(Hecking TRUE! Tbh the neo stuff would have fit better in the expansion as opposed to hero mode. S1 Octoling stuff looked better with their environment after all.)

I mean, them wearing engineer boots make sense, to me at least? What's stopping the boots from being both after all? Not to mention I have no doubt in my mind that at least all octoling soldiers have some engineering experience under their belts. With their society more or less falling apart, I'd want soldiers that can do on the spot repair work as well.

man idk how to explain this without deep diving into design principal so here we go i guess

the boots wouldnt be a problem if it werent for two things

1) the absolute lack of detail. theyre just these black blocks with some straps on them. in real life engineer boots still have stitch lines showing where the pieces go together. in any other game this might be ok, but splatoon puts a huge emphasis on showing the details on clothing, so they stick out! even agent 8s boots have a zipper and stitch lines(?)

2) the rest of the design also lacks detail, which yeah so did the original one, but it made up for that with variation in color. look at this

so again, the first one ends up looking aesthetically similar to the world around it, while the second is just….sleek? which doesnt fit in the world around it. maybe it would if they changed other octarians to show a change in technology, but thats not what happened
