Here we go, some better pictures and trying again! A male mallard duck is enjoying a calm summer noon in the reeds along the bank of a forest lake. A small group of perch swim through it looking out for their next meal, and potential predators. Not far off at the outskirts of the reeds, a larger perch observes them, making it's mind up if one of them will be it's next meal. Little do any of the perch know that they are being watched by a subadult pike further out. The lightning fast hunter is a force to be reckoned with as it doesn't need to lurk much closer before it can grab any of them! . I really did enjoy making this, despite my frustration on the leaking water effect (Fuller seems to be more runny than others that I've seen in tutorial videos). I learned a LOT and I feel confident that my next diorama featuring water will be a lot better! I told Miyazaki I love the “gratuitous motion” in his films; instead of every movement being dictated by the story, sometimes people will just sit for a moment, or they will sigh, or look in a running stream, or do something extra, not to advance the story but only to give the sense of time and place and who they are.

“We have a word for that in Japanese,” he said. “It’s called ma. Emptiness. It’s there intentionally.”

Is that like the “pillow words” that separate phrases in Japanese poetry?

“I don’t think it’s like the pillow word.” He clapped his hands three or four times. “The time in between my clapping is ma. If you just have non-stop action with no breathing space at all, it’s just busyness, But if you take a moment, then the tension building in the film can grow into a wider dimension. If you just have constant tension at 80 degrees all the time you just get numb.”

Which helps explain why Miyazaki’s films are more absorbing and involving than the frantic cheerful action in a lot of American animation. I asked him to explain that a little more.

“The people who make the movies are scared of silence, so they want to paper and plaster it over,” he said. “They’re worried that the audience will get bored. They might go up and get some popcorn.

But just because it’s 80 percent intense all the time doesn’t mean the kids are going to bless you with their concentration. What really matters is the underlying emotions–that you never let go of those.

I’m hosting an 8-week Online Drawing Workshop - Intensive Basic Course, where I’ll share basic drawing skill set that I’ve earned from past 10 years of experience in the animation industry, working on shows like Voltron Legendary Defender, Avatar : The Legend of Korra, TMNT, Ben 10 Series and many more.

From basic human anatomy, figure, acting, gesture, expression, design, developing own style to many more depth studies of the character drawing will be discussed. Students will put under critical thinking on drawing and design and will develop a basic drawing skill set throughout this workshop.

This workshop is for those of you who are pursuing an animation career in the animation and game industry as a storyboard artist, character designer, visual development artist, character animator, comic artist and more. Those who want to strengthen basic drawing techniques. Those who are art students. Those who want to work in action-adventure shows, feature films, and game. Especially those who live far away from the Hollywood animation and game industry, and have struggled to find an opportunity to learn.

Each week, students will have an access to watch my video lecture for studying and have an exercise based on the topic shared during the workshop, sharpen basic drawing techniques. There’ll be total 8 sessions (3 hours per session) and 8 exercises. Review and critiques in video format will follow.
