“Stop, baby, I’m about to get a highscore-“ Jihoon muttered, eyes entirely focused on the game displayed on his phone. He was tapping with his fingers, controlling the small fighter to shoot at his opponents. You didn’t mind your boyfriend playing video games, you knew it was a stress reliever for him, but you wanted his attention so badly at the moment and weren’t particularly happy about a video gaming winning over you for his affection.

If you had counted correctly, it had been 8 days since you had last kissed Jihoon properly. He had been busy and tired while filming his new drama, so quick pecks before he left in the morning were all you had been getting for the last couple days. It was finally his day off today, and while you were overjoyed to be able to cuddle in his lap after so long— the lack of proper attention was starting to frustrate you.

Was the video game really better than his girlfriend?

You had been thinking of the perfect counter tactic to get back Jihoon’s attention as you sat, curled up in his lap. There was one thing that should be foolproof: kisses. If you reminded Jihoon of what he had been missing out on for the past several days, eventually he would realize that he’d much rather spend his time kissing his lovely girlfriend than playing some dumb shooting game.

You had started 2 minutes ago, conservatively kissing the back of his hand just to test out the waters. You didn’t get much of a reaction from that, just a subtle smile that might as well have been from the game. You started to get a little more daring as your patience ran thin, pressing multiple kisses to his cheek which seemed to distract him enough to protest. 

“Stop, baby, I’m about to get a highscore-“ 

You contemplated just waiting for him to stop playing on his own, or at least finish the round since he was so close to beating his personal record. But that thought vanished after about 2 seconds, and you proceeded to kiss his cheek again and scold your brain for the silly thought. 

Patience wasn’t the answer for this situation. Or, at least it wasn’t the answer that you liked. It wasn’t like you were harming him— in fact, it was known that Jihoon was more addicted to kisses than you in the relationship. Besides, you had already been patient for over a week. And now Jihoon’s pretty lips were right in front of you. There was no reason why you should hold back.

He dug his head further into the hood of his hoodie to try to make it harder for you to access face. Though he was subtle with it, you still caught onto his every move. The fact that he was now actively trying to evade you excited you, because it meant he was close to breaking. 

Though his face was now unobtainable to you, with a little craning of your head, you managed to access his neck to give him yet another kiss. This is what finally got him to break. You watched in satisfaction as he switched off his phone, still 2 minutes away from finishing his round.

“You’re teasing me on purpose, aren’t you?” He muttered, giving you a knowing look, though his lips were lifting into a small smile.

“How else was I supposed to get your attention off the game?” You asked with a giggle.

“I lost the game because of you.” He whispered, pulling you closer to his chest by your hips and giving you his first kiss, one on the cheek.

“Are you mad about it?” 

“Mmh, I’m very upset, baby.” He said, a hint of sarcasm in his tone.

“You don’t seem very upset, though?” You caught onto his lie with a smile, and kissed his nose softly. He scrunched it up in response and pressed his lips together stubbornly. 

He didn’t say anything else, silently admitting that he wasn’t really mad at all. His hand slid up to your cheek and he gently pulled your face closer to his, meeting his soft lips with yours after what had felt like an eternity. He let the kiss last long enough to satisfy both of you, and by the time he pulled away, you were both slightly out of breath.

You frowned despite the butterflies that he had summoned in your stomach, “Did you film kiss scenes for the drama?”

His eyes widened slightly, “No! No. There’s no kissing in this drama.” He quickly defended.

You raised an eyebrow in skepticism, “It’s a fantasy romance drama, Jihoon.”

His lips formed an ‘o’ shape as his brain quickly thought of his next lie, “It was a stunt double that filmed those scenes.” 

You laughed at his awful attempt at pretending like he was innocent. Teasing your boyfriend never failed to entertain you. You were perfectly confident in your boyfriend’s loyalty to you, and were quite sure that every on screen kiss was only acting and nothing else, but you still loved to bring it up every once and a while.

“Does she kiss as well as I do?” You asked finally, biting back a amused smile.

“Not even close.” He responded, and you could feel the sincerity from his shiny eyes.

“Just making sure.” You smiled, leaning down to reconnect your lips again. Jihoon was like a dream to kiss. His lips were soft and gentle, and each time he pressed them to yours you felt your heart swell. Each kiss was like a soft reminder of how much you loved him.

five years. five whole years. that's exactly how long you've been out of seungcheol's life — physically, because to him you'll never not be a part of it. not when he's exactly where you'd left him all those years ago.

he'd refused to move out of the house he shared with you, refused to get rid of the bed you used to sleep in with him right next to you and refused to throw out your blanket that you'd forgotten to take with you the night you stormed out after packing up your stuff in a haste.

despite all the advice from his friends, he'd always thought you'd come back eventually and mend the hole you'd left in his heart. all these years, he'd held on to that belief so tightly like it was the only thing that was keeping him going. but that won't be possible anymore. not when you'd clearly moved on without him.

against his own better judgment, he still kept up with your life updates regularly whether it was through social media or your mutual friends. usually the former because his friends know better than to talk about you in front of him.

claiming he just wanted to know how you were doing was clearly just an excuse for him to keep up with what seems to be his addiction to you. he knew better than anyone that this wasn't good for him because it kills him to know that you were better off without him. it kills him to know that he couldn't give you what you wanted and there's someone else out there that could and you've now found that someone. everything he's seen of you since you've left him only pushed him down further into his despair.

he'd lost his chance. he'd lost you.

time heals all wounds. he scoffs at the thought not only because he'd lost count of how many times he's had to hear this saying in the past five years but also at how ridiculous it is to him. how can time heal his wounds when it had stopped for him the moment you walked out of his life and kept moving forward for you?

“so this is it?” he asks, his elbows on his knees and his hands clasped in front of him. his eyes shine with tears that he is trying not to let fall.

you shrug. “i cant keep doing this, baekhyun,” you sniff, wiping under your eyes with the sleeve of your shirt. his eyes stay locked on the floor, as if a solution to fixing your relationship will spew from the carpet.

baekhyun can’t even remember how you two ended up here. one minute, he was walking in the door and the next you were telling him that you wanted to break up. his brain turned off after the word left your lips, and all he could hear was the echo of your voice in his head saying “i’m done”. “done” as in with him, with your relationship, with waiting on him, with waiting for him. simply just done, over it.

he tried to salvage it, begged you to see it through. tried to reason with you that he’d be better, he’d make more time for you, that he loved you. but he’d fallen short on so many of the promises of the past, that his words went in one ear and out the other for you.

you never wanted it to get to this point, but it started to feel inevitable. he was gone a lot—you knew that’d be the case when you agreed to be his girlfriend. you practically signed up for it. and it was fine, you could deal with it as long as he came back to you, and made time for you. he held up his end of the deal, coming right home to you once he was finished with his schedules, reserving time—days—just for you, turning off his phone and ignoring calls from his friends.

he did it all, until he stopped. he got comfortable—all it took was you saying it was fine that he saw some friends once, to let him forget about you completely. those days turned into mere hours turned into quick hellos and goodbyes. you lived alone half of the year, and it started to feel like he was just there to sleep on the days he was back from his schedules. there were barely any signs that he lived with you beyond his clothes in the closest. anyone could come over and assume that you lived alone, and they wouldn’t be entirely wrong.

you gave him the benefit of the doubt every time. you convinced yourself that he’d see you when he got the chance. but he never made time, so the opportunity never arose. it got to a point where you were lucky to even hold a conversation with him for longer than a few minutes.

bakehyun was a stranger in your house. it felt odd to even see him sit in the chair across from you. it’s probably the first time it’s ever been occupied by him.

“y/n, please,” he begs. he doesnt even know what he’s begging for—another chance, reconsideration? understanding?

you shake your head. “no, baekhyun. i cant be with you anymore,” a single tear falls out of his eye and drags down the length of his cheek, curving down his jaw before dropping onto the wood floor.

this day wasn’t supposed to happen. these words were never supposed to leave your mouth. and nothing could have ever prepared baekhyun for it, not even if it was telegrammed to him, or if the signs were always there.

baekhyun sniffs and finally lifts his head to look at you, and feels like crumpling all over again, because you’re no longer his. the woman across from him is now a stranger, somebody he once had and took for granted.

he wants so badly to touch you one last time, to hold and to kiss you to commit to memory. he needs something to hold onto, to remind himself it wasn’t always like this, but maybe it has been and he’s been too blind to see it. “i can be better,” he sniffs, pushing his hair back from his forehead.

you shake your head. you once had better, had the best from him. it’s hard to believe that he could ever be that same man again. “baekhyun, it’s over,” and it kills you to keep saying it, because every time the words leave your lips it becomes more real. your life with baekhyun is unfolding in the worst possible way.

it’s helpless now. any words he says will be like grasping at straws, and he’s run out. he’s run out of chances to make things better. and he’ll curse himself forever for losing the one thing in his life that meant the most, all because he couldn’t read the signs that were right in front of him.
