I mean, I don't claim to speak for the whole group, but I think I'm allowed to say "as a trans guy etc" because well, I am one. My experience isn't any less valuable just because I'm in the minority. I'm not saying "as the representative of all trans men" or something, I'm talking for me. I wasn't trying to speak over anyone or pretend that there aren't people who are worse off than me. Idk man, I just felt left out of the conversation so I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring. People talking about trans men as a group is inevitably talking about me as well, and tbh it bothers me sometimes when I feel as if I am ignored. I label my posts (or at least try to) with a "not everyone is like this" thingie, so I wish some people wrote "the majority" instead of talking about trans men as if they're talking about all of us. I realise now I'm making a big deal, but idk, it rubs annoys me that sometimes not only do my positive experiences get dismissed, but my negative ones do as well because they maybe aren't the most common or the most vocal like how in my experience cis women and people in lgbt groups treat me worse than cishet men.
In hindsight I probably should have phrased the above statement differently like "as a trans guy some of this is just straight up wrong ime" or something, cos it's def not wrong in general for everyone as you said above. I didn't mean to come off as "no lol those issues don't exist because I'm not effected by some of them/ they effect me in a different way/ I have some different issues". I don't regret making the original reply/ reblog thing because I'm an asshat who like talking about himself and I think my experience has value, but perhaps I phrased some things badly. The original post isn't wrong, it's just not a universal experience. But like you said, doesn't mean it's wrong.
I'm not trying to pretend transphobia or transphobia specific to trans men or whatever doesn't exist. I mean, I have to denounce my original citizenship at some point probably because I'm changing my sex medically but my country of origin doesn't let me change my legal sex to male. I'm at least lucky enough not to reside there anymore ig, but this has gone off on more of a rant than I intended for it to so I'll stop.
(I wanna specify before anything else that I’m a trans woman, and that my intention here isn’t to talk over trans men, but rather to lend them my voice in bringing attention to an issue. I don’t speak for trans men.)
Just another reminder that if your queer spaces aren’t radically inclusive of trans men, those spaces fail as a queer space.
And this shouldn’t be a controversial statement.
What the hell have we been fighting for all this time if we’re not fighting for our whole community?
Some of y’all just wanna hate guys so damn much that you skip right over the nuances of why that’s maybe not great. Half of leftist spaces just took “guys make me uncomfortable and male privilege can make people act in really shitty ways” and turned it into “actually, men are scum, and that includes men that are marginalized. Hate is okay when it’s us doing it!”
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.
Trans. Guys. Don’t. Have. Male. Privilege.
Cis men aren’t gonna flock to excuse, like, everything a trans guy does, like they do for cis guys.
A lot of rhetoric STILL defines masculinity by inherently cis standards (and toxic masculine standards as well), in ways that will ALWAYS put trans guys at a disadvantage.
Cis guys tend to treat trans men as women. They just… do. Because they’re transphobic and shitty about it.
Trans guys ARE marginalized and do experience discrimination that’s an intersection of transphobia, and unique issues that only really apply to trans guys in that way.
That’s why the term ‘transandrophobia’ or ‘transmisandry’ is a term that’s important within the community. Just like we experience transmisogyny, trans guys experience transandrophobia/transmisandry and a lot of y’all just wanna ignore that to say “but I’m less privileged than you.”
Please, for once, stop trying to win this ridiculous game of most-oppressed-olympics. A future where we get equality for us by throwing trans guys to the wolves… that should horrify you. That’s the same exact thing cis gays and cis lesbians have been doing to the ENTIRE trans community for years. I’m real uncomfortable with how many of you were willing to mimic that behavior once you were on the other side of it.
We make it through as a community, as a FAMILY, or not at all.
