Dean and Cas are at a rock-bottom point in their relationship in this episode - Cas is deceiving him and doing awful things behind his back, the full extent of which won't be revealed until towards the end of the season; Dean is frustrated with Cas's new evasiveness and unavailability while, as yet, refusing to doubt his motives for a second because they're... Well, what are they? Neither of them could tell you at this point. Neither of them would want to try.

Then they do this - this moment of absolute connection that stills and grounds them both for a moment in the middle of that ugly, unfolding storyline and all its conflict. It briefly cancels out Dean's anger and Cas's impatience with him. They each stand in awe of the other's ability to affect them so deeply by doing and saying so little - they both wish things were better between them but do they get that they miss each other? They both resent the other's lack of understanding about the separate difficulties they're facing. But they pause and have this conversation, quietly, and Cas chooses to refill Dean's glass like a peace offering to dilute Dean's hostility. It works - the gesture, the unexpected approach. This is intimacy and raw chemistry between two characters who don't know the first thing about how to handle it.

Slash fanwriters used to dream about shows giving us raw material like this to work with, while we were creating epic love stories out of a vague sense of incompleteness combined with that one, weird half-glance between character Y and character Z in episode nineteen of season four. We built on what wasn't said or shown - on something that was missing from the emotional landscape of the canon. Now I'm watching a show do this in HD and leave it complicated and messy and open to every interpretation. Holy COW.

Supernatural fanfic

I had my first browse for Supernatural-flavoured fanfiction over the past couple of days. I don't know why I'm surprised to find that so much of it is out-of-universe-AU: coffee shop, college, high school setting and so on. 'Uber' fic as we called it in ye olden days.

I guess the canon timeline of the show doesn't actually leave much wiggle room for bigger fanfic storylines to drop in out of nowhere and fit nicely as canon-compliant works. It's ideal for absorbing character oneshots, reaction stories, fix-its, and PWP style smut, short works that fill short spaces of time, but the central characters are crazy busy for all those seasons. I'd have to think pretty hard to find a good spot to insert a character-rich and canon-compliant first time smut wallow, for example.

Look at the sheer number of Supernatural fanworks on AO3 though. That's incredible.

I'd love to! My energy levels are pitiful at the moment, limiting my computer time a lot, but curiosity about the fanfiction potential was a big part of why I saved Supernatural for a proper binge watch-through and avoided the spoilers all that time.

Castiel's the obvious choice of character for me and my writer quirks, and he's all about the Dean from the moment they meet, so yeah. I hope I can manage some writing once I finish processing what I just saw.

I did try some smutty scribbles set during season eight or nine, trying out the slash vibe for size, and I got a brainworm about Naomi's part in things that won't go away.

I need Sam to complain about having to be the one who recites the exorcism, why do I always have to do it, can’t you memorize it, and Dean laughs and says you’re the geek here, that’s why it’s your job, I do the fighting and you do the Latinating, and Sam says yeah, big talk, I know you just don’t want to say it because it hurts, stop being such a wuss about it and take your turn, and Dean says what do you mean it hurts and Sam says you know, the way it makes your throat and mouth burn and Dean says what the fuck, Sam, what are you talking about and then they both just… oh.
