ART 121-01, week #11 (I have to have these done by 11:30, uh oh)

HAHAHA, okay so.

Let's see what I can talk about relating to Graphic Design.

Well, the last couple of weeks we had to work on our stamps- which had to feature a chosen letter looking all cool and nifty. A linoleum block is very hard to carve into. Really, at first I thought it was old, and it hardened over time? But no- it is that hard. So at first your carving tool is going smooth but if you push to hard it may go skipping upward over areas you didn't want it to. Much care is required. Also, the wooden base that we could rest it on was wonderful- and dont ever try to do this kind of carving without it. It kept everything solid and it lessened the slipping significantly. You should also make sure the blades are sharpened because otherwise it makes the linoleum grainy and little dried looking flecks come cracking out and it's really ugly. Also, make sure whether the line is thin or thick, to cut deep. Not very deep, because if ink got up inside, it would be difficult to clean out- but not so shallow that any ink rolled over the design might rest in it and erase the line easily.

Also, my laptop is driving me nuts. When I type I get maybe three words in and then the lag catches up but it makes me nervous. Stop being slow!Maybe I should clean it or delete cookies or whatever. I am not a computer person..

ART 121-01, Week #10 (Oh, hey not shabby.)

HAHA, I lied my final logo was indeed shabby.

But intentionally?

I might post a picture later, but pretty much it was the word "GrassHoppers" made to look a little like a grasshopper and then small letters for "Ugandan Bar & Grill". The words were white, but the outline was green, and the background looked like a sunset, done in colored pencil. Out of our group, I feel that Jeremy's was the best, but we all did well.

Everyone had cool names, but "Crimson Lily" was my favorite. Sounds like a fancy hole in the wall. Can holes in walls be fancy? I think so. Precious gems.

Anyway, we were given an idea for our final for the class. I believe this class was the one that was the letter block? Like, we have to carve out a letter out of linoleum. I could be wrong- I sort of mistake the two classes for each other. The other final project was a manifesto. As long as I have both done by Monday and carry them around with me I can't go wrong.

It is bitingly cold out.

Full size here. This is a sort of blanket response to the questions I get this time every year about what various Lackadaisy characters would wear for Halloween.

I thought of dressing them up as early 20th Century icons and people of historical relevance - you know, something vaguely intellectual - but then I got distracted by the amazing, abominable craft-work concoctions pictured up top.  Well, I couldn’t not draw that.

(The topmost images are mostly from Dennison’s Bogie Books of the 1920s.  They’re a hoot.) Happy Halloween, everyone!
