Guilt filled protection

The events of thunder bringer except making it with more angst.

Eurylochus stands there ready to accept his death knowing there was nothing he should or could do to stop it. At least he is until he notices the crew drawing their weapons and charging at Odysseus. His body starts moving before he can fully understand, running towards Odysseus, as time seems to slow.

He remembers the anguish in his friends eyes after getting stabbed during the mutiny, the betrayal as he held his hand up to the wound. No he can't let that happen again. He may have led the mutiny but he never wanted someone to stab him. The fear and guilt he felt as his brother fell to the deck was overwhelming.

If anyone deserves to be attacked it should be him after all he is the one that killed the cow, he is the one to open the wind bag. He manages to make it in front of Odysseus just in time for a sword to imbed itself in his chest. He chokes on blood as the pain hits. The crew mate looks horrified as they back away pulling the sword with them.

Eurylochus falls to his knees and coughs up blood onto the deck. The heavy rain leaves him soaked and shivering as he feels tears fall and mix with the puddles on deck. He can see Odysseus reaching out towards him with desperate and broken eyes, eyes that know he would never be able to stop death. He forces his last words out through the pain.

"I'm...sorry...Ody..."

"EURYLOCHUS NO!"

A bright flash of light sears itself into his eyes before the pain hits as he chokes on a scream. After that the pain fades, his nerves fried beyond use, as he starts sinking into the ocean depths. At least for once he has managed to save someone, for once he didn't fail his brother. His eyes close and he dies with a faint smile on his face
