New York is the city that never sleeps, at least that’s what they all say. Every single person that ever walked through its streets fell in love with them and the images stuck in their head like it was the most amazing time they ever had in their lives. That first step you take, breathing in the new air, you just feel like right there everything… works. Even though it had bad traffic, didn’t smell so nice and it was visually polluted. New York was magical somehow and it made everyone feel home even when they are so far away from their own. That’s how Tom felt like on the first time he stepped foot in New York. Renewed and ready to take what the city would throw at him.

When he first heard that he would be moving to a different country, he was fucking terrified. He was so used to London and his friends, changing it out of the nowhere would be really hard for him. He just started making some solid friendships and it was his senior year, he wasn’t ready to let go of the city. What if he got lonely? Or maybe they didn’t like him? He might be cool for a British kid, but maybe he wasn’t so cool as a New Yorker and people would laugh at him. Things for him were falling perfectly into place, he got a scholarship in one of the best schools in the city, his parents got an awesome apartment on the Upper East Side, but he still was afraid of change.

“You don’t have to go alone, you know that darling?” Nikki said to Tom when he admitted to his mother he was feeling afraid of moving. “The school you just got in has an exchange program and I’m sure the Osterfields would love to come along for a year until you and Harrison graduate. And even if he doesn’t come along, it will be such a great opportunity to you as an actor. Maybe if Harrison came along, it would be good for him too.”

And that’s the story of how Tom’s best friend came with him to America. But how he got there in the first place? Well, it’s very simple. Tom’s dad, Dominic, was a comedian and got offered to work in New York and had to move as quick as he could and he would be there for a long time. After a long conversation, the whole Holland family decided to move with him and they all had to manage their whole year again, including finding a place to support the whole family, a new job for Nikki and new schools for the kids. Luckily, the Hollands were a wealthy family, not extremely wealthy, but money never was a problem. Having their firstborn with a scholarship in one of the best schools in New York was huge for them.

The day they left England was the worst anxiety attack Tom had in his life, but all of the boy’s worries went away the first time he stood in the middle of the city, right in front of his building and took a good look, standing right next to his best mate, who rested an arm over his shoulders with a smile on his face, admiring the city just like the one standing next to him.

Being in school was almost torture if you didn’t like Noel Kaim because everyone around seemed to be talking about one thing and one thing only, Noel’s party. They were excited about it because every year it got plenty of good gossips to feed everyone for a full month. Couples were made along with fights, drunk friendships and one night stands that everyone ended up knowing about, no matter how secretive they wanted to be about it.

(Y/N) saw those parties in a very different way. Guys were always trying to talk to her so maybe they could hit that and they were never the ones she wanted to be with, disrespectful most of the times. People were trying to befriend her so they could take advantage of it, with she only wanting to drink something and spend the whole night on the dancefloor, maybe flirting with a few guys when she felt like it. And to be honest, she was kind of sick of it, wanting nothing more to skip this year’s party.

Noel wasn’t thrilled with her decision and followed her around the whole week so he could convince her of tagging along, but she was still mad about him not talking to her during vacations and about him being aggressive with her the other day. And he was everywhere she went, on her apartment, the café before classes, her mother’s office when she was over for a photoshoot, even on Saks when she went out with Courtney and Stacy for shopping. It was pissing her off.

Also, he wasn’t happy about (Y/N)’s proximity to the new London boys, the ones that everyone in school were talking about along with his party. People were wondering how it would be like to party with them, who would they hook up with or if they were even going to show up. Noel was even afraid of them dethroning him as the most popular guy in school, not that they wanted such thing. Tom hated being the centre of attention, Harrison kind of liked the attention, but there’s no way he would do anything crazy to earn it. And seeing the boys with his precious little (Y/N) infuriated him.

(Y/N), on the other hand, was loving to hang out with the boys. The night out with Tom at Vertigo was surprisingly good, and she didn’t have to worry about whether it was a date or not, because it while she was facing him, it didn’t matter anymore. And after that night, they got to hang out even more. He’d meet her at the café before class to have some pastries and a tea, she’d hang out with him and Harrison in front of the St. Jude’s entrance, he’d drive her home after class. They got so close in so little time that it was weird for both of them, but they weren’t complaining, they kind of liked it.

Harrison and (Y/N) became friends too. Of course, nothing could beat his long time friendship with Tom and her instant connection with the boy, but they liked each other’s presence. They grew into a small friendship with Tom as a bridge to connect them, and they were hanging a lot together, but (Y/N) wasn’t as opened with Harrison as she was with Tom. Maybe they didn’t have the same kind of instant connection as she had with Tom, even though she adored Haz.

“You ready to go?” Tom asked as he invaded (Y/N)’s bedroom as she finished packing her overnight bag.

“Not yet.” She winked back at him, and he groaned.

“Why is it taking so long? You already have shampoo, hair conditioner, toothbrush and tampons at my apartment. And you know you can borrow some of my clothes.”

“First, you know I don’t wear sweats.” She did an ugly face and Tom rolled his eyes. “Second, we’re having a slumber party, and I wanted something cute to wear.”

“Baby, it’s literally just us two, Harrison, the twins and Sam’s girlfriend.” He chuckled as he looked through the many options she chose for pajamas. “We’re all going to be in old dirty jammies, and there’s no one to impress there.”

“There’s always you.” She poked his nose, making him giggle.

“Just choose a winter one. It’s going to be cold.” 

“Okay, I’ll go with this one!” She held a silky grey pajama set in front of her and Tom nodded with a smile.

“Come on, or we’re gonna miss Sam’s cupcakes and cookies.” Tom pouted and she finished her bag. 

“No fucking way.”

“Thank you for the dinner, Josephine and Vincent.” One of Harvard’s directors said. He was friends with (Y/N)’s dad and was very close to him. “I’ll love to see you at our University next semester, (Y/N).”

“Thank you so much, sir.” (Y/N) shook his hand with a big smile on her face. “I will love to be there.”

Everyone said their goodbyes, and when the elevator finally closed and went down with their guests, (Y/N) started to jump excitedly to celebrate the huge success that dinner was. Everyone was polite - including Josephine and Vincent who didn’t have a single fight all night - and had a good time together over nice food. (Y/N) caused a good impression and they sure loved her, so everything was fantastic.

“Congratulations, sweetie.” Vincent hugged her daughter and kissed her forehead. “Harvard can’t wait for you. I’m so proud!”

“I’m proud too!” Josephine said with a big smile on her face as she lit up her first cigarette of the night. She didn’t want to cause a bad impression with their guests. “But there’s still time to go to Paris and major in fashion…”

“No, she’s gonna be an awesome lawyer.” Vincent nudged her, who giggled.

“Oh my God, stop fighting over my life.” She said mid-laugh. “I’ll become a lawyer for the fashion world.”

“My girl.” Josie winked as she kissed her cheek. “I think it’s time to go to bed, right?”

“Right. Thank you for hosting everything in here.” Vincent thanked his ex-wife with a small smile.

Even after all this time, all the fights and after both being in stable relationships, Josephine and Vincent still liked each other very much. Both cared a lot about what they had and what they constructed together, but it didn’t work out in the end. After a while, they found someone they loved, but that doesn’t mean they still don’t love each other.

“Good night to you both.” (Y/N) gave them a tight hug before running to her bedroom.

She removed everything, from clothes to makeup, before lying back in bed, listening to the soft sound coming from the TV while she texted Tom. He was probably still out partying with Harrison, so calling him was not an option; even though she was dying to do so.

“Brunch tomorrow? Same place, same hour. I have some good news! XO” She typed on her phone, and it was read immediately. Soon he was replying.

Tom: “Of course. You better tell me everything tomorrow. Have a good night, I love you.”

“I love you too. See ya’ tomorrow, good night lovey.”
