It's just something that happens! Fontanians don't have "goals" or "milestones" in the sense that they put on weight purposefully. They don't encourage others to grow fatter, since it's pretty much guaranteed to happen either way.

Some of them simply realize that they're getting fatter fast enough to warrant that they'll become immobilized soon, so they just make preparations for when they reach that next step. It is all very normalized in their society!
