𝐒𝐘𝐍𝐎𝐏𝐒𝐈𝐒: tsu'teys love for you was unexpected... almost as unexpected as your sudden decision to leave pandora to return back to earth; a decision that left tsu'tey heartbroken and desperate to remind himself that you were not just a fleeting memory. tsu'tey hadn't been back to the lab in months.

months.

he downright refused to pass through the threshold of the place that you used to wander with a cup of tea in your hand and a pen behind your ear. the place where you would stay up until the early hours of the morning; papers scattered across your desk and your research journal in hand.

he didn't want to be reminded of the emptiness that now filled the space instead of your infectious laugh. he wouldn't even entertain the idea.

that was, until jake approached him one evening with a sad smile on his face.

'they found somethin'... while they were cleanin' out her desk...' jake trailed off as tsu'tey looked at him with empty eyes.

ever since your parents were called back to earth to carry out vital research and you had made the unexpected and heartbreaking decision to return home with them, tsu'tey had become a shell of a man. he no longer had the motivation to be the fearless warrior he once was; no longer had the heart to tease and give jake a hard time like he once did. he was a ghost. a consequence of your intertwined paths.

'hm.' tsu'tey simply mumbled to jake as he continued to stare at him with a vacant expression. jake furrowed his brows and took a step closer to the warrior, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

'brother, i... think you'll wanna see what they found.' he whispered as a small, sympathetic smile tugged at his lips. 'trust me.'

so, he did.

he trusted jake and followed him through the forest and towards the lab.

it was only when the lab came into view through the treeline that tsu'tey felt something other than the numbness that had become so familiar to him. he felt heartbreak. he stopped in his tracks as he leaned against a tree, looking to the building where the two of you had created so many memories.

the building where the two of you had met for the first time, when you had offered him a handshake that he refused.

the building where the two of you argued relentlessly and you had once thrown a sample tube at his head, causing him to storm off in anger.

the building where the two of you finally gave each other a chance and got to know each other.

the building where he realised there was more to you than being just another demon in a false body.

this was the building where he watched you while you worked, as the terrifying realisation that he had fallen in love with you creeped up on him like a predator in the night.

jake let out a deep breath as he turned back to his friend and offered him an encouraging nod of his head.

'c'mon.' he sighed as he lead tsu'tey towards the steps of the lab, occasionally glancing over his shoulder to make sure that he was still following.

jake forced open the airlock doors before standing aside and turning to the warrior. tsu'tey walked in, his eyes glancing around the lab as he bit the inside of his cheek; his heart feeling heavy in his chest and his legs feeling weak. it was almost as though he could still smell your perfume, as if it lingered in the air.

his eyes drifted to your desk in the corner of the lab. the desk that he would often find you asleep at after a long night of research, was now empty, as if you were never even there. he turned to jake with an irritated expression, as he tried to mask his pain.

'show me and get it over with.' he muttered, his eyes now fixated on the forest that could be seen from the small window. jake nodded anxiously as he walked over to your old desk, opening the drawer before pulling out a laptop and placing it on the surface. he motioned to the chair as tsu'tey hesitated, looking at jake suspiciously.

'you're gonna be here a while.' jake whispered with a hint of melancholy evident in his husky tone. tsu'tey narrowed his eyes at jake for a moment before he shifted his gaze to the laptop, which was now switched on. he walked over to the desk and cautiously sat down in the chair, looking at the black screen.

'what is this?' he questioned, his tone flat. jake placed a hand on his shoulder and let out a deep breath.

'i'm gonna go.' jake murmed. 'just... press this button when you're ready.' he pointed to the spacebar on the device before patting tsu'tey on the back and walking back towards the airlock doors. he glanced back at him one last time before nodding sadly and closing the door behind him, leaving tsu'tey alone.

tsu'tey blinked back at the empty space where jake was just standing before looking down at the screen. his heart ached as he noticed the finger marks on the corner of the device; your finger marks.

tears threatened his eyes as he slowly brought his hand up to the screen, placing his fingertip to evidence of your own. his eyes squeezed shut and he let out a shaky breath, leaning back in the chair as he tried to fight the pain that plagued his heart. he shook his head and opened his eyes, looking down at the blank screen. he reached out his hand and pressed down on the spacebar.

the screen lit up the room as the video began to play.

'okay, so... it's 2:42PM on the 11th of october 2152 and... i'm getting my avatar today!' your enthusiastic voice filled tsu'teys ears as his blood ran cold.

his eyes were wide as he looked to the screen. he reached out a shaky hand, his fingertips tracing the memory of you, and he felt his heart shatter all over again.

you were right there in front of him, but he was unable to feel you. unable to tell you how much he missed you; how much his soul yearned to be close to you once more.

'yawne...' he whispered as tears began to pool in his eyes.

'i'm so excited.' your smiling face stared back at him as the laugh that he fell in love with escaped your lips. 'jake got his avatar a while ago, so he said he's gonna show me the ropes. next time you see me, i'm gonna look a little different.' you tease before winking towards the camera and shutting it off.

the screen goes black and tsu'tey desperately leans towards the laptop; a sob caught in the back at his throat as he frantically wishes to be blessed with the image of your face again. a few moments later the screen lights up once again.

'this is crazy.' you whisper as you position the camera and take a few steps away, looking at yourself in the lcd screen with wide eyes. your hands run over your tall silhouette as you pose and turn, taking in the sight of your avatar. 'i look like me... but i don't look like me.'

tsu'tey brings his hand up to his jaw, trying to fight back the tears as he watches the reminiscence of the woman he fell in love with.

he sat through hours of footage.

hours of listening to you rambling about your thoughts; adjusting to your new body and the planet that you that was now safer for you to explore. he found himself smiling and laughing to himself as you stumbled around and let every thought that entered your brain roll of your tongue with excitement, but he also found himself crying as he longed to pull you close to him; to smell your scent as he ran his fingers through your hair and kissed your skin.

he continued to watch the video logs all through the night and into the morning; until his eyes stung and the morning sun lit up the lab.

'that is tsu'tey.' you whisper as you pan to the warrior who was training with jake in the forest. the camera zooms in, filming the two of them as they shot arrows into a nearby target. you then focus the camera back to you, moving to sit down by a nearby tree. 'he's not as grumpy as he looks.' you laugh and scrunch your nose. 'actually... yeah, he is.'

tsu'tey let out a soft chuckle as he listens to you speak about him with the intention for him to never hear. he felt his heart flutter in his chest, watching your gaze drift from the camera to him.

'he wasn't very welcoming to begin with... but he's been helping us train. maybe i'll actually have a shot here... on this planet.' you whisper, looking back to the camera.

your words stung tsu'tey. you were so excited for your future on pandora and what that future would hold, which is why the wound ran so deep when you left him to return to earth.

tsu'tey smiled sadly at the screen as he watched the footage; he remembered that day. and, he remembered what was coming next.

'you humans.' tsu'teys tsk could be heard in the background of the footage, before you turn the camera towards him. he looks into the lens with a scowl before motioning angrily to it. 'enough of this... thing. shoot!' he shouts as he points to your bow which is discarded on the ground beside you. you turn the camera back to yourself and roll your eyes.

'back to work, i guess.' you laugh, standing up.

'do not roll your eyes at me.' tsu'tey mutters in the background as you pull a funny face to the camera and turn it off.

'i would kill jake for a bag of takis right now.' you moan hungrily to yourself as you sit at your desk in your human form. tsu'tey is sat behind you with a puzzled expression.

'what is this... takis?' he asks you with a tilt of his head.

tsu'tey laughed gently to himself as he continued to watch the collection of videos that contained hours of footage showing the progression of your relationship. once the two of you had put your differences aside, you actually began to enjoy each other’s company and opted to spend a lot of your free time together.

'food. good food.' you sigh, turning to tsu'tey in your chair.

'we have good food...' tsu'tey mumbles, crossing his arms over his chest as you roll your eyes.

'you don't have to be so serious all the time. lighten up!' you tease him, but your attention is pulled from tsu'tey as someone enters the lab. your eyes drift to the other side of the room as one of the other scientists begins to talk to you, but tsu'teys gaze stays fixated on you. a small smile tugs at his lips as he watches you; forgetting that the camera was still filming.

tsu'tey now watched with a solemn expression; he missed having these seemingly pointless conversations with you. if he knew at the time that one day, he would no longer be able to hear your trivial thoughts, he would have listened to you talk about takis for hours.

'look at how amazing this is.' you whisper as the camera pans around the hometree during a celebration. there are many clan members dancing and having fun as your gentle laugh can be heard behind the camera. you zoom in on tsu'tey and jake who are sitting on a log, drinking and talking.

tsu'tey remembers this night, but he was now seeing it in a new light.

the camera pans to tsu'tey as he takes a sip of his drink and notices the camera. he looks at the lens with a playful annoyance, and turns away shortly after. you laugh and turn the camera to yourself, but you continue to look at tsu'tey with a soft smile.

'he's actually pretty great.' your smile shines as you sit on the ground, but your expression soon falls. you sigh to yourself and stay silent for a moment.

tsu'tey looked at the screen curiously, taking in your thoughtful expression and waiting for you to speak.

'it's weird.' you whisper as you lean back against a log. 'i'm actually really beginning to love this place.' as you speak, your eyes don't leave tsu'tey who is still sitting with jake in the distance. you laugh and look to the ground with a shake of your head, before looking into the lens. 'y'know when people talk about soulmates?' you ask to no one. 'i wonder if it's possible that... your soulmate is somewhere far, far away...' you trail off as your gaze drifts back to tsu'tey. 'like... a different planet.'

tsu'teys eyes widened at your words as he reached out and traced your face through the screen with his fingertips. he could see the love in your eyes; and he was in disbelief that he didn't see it in that moment.

'c'mon! why are you sittin' over there on your own?!' jakes voice calls out as his footsteps can be heard getting closer to the camera. the camera is suddenly pried from your hands as he takes center screen with a fangy smile. 'oh, hey video log.' he chuckles as you try to swipe the camera back.

'jake, give it back!' you shout as the camera shakes from his attempts to keep it from you.

'why? spillin' all your secrets?' he teases as the camera is once again stolen; but now tsu'tey is on the screen.

'do not tease her.' he warns as he looks to the camera with a curious expression, before handing it back to you.

'thanks, tsu'tey.' you mutter before quickly shutting the camera off.

'...and i finally caught a fish today!' you beam excitedly to the camera as you and tsu'tey sit on the steps of the lab. your avatar is scratched up from your day in the forest, but your spirits are high.

'you are learning well.' tsu'tey praises you with a nod of his head. you send him a soft smile before turning your attention back to the camera.

'you heard that, right?' i ask the camera with feigned shock. 'he's actually being nice to me.' tsu'tey nudges your shoulder and rolls his eyes.

'do not get used to it.' he mumbles before the two of you lock eyes and laugh together.

'whatever.' you tease as you wink at the camera. 'okay, that's the log for the day. over and out!' you attempt to switch the camera off, but you unknowingly miss the button and place the camera down on the steps with the lens facing towards the two of you; neither of you noticing the blinking red button.

tsu'tey leaned forward as his heart skipped a beat; his mouth falling open.

'this... this moment was documented?' he whispered to himself as his heart began to race. he remembered what followed this interaction; and he remembered it well.

'you truly do not think that i am nice to you?' tsu'tey asks with a tilt of his head, looking at you with soft eyes. you smile at the ground as you shake your head.

'no, i do.' you whisper.

'ah... so your lies were all for the camera?' he teases, bumping your shoulder with his own. the sun is setting on pandora as the two of you look out to the vibrant sky above the lab. tsu'teys fingers twitch slightly as his eyes drift to you; watching the sky with a soft smile. he hesitates, before whispering softly to you. 'do you feel as though you have found your home here?'

your eyes shift from the sky to tsu'tey, who is watching you expectantly.

tsu'tey continued to watch the footage with wide eyes, as if he was reliving this moment for the first time. his heart fluttered wildly in his chest and his face was mere inches from the screen.

a soft smile tugs as your lips as you meet tsu'teys gaze.

'i do...' you say to him as you both look to each other in a short, comfortable silence.

'well... i am glad.' he whispers once again as he raises his hand and softly moves a piece of hair from your face. his hand lingers as you look to his lips, to his eyes and then back to his lips. the two of you remain like that for a few moments before tsu'tey reaches forward and pulls you towards him by your waist.

'you are?' you ask in a breathy whisper as he nods his head and brings his face closer to yours.

'i am...' he breathes before he captures your lips with his and pulls you onto his lap. you wrap your arms around his shoulders as he wraps his own arms around your waist; the two of you kissing each other with months of hidden feelings.

tsu'tey slammed the laptop shut and pushed himself from the chair before he fell against the wall of the lab. he clutched at his chest, choking back a pleading sob. an eerie silence fell on the lab, as though he had been pulled back into reality and forced to face the truth of the situation.

you were gone.

you were both, once again, worlds apart. out of reach from each other as his soul desperately called out to you.

the footage served as a reminder.

a reminder that you weren't just a fleeting dream.

a reminder that you were real.

a reminder that the two of you shared arguments and laughter.

a reminder that you shared longing looks and harboured love for one another within your very veins.

but, it also served as a reminder that you were gone.

you were no longer there for tsu'tey to leave kisses along your skin as you sat by the river during sunrise. you were no longer there for him to hold as he traced patterns into your skin with his fingertips, while the two of you watched the setting sun. you were no longer there to dance with him by the fire during celebrations, as the rest of the clan watched you both with adoring eyes.

you were gone.

and there was nothing that he could do.
