Can you elaborate on this please, I feel like it's such a crazy take but also maybe correct?

okay so, i remember reading an interview keke gave after nico won the championship (maybe even the "my championship doesn't matter anymore, only nico's does" interview) and in it keke said that he was always trying to support nico and let him know that he believed in him. and so he texted nico "push" to let him know that.

and it was like an epiphany for me. because i'd read that exact story before from nico's perspective and it was so different. it was like nico thought of the message as criticism, that he wasn't doing enough to win the championship, that he needed to do more or work harder.

then i thought of the interview nico did before his second ever race, where the interviewer told him that keke said his first race (where he scored points and set the fastest lap) was "not bad for a kid" and nico's face falls. he was so crushed because he automatically assumed that his dad meant it negatively, and the journalist had to tell him that it was meant as a joke/playfully.

nico and keke also did an interview in 2018 after they did demonstration runs at monaco in their championship winning cars (still the only father and son pairing ever to both win monaco), and they were asked which of them was better. nico's immediate response was "i don't want to compare us/i don't want to think of it like that". keke's response, which i personally think is more accurate was "you can't compare them because the cars and eras were so different". his response was about formula 1, nico's was about them as father and son.

there are other stories where keke supposedly criticised nico's first podium in australia 2008, thinking that he could have got 2nd not 3rd, but now i'm wondering if it was actual criticism or something that he thought of as praise and nico took badly because, as he's said before, his mind tends to go to the negative before the positive. there's also the fact that talk about f1 was banned in the rosberg house (at least between nico, keke, and sina) for basically all of nico's career, so it does seem like it was something of a sensitive topic in their household.

nico's said several times that he really struggled with the pressure of being in f1 throughout his career, that he didn't believe in himself at all, and that the comparisons to his father were really really difficult for him. so maybe it's not so much that he didn't realise how much keke loved him, maybe it's more that he was automatically negative about himself and therefore projected that negativity onto keke's reactions.

because when you look at keke, i think he really is proud. he is the only world champion who has ever seen his son become a world champion. he has an experience that no one else has, and i think he recognises that, but even if nico weren't a world champion, i think he would still be proud
