Legends and myths about trees
Legendary tree deities (13)
Kodama – Tree spirits in Japan
Kodama are spirits in Japanese folklore that inhabit trees ,or the tree itself, or the soul of the tree.
They can take on a variety of forms, including old trees, monstrous fires, beasts and humanoid figures.
It is said that if you try to cut down a tree inhabited by a tree spirit, you will be cursed.
The phenomenon known as yamabiko, when sounds make a delayed echoing effect in mountains and valleys, is sometimes attributed to this kind of spirit and may also be referred to as “kodama”.
Since ancient times, their existence was reported from the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters) as ‘Ko-Tama’, and in some areas they are still the object of tree spirit worship.
It is quite interesting to find that legends from ancient times in Japan have much in common with the lore of the Greek mythology of the Dryads (Ref) and the Echo (Ref2).
