Hi, saw you reblogged the thing about it being okay to send asks about your fics, and I'm curious as to what inspired you to write Suzanne/Tessie if you feel like talking about it? (They hadn't occurred to me, but it's interesting to think about them, given that we didn't get much about Tessie especially.)

Hello, I don't mind talking about it!

The short answer is that my brain is weird and that I over analyzed the hell out of one scene.

I have this tendency to fixate on the dead or absentee females (the "dead wife" for example) in shows, for what ever reason... so Tessie was already kind of in my brain from that first flashback of her.

And then Suzanne showed up, and I really liked her character despite Ryan not being one of my favorites. (I like his character, I just like other charcters more) And then there was this scene in at the end of season 5, episode 5 were the O'Reily family has a meeting about getting Cyril a lawyer.

In it Suzanne mentions that Seamus and Tessie didn't wait very long to get together after Suzanne left, which in my mind sounded like she was aware of Tessie...and she seemed shocked and upset when Seamus told her just how long he had been seeing Tessie. The whole scene was tense and kind of bitter in a way that probably was to show that Suzanne and Ryan had been talking and that at one point they had been a family.

But, to my ears, Suzanne also sounded a bit jealous??? So my brain went into "what if" mode: what if they had been friends, which makes this whole situation messier (and therfore more fun!), what if Tessie getting with Seamus had nothing to do with him but instead was about Suzanne, what if Suzanne coming back was more about Tessie then about Ryan, what if they had been girlfriends?!?!?!

And well things spiraled from there 🤪

And there were no fics for it, so I tried my hand at writing! That was the first creative writing I've done since high school, which was a long time ago! But it was fun so!!

I kinda like this messy pairing, so I think that I'm going to continue with it for a while! 😆

"I'm pretty sure that wasn't supposed to happen," Gloria states once Shannon drops her vice like grip on her hand; she's marched them into a stair way, away from the hospital ward and away from prying eyes.

The plan had been to drive O'Reily crazy by pretending to date each other - it had been the only ethical plan they could come up with to get their revenge on him - and for the past few months it had been going well.

But Gloria wasn't supposed to look forward to meeting up with Shannon O'Reily, wasn't supposed to miss her company when she was gone and she certainty wasn't supposed to "accidentally" brush hands with her whenever they were close.

And Shannon wasn't supposed to kiss her - like she was dying and only Gloria could save her - in the middle of the hospital ward, in front of her colleagues and patients; Tim and O'Reily had made the most beautiful choking noise that she should actually look into when she gets back - but not right now - right now she feels giddy and warm in ways she hasn't in years.

Didn't matter if the people were happy, sad, angry or nervous to be there - all that mattered was that there were people in that room.

And this wasn't something that Eduardo Alvarez let himself indulge in often, but every once in a while he would wander into the visitation room and watch the different people filter in and out. Sometimes he lets himself pretend that some of these people are here to visit him; that somewhere in the crowd are his wife and daughter - probably wouldn't recognize them even if they did come, it had been years since he last saw either of them.

Still it's nice to pretend that he hadn't cursed his family, that his father hadn't died in this shit-hole, that his son wasn't currently rotting in solitary; that maybe, someone in the world still thought of him.

But it wasn't a fantasy that he let himself dwell in often, after all the visitation room was only an extension of the prison.

This is maybe based off of a deleted scene or at the very least an obscure one... where Omar White mentions that Suzanne wishes that he was her son rather then Ryan... which I thought was funny! If this isn't what you were looking for, I apologize, and I can try something else or you can send in a different prompt.

Father Mukada seems startled by her question and she already knows the answer: it's nuanced and each individual is different - trust in God. But Suzanne still feels guilty that that it's easier to accept a stranger rather than her own son; easier to accept Omar White as a flawed individual than it is to accept that Ryan O'Reily is her own flesh and blood.

Omar for all his bizarre energy is at least trying to be a better person and seems genuinely interested in her and her lessons. Ryan on the other hand continues to lie and try to manipulate her; it might have been easier if he didn't lie the same way as Tessie did: unblinking and straight to her face.

Suzanne sighs, she's pretty sure it's a sin but, this whole situation would be so much easier if Omar White had been her son instead.

Chucky had the hands of a boxer, broad and calloused just like Alonzo had imagined, though it was another thing entirely—a different thing—an intoxicating thing—to actually feel it, heavy mitts cupping the nape of his neck and thick fingers digging into his flesh. They were dangerous hands—hands of a prizefighter—and yet, as Alonzo sacrificed his kneecaps to concrete in front of Pancamo, he knew by the swell of flesh under his mouth and by the blurry look in Chucky’s eyes, that he’d gotten him good. Heavyweight champion though he might have been in whatever funny little corner of the city he hailed from, he was no match for the King of the night; he slumped against the wall like all the challengers before him while Alonzo rose to his feet, towering over him and wiping the corner of his mouth.

“Jesus, what was that, huh?” Chucky slurred.

Alonzo watched as he raised one of those powerful hands to his forehead to wipe sweat from his forehead.

Opinion Here’s how to get free Paxlovid as many times as you need it

When the public health emergency around covid-19 ended, vaccines and treatments became commercial products, meaning companies could charge for them as they do other pharmaceuticals. Paxlovid, the highly effective antiviral pill that can prevent covid from becoming severe, now has a list price of nearly $1,400 for a five-day treatment course.

Thanks to an innovative agreement between the Biden administration and the drug’s manufacturer, Pfizer, Americans can still access the medication free or at very low cost through a program called Paxcess. The problem is that too few people — including pharmacists — are aware of it.

I learned of Paxcess only after readers wrote that pharmacies were charging them hundreds of dollars — or even the full list price — to fill their Paxlovid prescription. This shouldn’t be happening. A representative from Pfizer, which runs the program, explained to me that patients on Medicare and Medicaid or who are uninsured should get free Paxlovid. They need to sign up by going to paxlovid.iassist.com or by calling 877-219-7225. “We wanted to make enrollment as easy and as quick as possible,” the representative said.

Indeed, the process is straightforward. I clicked through the web form myself, and there are only three sets of information required. Patients first enter their name, date of birth and address. They then input their prescriber’s name and address and select their insurance type.

All this should take less than five minutes and can be done at home or at the pharmacy. A physician or pharmacist can fill it out on behalf of the patient, too. Importantly, this form does not ask for medical history, proof of a positive coronavirus test, income verification, citizenship status or other potentially sensitive and time-consuming information.

But there is one key requirement people need to be aware of: Patients must have a prescription for Paxlovid to start the enrollment process. It is not possible to pre-enroll. (Though, in a sense, people on Medicare or Medicaid are already pre-enrolled.)

Once the questionnaire is complete, the website generates a voucher within seconds. People can print it or email it themselves, and then they can exchange it for a free course of Paxlovid at most pharmacies.

Pfizer’s representative tells me that more than 57,000 pharmacies are contracted to participate in this program, including major chain drugstores such as CVS and Walgreens and large retail chains such as Walmart, Kroger and Costco. For those unable to go in person, a mail-order option is available, too.

The program works a little differently for patients with commercial insurance. Some insurance plans already cover Paxlovid without a co-pay. Anyone who is told there will be a charge should sign up for Paxcess, which would further bring down their co-pay and might even cover the entire cost.

Several readers have attested that Paxcess’s process was fast and seamless. I was also glad to learn that there is basically no limit to the number of times someone could use it. A person who contracts the coronavirus three times in a year could access Paxlovid free or at low cost each time.

Unfortunately, readers informed me of one major glitch: Though the Paxcess voucher is honored when presented, some pharmacies are not offering the program proactively. As a result, many patients are still being charged high co-pays even if they could have gotten the medication at no cost.

This is incredibly frustrating. However, after interviewing multiple people involved in the process, including representatives of major pharmacy chains and Biden administration officials, I believe everyone is sincere in trying to make things right. As we saw in the early days of the coronavirus vaccine rollout, it’s hard to get a new program off the ground. Policies that look good on paper run into multiple barriers during implementation.

Those involved are actively identifying and addressing these problems. For instance, a Walgreens representative explained to me that in addition to educating pharmacists and pharmacy techs about the program, the company learned it also had to make system changes to account for a different workflow. Normally, when pharmacists process a prescription, they inform patients of the co-pay and dispense the medication. But with Paxlovid, the system needs to stop them if there is a co-pay, so they can prompt patients to sign up for Paxcess.

Here is where patients and consumers must take a proactive role. That might not feel fair; after all, if someone is ill, people expect that the system will work to help them. But that’s not our reality. While pharmacies work to fix their system glitches, patients need to be their own best advocates. That means signing up for Paxcess as soon as they receive a Paxlovid prescription and helping spread the word so that others can get the antiviral at little or no cost, too.

WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation challenge (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are 31 official themes this year - one for each day of the month - which can be used, skipped, or combined in any way you’d like. They are meant to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you don’t have to include the exact wording of prompts into your work). Feel free to run rampant on interpretation. For example, if the prompt is “flame", you could create something with reference to a candle/campfire, your character could have suffered a burn, or the flame could be a reference to an ‘old flame’ - an old relationship. It’s truly down to you!

In total, there are 4 prompts for each day. These are optional suggestions and can be used in conjunction with the theme, or as options/alternatives.  We want to give everyone as much creative freedom as possible, as well as increase event accessibility for folks with triggers and squicks. There is also a list of 15 alternative prompts that can be subbed in for any day, again to give participants as much creative freedom as possible.

Creators can PRODUCE work in any media they choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, photo/video/audio edits, paper crafts and elaborate recommendation lists (not just a list of links). Creators can PARTICIPATE as much or as little as they want (i.e. you don’t have to do ALL the prompts if you don’t want to) and prompts can be used in any order. Q: Do I have to finish my work(s) to be a completionist? No, you can post WIPs. And you’re not obligated to finish them in October, but if you want it to count towards being a completionist, you must have completed 31 prompts by the end of the month. So for example, if you’re writing a long fic and you fit 31 different prompts into the writing you did in October, it’s okay if that fic isn’t finished by the time October ends, you’ll still be a completionist. Q: Is co-writing/illustrating allowed? Yes, absolutely, and it would count towards being a completionist for both/all of you. Q: Is there a min/max limit on word count for written works? No. Q: Is there a min/max limit of quality for art? No. Q: Do I have to do something each day to be a completionist? No. You can skip days whenever you want, and as long as 31 daily prompts (or alts) are in your works done in October, you can be a completionist. For example, if you wrote a 1000-word ficlet that covers prompts in days 2, 3, and 17, you can check all three days off your list even though it’s only one work. Q: Is this challenge just for fics? No! Artworks, GIFsets, headcannons, rec lists, poetry, moodboards, or any other creative work is encouraged. Q: Can I combine Whumptober with other creation challenges? Absolutely, as long as the other challenges allow it too.

PROMPTS

Q: How do the prompts work? There are FOUR prompts per day: a theme and three ideas. You can use one, two, three, or all four prompts for each day. If you don’t like any of the daily prompts, you can substitute one of the ALT prompts instead. Q: How strictly/literally should we interpret the prompts? As literally or as figuratively as you want. For example, if the theme is WATER, that could mean drowning, waterboarding, raining, swimming, take place underwater, be lost at sea, construct a metaphor about a character’s mood that changes like a flowing river, crying, or whatever else you can think of that fits that theme. Q: Can I combine prompts? Is there a limit on how many? No limit and combine as many as you’d like. If you create a work that checks off multiple prompts, that work will count for a fill of multiple prompts. You need to address 31 different prompts to be an official completionist, but you don’t have to produce 31 separate works.

WORKS

Q: What’s whump? Hurting a character, whether that’s physically, emotionally, intellectually, psychologically, or any other way you can think of. Comfort afterwards is optional. Angst is emotional whump, so it counts. Q: How do I know if it’s whumpy enough? If your character is just mildly inconvenienced, it probably needs more whump. However, no participant has to prove whumpiness to the mods. Whatever you write is up to you. Q: What kind of characters can I create for? Anything. Generic “whumpee,” OC, PC, NPC, major characters, minor characters, or whatever you want. There are no limits. Q: Does it have to take place in a specific fandom? No, you can create works for your own worlds or for fandoms or for both. You can also create more generic or pan-fandom works. You can do cross-overs or use OCs, whatever you want. Q: Can I create AI-created works? We will not reblog or promote any works we know to be generative AI-created. Q: Is there anything we’re not allowed to write? As long as it contains whump and is based on our prompts, it’s fine. Please courtesy tag your works if you post them so people who follow the #whumptober2024 tag can filter according to their preferences. Q: What about sex, minor characters, and potentially disturbing content? You can create whatever works are legal in your country and post them accordingly. Please courtesy tag anything you think might be objectionable if you post to Tumblr so people who follow the #whumptober2024 tag can filter according to their preferences.

POSTING

Q: Where can I post my work? Post where and how you want. You don’t even have to (cross)post it to Tumblr. Just keep in mind if it’s not on Tumblr we will not be able to add it to the blog archive. There is an AO3 archive for Whumptober 2024, as well as the parent collection for works completed outside of the event. Q: Can I start posting early? You can, but this is an October event and wouldn’t it be more fun with everyone doing it at the same time? We won’t be reblogging any work predating October 1st. Q: Can I post late? Yes. For the sake of our hardworking Post Fairies, only a day’s themes will be reblogged to @whumptober-archive each day of October. But you can post whenever. Some of us are still working on and posting Whumptober fics from years ago. Q: Do I have to use your tags? Only on Tumblr and only if you want us to reblog your work on @whumptober-archive. Q: How do I have my works reblogged to the archive? Properly tagged posts will be reblogged to @whumptober-archive. If you want the official archive blog to reblog you, post on Tumblr and tag correctly (see this FAQ link for more info on tagging). Please note not all posts will be reblogged each day. Q: Can we @ you? For questions and comments, of course. We’ll be getting a flood of notifications, so if you really want us to see something send an ask. Q: Can I cross post on other blogs? Yes, multiple platforms and blogs are perfectly acceptable, as long as they allow cross-posting (to us). You can also post different works to different accounts under different names, without posting them everywhere at once. If you post some works under your main and others under an alt blog, that’s fine for completionist purposes. Q: Can I upload/repost my Whumptober content to other social media platforms? Of course! We’ve created an AO3 Collection to archive any fics posted there, which can be found here. The blog is the official archive, so please respect the personal boundaries of any whumpers in your social circle (don’t out anyone as a participant who would prefer not to be outed).
