someone who is terminally online sees. Do they see any of that silent majority? No. All they are shown is the poles, the far ends home to the loudest voices.
And that's what causes a lot of these far-right surges among the youth. They're trapped online because the world outside is increasingly hostile to unplanned interactions, and so they're force fed two extremes. One that tells them it's bad to be white, the world is doomed and that they have to give up their happiness for reasons they simply won't understand in their early teenage years.
And another extreme that promises a better world where they can live like kings. Where all the problems are for someone else to deal with, and where life is just a matter of doing simple things for huge rewards.
So please, show some understanding to these people. A lot of them simply don't have any idea what the true majority is like, or how normal people act and think. Instead of presenting a cold, harsh reality of the current world, or pushing them away for having a conflicting idea, *talk* to them.
Give them information about the world in a digestible manner, give them something to be hopeful about, and treat them with respect without putting adult expectations on them. It works wonders when people feel understood and appreciated by others, and it will help combat the current radicalisation of the youth
