okay one last thing and that i need to stop projecting on this poor sweet girl fr but i think. laura lee loves her friends and they're a kind of family but like when she really takes a step back and looks? she's not that close with them and that's just the high school varsity team experience babey

i do think like. laura lee is incredibly lonely in the teenager way but in lots of other ways as well? she takes the role of caretaker in her home, which pushes her away from her sisters because she has to be stricter with them and therefore more distant. catholicism places respect for your parents above all, and her parents are in turn strict with her, so she's not friend close with them, either. while she is close with her team and likes them, she knows that it's not mutual and she's generally judged because of her faith, though she tries her best not to focus on it because she knows they don't understand it like she does and knows that they're just like. teenage girls. she knows the way that she acts in accordance with her faith is also not very typical behavior of a teenager, and while she rebels in small ways when she's with the yellowjackets, she doesn't care for parties or anything like that, nor does she enjoy rebelling in the slightest. if she sneaks out, it's only when she thinks she has to because it's important for the team, and it's never an effort done by herself or without persuasion. and part of that is because she is so lonely and if the people she considers to be her friends are asking her to spend time with them, she really, really wants to do it.

laura lee is actually very timid to a fault when she’s not with her friends, and it takes a while for her to warm up to people. she’s very much someone that sticks to the background and just smiles at jokes or stories, very rarely participates in discussion as a whole. the only time you could get her to talk to a stranger at length is when she’s nervous and rambling or when someone else is in danger/needs her to.
