They were dangerous hands—hands of a prizefighter—and yet, as Alonzo sacrificed his kneecaps to concrete in front of Pancamo, he knew by the swell of flesh under his mouth and by the blurry look in Chucky’s eyes, that he’d gotten him good. Heavyweight champion though he might have been in whatever funny little corner of the city he hailed from, he was no match for the King of the night; he slumped against the wall like all the challengers before him while Alonzo rose to his feet, towering over him and wiping the corner of his mouth.

“Jesus, what was that, huh?” Chucky slurred.

Alonzo watched as he raised one of those powerful hands to his forehead to wipe sweat from his forehead.

“A perk, Chucky,” he said, leaning over and kissing the man’s pockmarked cheek.

Destiny had Chucky blinking like a marionette doll, slow and slave to the tilt of his head, and when Alonzo laughed, Chucky followed suit.
